Hmm....I just may have to try that now. Philosophy sent me a coupon for $15 off a $65 coupon and I'm a huge sucker for discounts. I always thought that Philosophy was overrated and overpriced but I'm quickly changing my mind.

might be too much Salicylic Acid in your products. I would go with a creamier cleanser for the evenings instead of the grapefruit. on a side note: The neutrogena grapefruit wash dried my face out like crazy.

so i went out and bought that clinque gel today. tried it out it seems pretty good, but only time will tell if it actually heals my face

quick question though, today in addition to being dried and red it actually began to get itchy and flakey (omg so gross wtf face)

so now that i'm home.... do i just moisturize the crap out of it or should I try rubbing off the dead skin first and then moisturizing. My instinct is to scrub it the hell off my face but that is probably going to just leave it raw and hurting which is probably not good

tl;dr should I exfoliate or not

Definitely just moisturize. I wouldn't even wash it with anything other than warm water. My skin did this in high school once, and washing/scrubbing just made it worse. (I used too much acne wash, and thought that using more acne wash would make it better. HUGE mistake).

DDK, I recommend the Bare Minerals Cleanser & Moisturizer. leaves your skin feeling absolutely AMAZING, not dried out, very soft, no harsh chemicals, etc etc.

to help clear up any breakouts, etc, they have this junk which is great too (kind of a pain in the ass to get used to, since its a powder you just add a splash of water to)

i just dropped like 100 bucks on all new bareminerals makeup (thought maybe the cheap stuff was part of the breakout prob too) so I will have to wait until i have the $$$ to invest in that but I'll def give it a try

i bought their anti-redness powder stuff in hopes it would help but yea it's a powder and i don't see how that will work but worth a try i guess

On a similar note, when/why should a woman start wearing makeup on her skin? I wear mascara and gloss on occasion ... And eye shadow once a month or so ... But what about foundation?

I know that it's good to wear one with SPF, but what else should I look for? What are the best brands for my skin? Or do I need a consultation? How do I determine the best makeup for my skin?

honestly if you can get away without wearing foundation, do it. When my skin is not being a pain in the ass with it's red blotchy bullshit, i just throw on some powder to calm down the shine a little bit

as for a consultation, i love sephora. the people that work there have always been not only super nice but super helpful. in my experience at least. I think you can actually schedule an appointment, but most times i just go in and go "i need ______" and they have no issue helping me out.

but be warned that I almost never leave that store without spending at least $100. I'm not the richest person ever so I if I'm going to spend the money I do it on the basics (good brushes, good foundation/powder, etc) and then eyeshadows and stuff I cheap out on b/c i wear a dif color every day anyway and i personally haven't had any issues with cheap eyeshadow, mascara, blush, etc

wow i talk way to much in this thread

Yeah, cheap mascara and lip gloss are great! My skin tone is consistent, but I know a lot of foundation has sunscreen/SPF, so it can be healthy for you.

I hear great things about Sephora, as yor recommended, ddk. Maybe I can start with travel-sized cosmetics so I don't dump a ton of money at the start?

Also, of the cheaper makeup brands (cover girl, maybelline, almay), what's the healthiest for your eyes and lips? I have a hard time differentiating between makeup brands.

Though I do LOVE urban decay eye shadows.

So I LOVE this girl and I am subscribed to her.

http://www.youtube.com/user/MakeupByTiffanyD

Usually, I am not friends with women like her because I would prob feel too much pressure to be pretty and stylish all the time and that is the total opposite of me. BUT!!! I like how personable she makes her tutorials and she is very honest with feedback, the fact that she rambles too often (which I LOVE, personally) and also when she does not do things very well.

i def agree about urban decay (but i cry when i drop them and they shatter)

and if you're concerned about spf, they make sunscreen made specifically for the face and also moisturizer with spf added so you don't need foundation for spf application. just fyi.

i don't really do stuff on my lips other than my 8093423 tubes of nivea chapstick. I'm addicted. that stuff is amazing. eyes, i really like milani brand, though I have just about every drug store brand imagineable. maybelline makes decent stuff. if you want organic, there's usually a whole part of the makeup section thats organic/earth friendly. I good brand i think is called philosophers or something like that. I like their concealer a lot actually (but's more to do with how they actually make one pale enough for me)

[Edited on October 6, 2011 at 10:47 PM. Reason : avoid covergirl. their stuff is pretty much shit.]

im a little late on the skin care discussion...

so i was recently diagnosed with rosacea anyone else?

its upsetting to me because it's something that has to be treated constantly. right now the dr wants me to wash with this special cleanser twice a day and put this gel on my face twice a day. i opted out of the pills as i'd prefer not to be on some pill for the rest of my life.

also she got me to buy this moisturizer with spf 48 thats formulated special for sensitive skin, specifically rosacea. shit cost $28 for 1.7oz!!

