I love how every time he mentions an iPhone, pttyndal goes out of his way to type mePhone.
At least when people type M$, it's actually shorter.

As for the M$, a lot of people in Tech Talk take personal offense to using M$...at least thats what happened the first/last time I wrote M$ instead of Microsoft.

For the G1/MT3G owners out there, Cyanogen got the hardware-accelerated video codecs working for us.... SO, we may actually have a 2.1 ROM that runs worth a damn very soon. He noted he has the big things done, his kernel is running "very fast" and he is just working on some small things.
That is awesome news for those of us not so fortunate to already have a bad ass phone, or getting the Incredible/EVO/Nexus One. 4/23/2010 11:26:54 PM |

what sites are people using for andriod discussion? i am trying to find a good comparison of the various android phones, what is the best one on the market? i like the motorola droid but would sacrifice the physical keyboard if it means a lighter phone, its a little too heavy for my taste. i was originally interested in the nexus pne but i have heard bad things about people trying to deal with google. 4/24/2010 2:57:29 PM |

OK, just a question to see if anyone has attempted to pull something like this off. I am seeing that Amazon is selling the Droid for $19.99 with a 2-year contract for new Verizon customers. Amazon offers the discount since it looks like you're entering a 2-way contract with both Amazon and Verizon - Amazon for 181 days, and Verizon for the full 2 years. Since Verizon claims to be allow customers to edit their contracts at any time, I'm curious to know if I could get the phone through Amazon and then go to my local Verizon store and apply my Duke employee discount to the plan I bought through Amazon. (Does that make sense?) The Duke discount is the decision maker for me since it'd waive the activation fee, and it's 15% off on talk and 20% off on data. I'm trying to get the best of both worlds since I'm a cheap bastard, and I don't want to buy the phone from Amazon but not be able to get the Duke discount later. 4/26/2010 1:27:21 PM |

^This sounds like a situation that I would not trust someone saying "Sure I have done something just like this before". In theory it should work fine, if Verizon will apply the discount to an already discounted plan or in this case a third party referral. I would definitely try to ask their online support about applying retroactive discounts and maybe even speak with their business sales to see if they would just simplify everything and match the 19.99 phone cost. If you don't want to tip your hand, then try fatwallet forums, slickdeals or howard.
I purchased a sprint phone from ebay under a third party referral for a severely discounted phone. It was setup as a business account. Eventually the plan was converted back and forth and has had discounts applied, taken away, added back, etc. It really all depends.
http://tinyurl.com/2azfdmg Similar discussion after a bit of googling. Regardless I wouldn't trust anything on the web in a situation like that.

^^I think all you have to do after you buy it is go online to your account and activate your employee discount. Should just have to enter your email address. Don't know about the free activation, though. I think you have to do that at the time of purchase. 4/26/2010 1:42:46 PM |

Just talked with one of my buddies who got a Droid through Best Buy a few months back. They were matching Verizon's mail-in rebate as an instant discount, and so he went to the Verizon store to see if they would match Best Buy as an instant discount. They refused (which didn't surprise him), so he went back to Best Buy and got the phone from them. Then he took his Ingersoll-Rand pay stub back to the Verizon store and asked them to honor the monthly discount for IR employees which they offer, and they set it up. It's not quite the same situation, but I feel like it'll work. My wife did something pretty similar to this with AT&T when she got her iPhone, and they retroactively gave her the Duke discount about 3 months after she finally brought in one of her pay stubs. 4/26/2010 3:31:44 PM |

yeah, I don't think there is anything in the TOS for places like amazon or best buy preventing discounts. You just can't downgrade to a lower plan or remove the device/data plan in the first 181 days without getting hit with a secondary ETf. 4/26/2010 3:56:03 PM |
TJB627 All American 2110 Posts user info edit post |
I think your plan will work but also note that Best Buy doesn't have a separate contract like Amazon does. You might even want to contact Amazon and see if they will give you an answer.

Best Buy does in fact have a secondary ETF.

By accepting this price reduction, you agree to repay this discount if, during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, you: Fail to pay your balance due to Verizon Wireless each month Disconnect this Verizon Wireless line of service Transfer this equipment to another Verizon Wireless line of service Change your Verizon Wireless service rate plan to a lower monthly service rate Deactivate the email/data feature if one was required at the point of purchase Transfer/port an existing mobile number from another Verizon Wireless account if this is a new line of service Replace an existing account with Verizon Wireless with this account if this is a new line Return your equipment for a refund or exchange and it is not in its original, new condition or it is not returned within the 30-day return period outlined in our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. I think there is only a secondary ETF from Best Buy if you purchase online. Online dealers like to force you into specific data and rate plans.
I know AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile do not have secondary ETF's with Best Buy (in store purchases).
Verizon did not as of August 2009, not sure if they added this. I know their regular ETF skyrocketed.
Best Buy price matches so always try to get them to match Amazon/Walmart.
Starting an account at a Best Buy and then adding a discount elsewhere should not be a problem. 4/26/2010 5:14:34 PM |

When I went into Verizon, I talked to the most tech savvy employee, ironically (not really) a skinny white guy with glasses. He, too, was going to get the Incredible or the N1.. whichever came out first. After he printed out a specs sheet, the Incredible pretty much had the N1 beat on everything (except the clocked down processor on the Incredible.. but still 768mhz? is beast for a phone). The N1 not coming out for Verizon really isn't that much of a blow... if anything, it'll only boost Incredible and other Android platform phones. (<-- the Incredible & the Droid, seeing how the Incredible was referred to as the Eris GT) 4/26/2010 9:20:58 PM |
