No way. I play looser. Then tighter with a medium stack. Then loose/pushing all in with a short stack.

I've won some huge pots (relative to the stakes I play) with suited connectors, probably more than I've won with big pairs, or anything else for that matter.

Did anybody catch Poker After Dark this week? It was a cash game and they normally pay some sort of bounty if you win with 2-7. Unfortunately, they couldnt do it this week because Chris Ferguson hadnt ever played it and he didnt feel comfortable with the strategy involved. This upset the other 5 guys but it really enraged Mike Matusow. Every chance Mike got he really railed Chris about not playing. Anyway, at the end of the week Chris and Mike get heads up. Chris has 27 and Mike has A8. Mike catches two pair on the river and Chris has 7 high and wins the hand with a stone cold bluff. Chris flips them over and says I like playing this 27 game. Mike was not very pleased. 3/21/2010 3:39:58 PM |

wow... just played at probably the juicest NL game I've ever sat in at the Gran Casino in Madrid.
It's 2/4 NL (euros so its really $2.80/$5.60).... 7-9 handed typically. The MINIMUM buyin was 100 euros(25 bb's?!)
The preflop action would go one of the following easily over 50% of hands.
1) 6-7 people limp in preflop.
2) someone open raises to 25-50 euros (34 was common for some reason) and gets 1-2 flat calls. The action on all future streets would usually be 25-50 euro bets.... perplexing
I only had a chance to play for ~4 hours so I could catch my bus back to the city without my g/f killing me so I had to make things happen.
I really didn't connect on my limping hands (suited connectors, low pp's, etc) but the amount of $ i won on low to medium strength hands was simply ridiculous due to the insane odds i was getting to make value bets or calls...
So in ~3 hours i take my buyin of 100E to 600E (~$700) which is enough to cover my flight.
Most of the bad players were leaving so i tested the 5/10E NL game that was 6 handed. I was up about 300E's over there within 30 minutes but ran into trouble when I got AJ in the BB (3 limpers) and pumped it to 50e hoping to take it down and they ALL called.
flop Q44 so of course i lead by betting 60 into 200 and it folds to the button who calls. turn Q so i fire 120 into 320 pot and he calls again.... river blank i check/fold to his all in and he shows a queen.
Still, just letting you know if you want to visit Spain the flight isn't hard to get comped by the players there.

there's some validity to a short stack eliminating fold equity.
if you're in a forced short session time frame, and just looking to get a good gamble in before you have to go, why not shorty, push a marginal lead when you're likely ahead, and get called by a wider range (further increasing your bet value)?
Still a much better bet than any other casino game
esp. in a passive game 3/22/2010 11:25:16 AM |
David0603 All American 12764 Posts user info edit post |
True, but then I'd think playing lots of low pocket pairs etc would be -ev. 3/22/2010 1:52:57 PM |

example of my first winning hand of any significance. play has been around the table a few rounds and i have an ultratight image as i dont believe ive made a single raise pf yet only a few blind limps really...
UTG live straddles to 8 euros. he gets 4 callers before it comes to me in the CO or button i forget with 8-8. At this point there are 46(!?!) euros in the pot and I have seen limped hands shown down like Q3o, A5o, J9o a few times. I make the easy decision to push with 91 Euros so im risking 91 to win 46 with the likelihood everyone will fold to my huge overbet.
It folds around and then I'm called by a lady who plowed thru ~1000E in the 3 hours she sat there who has AQo.
Okay, so I'm what 55-57% to risk 91 to win about 220E after the rake. I will take those odds everytime. Even if the caller has an overpair (worst case) the play is only slightly EV due to all the dead money in the pot. If I get two callers I suspect the play is almost even EV regardless of their holdings.
This is a play I can make when I hold 23 big blinds. This is not a play I can make if I have 100 big blinds as it becomes -EV in most scenarios.
Keep in mind i have ~4 hours to play which is about 100 hands live. I want to push small edges, not fold all night and walk away down a few rounds of blinds. Can you honestly say you get all-in pots with the nuts and a huge stack on 1 of every 100 hands? Doubtful.
I have been crushing since I went to this new shortstack strategy for over a year now, no way I'm ever going back to the old way until the game textures changes dramatically. 3/22/2010 5:34:54 PM |

It really depends on the texture of the game.
One other consideration my max ATM withdraw was ~300 euros so this protects me against going busto immediately and having to sit and jerk off until the bus came to pick me back up that night. 3/22/2010 8:43:53 PM |

Sorry, I'm just kinda proud. Bankroll management is so key...
I've also noticed that my game has shifted to mostly trying to make other players fold. Before I was mostly being too passive and waiting for too many hands to come to me. I've never really played like this before but it definitely seems to be working. 3/23/2010 8:08:17 AM |

What are everyone's thoughts on this hand? Pretty sure my pre-flop call was fine. Mostly looking at my post-flop play. I feel like I played it decently, just got unlucky but I'm not sure. What do you guys think?

Had you seen him/her chase things previously? Maybe bet more on your initial bet if your goal is to drive them out, but it looks like they were intent on chasing the flush either way. 3/23/2010 8:56:33 AM |

why such a big flop bet? 3/23/2010 9:11:39 AM |

I would have bet the turn IF no heart showed up. I def. wouldn't have bet the flop with that many cards that would beat me. (unless you wanted to race as well) 3/23/2010 9:21:19 AM |

Well I put him on AK/AQ so I was pretty sure I was ahead at that point. I was trying to chase him out and didn't really expect a re-raise. At that point I feel like I'm getting too good of odds to fold. But how can you flop top two pair like that and not bet the flop? Check/Call the flop and if there's no heart on the turn shove? 3/23/2010 9:52:57 AM |

I really shouldn't be complaining about this guy because I have been killing the $.10/$.25 rush poker on FTP lately because of donks like this. But I noticed he had a good sized stack so I thought he was pretty solid...then my jaw dropped when I saw what he actually had...such a joke. Nice 6xBB raise UTG with 10/3off, douchebag.