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001882/ for anyone unfamiliar with it

and my symptoms are very mild compared to the pictures. i have a family history and mostly it's just redness of the skin....almost all the time

boots didn't fit. sucks some boots do and then some do and then the extended calf ones are usually way to big.

I've got muscular calves, and for some reason the left one is slightly bigger. so odd i am

It's not really odd for you to have one limb that's uneven - many people have uneven feet, uneven arm length, etc..

I need foot pad suggestions - none of this Dr. Scholl's mess... I need some extra good ones :\

Yes, yes, and YES lol.

Foundation is bad for your skin regardless of what junk they throw in it. If you're looking for SPF protection just put on a facial sunscreen if you're going to be out and about. I use sunscreen and some concealer when necessary. If I feel like being a fancy pants I have this mineral powder stuff a guy at Sephora upsold me on last time I was there lol.

And yeah, Sephora is so bad for you wallet. Last time I was there I spent $200

my favorite "foundation"

Tarte's Smooth Operator Amazonian clay tinted moisturizer with SPF 20
http://tartecosmetics.com/tarte-item-smooth-operator-tinted-moisturizer

it's a tinted moisturizer so it it's not heavy, it's buildable, and it doesn't break me out (miracle). I also use
http://tartecosmetics.com/tarte-item-provocateur-powder
and
http://tartecosmetics.com/tarte-item-smooth-operator-finishing-powder

my t-zone gets really oily sans makeup and these products really help control that.

but they're magazines, not medical journals. they may be right but it's like using wiki for a research paper

I do not like the staff at Sephora, they have never been able to help me with my makeup issues.

I go in there knowing what I want, and buy it. Its a great store for that type of thing, but they're not the people I trust when it comes to product questions (sadly).

I have found the staff at Sephora to be great for helping me do things like choose colors to match my complexion, or showing me new products and techniques. They are not very helpful when it comes to things like finding a mascara that does not irritate my eyes (that drew a total blank stare), or recommending cleansing products, or anything with special circumstances or needs that weren't mainstream.

^yes exactly

I'm not easy to match in the foundation department, and every time I've been there, they would just pick one line to test on me and not even discuss other lines.

I give up.

^ I think that's because often the people they have working the displays are really working for that particular makeup company and not the overall store. So it's not in their best interest to recommend a different product line when they're there to pimp their product line.

Not everyone in the Sephora store is in that situation but I do know there have been a couple times I've been in there and the guy working the Smashbox aisle is a Smashbox seller. Kind of like how the perfume counters work in department stores.

plus they make commission or partial commission and have no training on other lines.

That's why you go around to counters.

But Estee Lauder owns Bobbi Brown, MAC, Origins, Clinique, Aveda, etc.

I don't wear foundation. I used to and it would make my skin feel yucky and often broke me out. I am also afraid that it will break down my skin elasticity. Maybe it won't but I can't change the thought of that fear from my mind. Kind of grateful I don't have to figure out the whole matching thing.

hahahahhahahahah freckles are so weird. i guess it's hard for me to explain because i don't even notice them but then again i've had 8 million of them on my face since i was born. i just think if i was to wear foundation, i would have a hard time finding something that worked well with my skin tone and freckles. luckily, i have good skin so i haven't had to worry much about it.

We did the "Love is Art" thing this afternoon, and it was a whole lot more fun that I even thought it was going to be. As promised, here are the pictures!

Here is the before picture, of the set up.

We started with just a bit of paint, and added more as needed. The 4oz of paint was PLENTY.

This is the final product.

The only thing missing from our kit was the body scrub, so it took forever to get the paint off. Now, we just have to find some place to mount the canvas for us. Does anyone have any recommendations?
