I can't say I'd be disappointed if he went ahead and stepped down. He's lost the team and we've lost the season.
I'm all NBA right now. I'll monitor college basketball from afar and hope something happens with the NCAA and UNC football. NC State sports have really strengthened my love for professional sports over the years.2/6/2011 11:19:30 AM |

as much as ive been on the FIRE amato/sendek bandwagons, i really dont think a firing will help things after this year. its not like we have coaches lined up in anticipation waiting for this job. Not to mention we have one of the top C's coming in next year. I just dont think a coaching change will do much at this point. We're better off seeing if there is any improvement with the young core of the team between this year and next and then considering firing Lowe if the talent doesnt develop.
I mean brown, harrow and leslie will transfer and we'll lose uchebo and harris for next year. 2/6/2011 1:16:32 PM |

No, I agree that serious NCAA violations are the standard for a midseason firing (or gross misconduct/legal issues). Yow will never fire a basketball coach for poor performance midseason, nor should she. I just find it a bit comical that we have 2 schools nailed for major violations and the coaches are allowed to keep churning along (Bruce Pearl's 1/2 conference suspension and all). 2/6/2011 1:35:21 PM |

I just don't see how anyone can keep a straight face while continuing to support the current coaching staff. Not sure any players are going to make a difference with the leadership we currently have.
Deciding to continue down this same path based on some recruits or the fear that kids might transfer is ridiculous.

Becuase he's done nothing wrong.
You think the "Rawr Rawr State fans are crazy" talk is bad now, lets fire our coach that broke no rules mid-season and see how that works out.
My biggest question to that is: What are the advantages of it? Why further embarass an NC State legend by firing him midseason? You can privately tell him that he won't be retained and can start putting out feelers to various coaching candidates in the meantime.
It's already being done. It's not like we're going to miss on some coach and he's going to say "OMF, I wanted that job but I had no idea Sidney Lowe was going to be fired". Ray Charles can see that NC State is going to be looking for a new coach, and it won't hinder our coaching search at all with Sid finishing out the year.
If anything, it'll give Sid time to convince these players that they should stick with NC State after he's gone.

Maybe after he gets fired after this season he will get a HC job at like UNC-W.
The Matt Doherty experiment failed at UNC and the Sidney Lowe experiment has failed at State.

I really believe that there are hundreds of NCAA coaches that are better than Lowe. We have good talent on this team and we look like shit on the court. I really don't know if anyone will transfer. Lowe's firing may be the final push CJL needs to jump to the NBA. But if Brown transfers he'll have to sit out a year. That, plus the year he spent at Hargrave would really set him back...after all, his ultimate goal is probably playing in the NBA. Harrow may transfer...I don't know. For all I/we know, they all stay. Or they all transfer. But that's a chance I'd be willing to take. No one transferred when Herb left. Brackman went on to play baseball and Ced Simmons went pro...those 2 things would have likely happened regardless. We did lose a few recruits, which may be the case if we fire Lowe. But I think, in the long run, it would be worth it. Lowe has not gotten done, and by the looks of it he will not ever get it done. We might have to take a step back in order to take a couple of steps forward. Barring a miraculous ACC Tourney/NCAA Tourney run, I don't see anyway Lowe is the head coach next season.
Edit: If Lowe's not fired the 2011-2012 season will be very embarrassing. The turnout for games will be pathetic. People will boo, bring signs, etc. It's in the best interest of the program to let Lowe go.

^^maybe so, but the season is lost regardless of whether we fire him now or after the season ends. no coach is going to talk to us until after the season anyways, so it doesn't help our coaching search at all to fire him during the season.

I mean the suspension could always light a fire under CJ's ass and we could come out and win 6 of 7 to finish 8 and 8 if everyone is on the same page. IMO we actually don't look that far off we just have to figure out how to deal with adversity and stop playing like pussies for 5 minutes every half where the game gets out of hand.
I'm all for a new coach if we can't turn it around, but IMO losing everyone in the process and starting from scratch might be worse. Obviously if we don't lose anyone to transfer that is best case scenario but I don't think it will happen. Brown, Harrow, Wood, and really CJW and Painter are the only reasons I'm still watching us play, and if we don't have them next year regardless of the coach its going to be really fucking ugly. You think it can't get worse, it will. (to the dumbshits, I'm not suggesting we shouldn't get rid of Lowe assuming we finish like we have played so far)

I am pretty sure Roy Williams knew he was going to UNC before the end of the season. I think if Lowe announces his resignation (at the end of the season) soon we would also have a jump start on coaches that aren't currently employed.

Well IMO we look like shit in every phase of the game (and we have for 5 years now) and LOL @ the adversity comment - you mean the adversity of not having a competent coach? Don't let the other team getting a 20 point lead and putting it on cruise control fool you into thinking that "we don't look that far off"
I mean if you can't see that Lowe needs to go at this point then you are certifiably delusional or you've just got really low expectations from the basketball program.

I think too many people think what happened last men's basketball coaching change at NC State is normal. Keep in mind last year's change included:
1) Starting center departed early for the NBA.
2) Other experienced big man quit basketball to focus on baseball
3) A long, drawn out, and poorly executed coaching search that included
a) multiple public swings and misses/rejections b) being publicly turned down by a coach that was never even offered the job (Lavin) c) a verbal agreement with a proven if unexciting coach falling apart due to our AD changing the buyout terms last minute, in a way that meant adverse tax implications (Beilein) d) our AD insisting he was in charge of the basketball program and players in the interim, meanwhile having NO contact with any of the 3 committed recruits and their families, leading to...
4) Losing 2/3 of a recruiting class, all with signed Letters of Intent
5) Finally settling on an alum (who thankfully said yes) with no college head coaching experience, without a college degree, meaning we didn't have a head coach until the end of June.

I sound confused because I'm on the fence about this team. Part of me wants a new coach but the other half of me knows we're going to be set back several years if we don't get the right guy who can keep this team and recruits. We kept the team and lost the recruits last time around. If you look at the situation objectively, thats a big part of why we have sucked for the past 4 seasons and are relying on 3 freshman to dig us out of the hole Sidney wasn't able to close in recruiting. Don't take that shit out of context, I'm not defending anyone with that last post.

I try not to be too critical of students and incoming-recruits, but nothing we have committed is worth worrying about losing. Harris is a role player for a decent high-major and Uchebo is a fringe Top 75 player at best. You don't worry about losing those types if a change is necessary.
Regarding losing "the team," these kids aren't likely to leave school and sit out a full year and delay their potential pro careers because of a coaching change. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's very unlikely...
^^ I think an argument can be made that losing Chris Wright was as big a reason as any (you know, besides not having a decent coach) that we have been in this hole. But there is no Chris Wright we have committed right now...

I don't understand this "we'll be set back" talk. Yeah maybe if we were winning 10+ conference games a season we'd get set back with a new coach. But when you're averaging 4-5 wins a season, any damn coach can at least match that with the talent we have. 2/6/2011 11:14:53 PM |

^Exactly. We are 11th in the ACC behind Virginia for God's sake.
If we should lose to Wake, we will be tied with a team that has been argued is among the worst in ACC history.
But Lowe leaving/resigning/getting fired will set us back more.
