On the topic of the confessor breaking up with a girl -- there is no easy way to do it. You'll just have to man up, be straightforward and honest. Don't beat around the bush or make up a lame excuse (it's not you, it's me/etc.). Make sure you tell her why you don't want to be with her anymore so that she at least doesn't beat herself up about it.

And like minka said, don't do it in public, don't do it before she has to do something important, and get it over with quickly and concisely.
