some tips please:
I´m trying to photograph the moonrise and the sunset over a lake. I´ve been pretty successful with the sunsets, but the moon is always over exposed, and the reflection does not show well.
Also, when trying to photograph the moon rising above the trees on the horizon, it is always just an overexposed orb of light. How do you make the moon turn out clear. I have gotten some pretty cool pictures with maybe a 40 second bulb exposure of a palm tree in the foreground and a yellow moon rising above the treeline, but I would still like the moon to be a little more clear.
In general, when doing long exposures of very dark areas (stars, sky with or without moon) at night, what will the effect of a larger or smaller aperture be on the final photo?
Also, when sould/should i not use a lens hood?
obrigado

^ I'll have to think about that exposure that you're trying to get but for your second question:
Lens hoods are not really necessary. However, they help shield the lens from light when you're outdoors. It cuts down on the (I dont know what they're called) "orbs of light". Also, I use a lens hood when I work at the club, it helps protect my 24mm from getting spilled directly on the glass, and it also helps from the lens getting bumped on rocks or walls or anything else. Its a worthwhile investment. 7/14/2006 9:12:02 PM |

ditto on the moon question...it'd be nice to know for future reference 7/14/2006 9:14:03 PM |

As for the moon question: I'm assuming the moon is a helluvah lot brighter than anything else in a night shot you're shooting. If that's the case, you're not going to be able to get the scenery and the moon perfectly exposed in the same shot right out of the camera. You could take one photo of the scene (long exposure) then the same shot exposed for the moon (short exposure) and combine the two in photoshop. The reason you can't get both bright objects and dark objects to appear in a photograph like your eyes see it is that the CCD or CMOS sensor in your digicam does not have enough "latitude" to see both arrays of contrasting darks and lights. The wider the latitude, the more the film will see. Last I heard, digital had less latitude than print film which has less latitude than slide film.
Lens hood question: I always use a lens hood. They're technically useful in the daylight hours to prevent lens flair when the sun hits the lens at an angle. They're also, in my opinion and Docido's, very useful for protecting the lens. Since it's the most protruding part of the camera, it'll be the first thing to take the impact of a fall or from rubbing against the brick walls on campus 7/14/2006 11:03:02 PM |

Absolutely, I love to see the photos we come up with. There's a lot of talent in this thread, which is why I think it would be interesting to have a photography contest and a pool for the prize but this thread is sufficient in showcasing awesome skill. 7/16/2006 10:15:41 PM |

Here are some photos I took last month...Let me know what you think.
Power lines near Rolesville.
Should probably crop a little of the grass off the bottom of this one.
I went a little far with the color level adjustments on this one.

^ I do believe I walked down that same pier, it looks so familiar. The shots I took at night were not nearly as colorful, and I don't think you ruined the photo with the color correction (though the lamp looks a bit extreme). Where did you take it?] 7/17/2006 6:09:11 AM |

You probably have been there. It's in Beaufort on the waterfront. Still look familiar?

Thx man.
Here are a few more:
Martin Street Music Hall. I think this place is closed or under a new name now.
Some bad ass graffiti. THE PRESSURE IS ON. lol.
Lake Gaston Sunset. Photo taken with the lens about 2.5" above the water while I kneeled on a bulkhead.
Skack uses a Tamron Di lens and has hairy legs. I wonder if I could sharpen that Tamron logo and sell the photo to them?

^ Thanks for the compliment. You're welcome to use them as a desktop background. I'm really just putting them out here so that I can get some opinions/critiques on them. I'd love to step up my game to the point that I can get some freelance work.
I've had this digital Rebel for a year and a half and I still learn something almost everytime I go out shooting. The lens that I bought last December definately helped and I picked up a nice circular polarizing filter this past spring that has done a lot for my water/sky shots. Still, I racked up a lot of great photos with the stock 18-55mm lens that came with the camera.
