I think he's making something like 4.4 this year, with a cap of 3.8.
I don't know, I don't think a 3 year deal is a bad deal, provided we have more of a budget to work with for the upcoming few years. It'll be cheaper to resign Ruutu than go out in FA and find someone to replace him.
This is all predicated on us not committing to a total rebuild, however. I don't know that more picks and prospects for Ruutu would really help us as much as having him in the top 6 would.
plus, we could always ship out Pitkanen at the draft to essentially free up the cash for ruutu, and get some further help in the process.] 2/10/2012 12:06:41 PM |

Bowman down, Samson up.
I'm really beginning to worry that none of our forward prospects are going to pan out to be NHL scoring line players. Boychuk, Dalpe, Bowman, Samson, Nash... None of them have really done anything to show that they will ever be more than a third liner in the NHL (if anything at all), and for some of them they are running out of opportunities. 2/12/2012 12:34:00 PM |
puck_it All American 15446 Posts user info edit post |
Been saying this for a year. Boychuk is done. Nash will be a grinder type (don't think he was ever brought in for finesse anyway). Dalpe and bowman show some promise, but I doubt they'll ever be more than a tlusty type player.
It scares me that they lack any sort of swagger, they look wide eyed and lost more often than not.
I like our defensive prospects, for once. But outside of skinner and sutter, I don't see any players growing and maturing as hockey players.
And because of this, I'd much rather we trade ruutu and attempt to sign him in June. I'd rather go get some picks, and hope we pick more kids and trade away what hasn't been working. 2/12/2012 2:51:12 PM |

Come on guys, they are still in their early 20s
....
Seriously though, most of them have been putting up production at the AHL level that you would expect, and it's not like we were giving them tons of minutes before Muller got here. I think it's way too early to think about cutting bait on these kids. #1 thing working against a lot of them is their size. We haven't exactly been the most stable team for the past few years.
We'll probably give Boychuk at least a 1 year deal to stick with the organization and try to figure it out, not like any team is going to sign him to an offer sheet. Bowman too. Not everyone makes a significant impact during their ELC.
Sure, we're probably going to only have a couple of the kids pan out, but giving up on the whole lot of them is ridiculous. We'll see a lot more of the kids playing together in Raleigh after the trade deadline, I'd bet.
I still think Boychuk will end up playing for the Canes, and that what is going on with him now is a severe mindfuck from management to try and get through to him that he has to get his shit together on a consistent basis. There is simply no other reason why we have called up all our other prospects and left Boychuk in Charlotte. ] 2/12/2012 5:09:26 PM |

I thought Samson looked quite good before he got hurt, wasn't that the reason he got sent back down anyways? So we could play someone else while he recovered?
Then again, my technical knowledge of hockey and who looks "good" and "bad" is at a 1st grade level at best. 2/13/2012 9:19:30 AM |

did anyone see ruutu get hurt? apparently an upper body injury, but i can't figure out what happened. it'd be just our luck that he gets hurt before we trade him, and ruins his value. either that or he is getting traded and its a precaution. 2/13/2012 9:25:10 PM |

Looked like Ruutu may have cracked a rib or something. Probably the worst thing that could possibly happen to this team right now if he gets seriously hurt.
Aside from that, though, maybe the most feel good win of the year. 2/13/2012 10:53:47 PM |

We could still trade him, but i'm guessing his value goes down because of this. It's just our luck for this to happen.
I thought it was weird that they send Samson back down so quick, he was playing well last night. Bowman is good though, I hope they give the youngsters more of a chance to prove themselves. I'd like to see Dalpe replacing Ruutu on the first line while he's out. 2/14/2012 5:42:09 PM |
