Maybe in the long run, but right now most of the jobs created by technology are (obviously) tech jobs. App designers and graphic designers who are good with Dreamweaver and stuff like that. Engineers who are working for tech startups. That's a pretty small segment of the economy, though, and for every tech job created I bet there are at least 2 Wal-Mart cashiers who lost their job to the automated scanner, or two stevedores who lost their job to automated cranes. I'm not saying those inventions are bad per se, but it results in a bit of a logjam when all these people go back out onto the market looking for jobs that have disappeared. There probably will be net job creation as our education system moves to adjust to training kids for tech jobs, but we still have a huge amount of unskilled workers right now who aren't prepared for them and that will probably persist for at least another couple decades.

I mean damn, I did engineering and sometimes I still feel like I picked the wrong one. They tell you Chem E pays the most in undergrad, but at least in patent law people are only hiring ECEs.

yeh man. since the renaissance, it's been a bitch trying to 'stay employed in the same line of work' for a really long time. somebody always comes along and improves the efficiency of it and you aren't 'as needed' anymore.

that's one of my biggest fears. i'm constantly thinking about what i need to learn or do to stay ahead of that wave.

isn't every species doing that though? adapting to their environments as it changes? mutating and evolving over time? evolution at its best in my opinion. whether it's some new machine invented, a new species invading your territory or an ice age coming out of nowhere, life seems to always find a way.

No, what is happening is that more people are working 2 or 3 jobs.
