SB 155 filed yesterday would finally allow a change to the Sunday alcohol sales law - restaurants could begin serving at 10am if voters approve, although you still couldn't buy from retail outlets until noon. A few other changes in there as well related to liquor. I'd prefer the bill just make sales on Sunday the same time as every day of the week, but at least it's progress on the Sunday alcohol front.

Is this the first good thing they're proposed in 27 pages of this thread?
Nm this is clearly a bi-partisan bill

Yea, didn't mean to imply it was a GOP only bill. I'm assuming the House bill will also be bi-partisan, but we'll see when it's filed. 3/2/2017 11:20:54 AM |

This one is bi-partisan too but the R's control the legislature so it's getting filed in this thread. HB 279 seeks to regulate the scourge of fantasy sports...
http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session=2017&BillID=H279
Very ambiguous language in this bill that I could easily see being applied by some busybody at the secretary of state's office to your office fantasy league - despite the "good intentions" of the bill drafters for it to only apply to those big fantasy leagues that advertise incessantly. But this still accepts the premise that fantasy sports should be regulated by the state... a premise I reject. 3/9/2017 1:54:20 PM |

the good thing at least is that it explicitly legalizes commercial fantasy leagues, but its pretty dumb the way its written with no exclusions. the obvious exclusion should be if there is no net revenue 3/9/2017 2:02:00 PM |

HCH, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.
Cooper doing the best he can to make sure that permanent damage isn't done to the state. It's a shitty compromise that he's having to make in order for the NCGA to stop doubling down on making the state a laughingstock and keep it from losing more business. It's a step in the right direction though, even if the GA still wants to keep legislating city gov't (which I thought was against GOP cornerstone principals, but whatever).
So...if you want this in the Cooper thread it'd be + credibility anyway for trying to make the most of this shit situation the GOP put us in.

it pains me how so many people don't realize how little power Cooper actually has when dealing with the NCGA
and those same people don't seem to understand that a lot of these people can be voted out during the next round of elections, and that while this isn't a perfect solution, it's at the very least a foot in the door 3/30/2017 4:25:46 PM |

There is a representative from Pender county who wants to impeach the NC Secretary of State over the process to get certified as a notary public. Apparently there are like 300+ people across the state who do not have full legal citizenship yet are notary publics, and this guy has taken issue with it.
Is he slow or something? Impeaching someone over something so small of an issue will just draw a lot of negative publicity to the issue and cost a lot of money. Why not just tackle each case of "improper" notary public certifications on a case by case basis, then add some oversight if he thinks it is needed.

Yes, I'd say it's 98% the fault of the NC Beer and Wine Wholesalers Assoc. (the distributors) and their lobbyist and 2% the fault of Rev. Creech and his Baptist website. The original bootlegger-baptist coalition. I can't find the stat right now, but the distributors and their lobbying arm gave $1.5 million in campaign contributions over the past 3-4 years. Hopefully the @ncbeer/Craft Freedom folks will actually name the legislators responsible for killing this bill so they can be targeted in next year's election. 4/20/2017 6:16:58 AM |

Quote : | "You should know what just happened to our Court of Appeals, because it's nuts.
Our Court of Appeals has 15 judges. We just passed a law to shrink it to 12. Why? Because three of them are hitting the age of mandatory retirement soon and Gov. Cooper would be allowed to appoint their replacements.
That's it. That's the whole reason.
There was abundant evidence presented to the legislature that the Court of Appeals has a heavy workload and this bill will slow down the disposition of justice in our state, but the bill was quickly passed despite these warnings.
Notably, the last four Chief Justices of our state Supreme Court Justices - a bipartisan group - all strongly opposed the effort.
Here's the most remarkable part: The move was so extreme that it compelled one of our judges on the Court of Appeals who was approaching mandatory retirement - and is a conservative Republican - to resign his seat in protest of the law and thereby allow Gov. Cooper to appoint a replacement.
As he said, “I did not want my legacy to be the elimination of a seat and the impairment of a court that I have served on."
Gov. Cooper vetoed the bill, but the veto was overridden by the GOP supermajorities that currently exist in both chambers. It's now law.
What can we do? Only one thing: pick up three seats in the House or six seats in the Senate, break the supermajority, unlock Gov. Cooper's veto, and restore political balance in our state." |
Just blatant power grabs. SMH. I really don't see myself EVER voting GOP for the rest of my life at this point. As epically shitty as many of the federal GOP reps are, it's really been the NC GOP that has sent me over the edge. This state isn't gonna reach its potential till we stomp these fucks out.4/28/2017 8:48:13 PM |
