the astros cut morgan ensberg (!) -- JS is retarded if he doesn't go after this guy

--

so the deal is apparently salty + andrus + 2 pitching prospects

i'm not crazy about this, we have a shitty chance of resigning the guy -- i would have been much happier with a sign and trade, obviously -- especially considering that JS doesn't like negotiating during the season

either way we're giving up some really good prospects here, especially if matt harrison is one of the pitchers

and packaged in the deal is 37 year old reliever ron mahay OH BOY

This deal is better than people are giving it credit for. Mahay is a LH reliever and with Ledezma getting released, the Braves had to get someone. Now as for the trade:

Salty could be great one day, but he would have to learn to be a 1B because McCann is locked in as the Braves future at C. Even if Salty does turn out to be awesome, he'll only be as good as Texeria. The other players the Braves are packaging are AA or lower players who are basically hit and miss. I assume Andrus was included. The Braves already have a Escobar and Johnson as their future middle IF. They could afford to lose this guy. I'm not excited about losing two young arms, but the Braves are trying to win now.

As for resigning Tex, they should be able to keep him assuming they let Andruw go. Also if Liberty media does decide to increase the payroll by $10 million, that will offset most of any salary increase Tex is going to get.

I hope you are kidding. Ever since he got hurt early in 2006, he has been absolute garbage and has zero power now. He cannot even remotely help the Braves since we now have Escobar to fill in for Chipper when he has his weekly injury.

The deal is probably going to be Saltalamacchia, Andrus, and Harrison for Teixeira, and Mahay.

I don't mind saltalamacchia going, I think he is excellent bait for trade and a every 4th or 5th day catcher. I'm not wild about the 36yo Mahay... And I don't like giving up Andrus and Harrison who could be fantastic one day...

If they're going to acquire Teixeira, they better sign him next year. He played college ball at GT, so maybe that will go in our favor...

^ I hope he gets made fun of in the locker room for this. NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE, NIIIIIIIIIIICE, NIIIICE

If the Braves didn't have McCann, then this would be a terrible deal, but....

Since they have McCann locked in for a long time, I think it's a decent deal. You can't just stockpile two good players at one position when you have a glaring hole at one of the main offensive production positions on the field.

Overpaid for a guy who will almost definitely hit the open market after '08. Boras won't give any discount, that much is guaranteed... and it will come down to the Braves new ownership group actually opening up the wallet. Teixera is guaranteed to draw at least Beltran/Wells money over 7 years.

Basically 3 of your Top 5 prospects are gone, including your most highly rated one. Better hope you win a championship one of the next two years..

Quote :

Yunel Escobar isn't a very highly touted prospect. He will be a serviceable middle IF utility type but Andrus has all star, Top 5 in the game type potential... Generally I agree about low-class A guys but his ceiling is probably even higher than Saltalamacchia's..

harrison wasn't included, we only gave up two of our top five. and that includes salty who isn't very convincing in my eyes.

andrus is still only 18, so who knows what will happen over the next three or four years. regardless, he wouldn't be ready for the big leagues for a long time -- i don't mind giving him up

and escobar is still our top infield prospect according to most

either him or van pope

while it sucks to give up a lot of good talent, we got a guy who can contribute immediately, which is what we need. now if we can just get a reliable starter, we're set

actually i think we need another lefty in the bullpen

smoltz and hudson will get their wins
james has been getting better as the season has progressed
Buddy will give us a good start about 60 percent of the time

and then Reyes just needs to pitch 4 or 5 innings and then give it to the bullpen

good move. Saltys talents were gonna be wasted here. McCann is our starting catcher, end of story. Our first basemen have been TERRRRRRIBLE. Thorman couldnt hit the side of the barn lately and Franco is a lil older. Andrus is 18.....he has atleast 3-4 years before he even sniffs the bigs. Hell, he could end up being a bust. Escobar is our future shortstop.

I'm shaking. Kruk has been picking the Phillies all year long and Phillips has been sleeping with his secretary in the press box at Shea picking the Braves all year long...

Mets are about to acquire Luis Castillo for 2 B or C-level prospects to fill the void in the 2 hole... good for Reyes.

*** Dotel would be a good acquisition though...

what would our lineup be with Teixeira?(btw, can we just call him Tex??? that shits too hard to spell)

1. Harris/Escobar
2. Renteria
3. Chipper
4. Druw/Tex
5. Tex/Druw
6. McCann
7. Frenchy
8. Johnson/Diaz
9. pitcher

I think the Braves will actually have a good shot to keep Tex assuming they let Andruw leave. Plus if they do resign Tex, he is still only 27 and they will have him during his prime years.

Escobar has showed no signs of being anything other than a solid major leaguer so far. Granted teams will adjust to him, but hopefully he'll develop even more as teams figure out how to pitch to him. As for Andrus, I hate to lose the guy, but what percentage of the "truly" great minor leaguers pan out? 20%? 10%? The Braves rarely trade players who later make an impact. The only ones traded during Scherholtz's reign are Jason Schmidt and Adam Wainwright. I trust what Scherholtz is doing.

Seriously, must suck to go to the team with the most blatantly apathetic fans. It's almost like a home game for big name teams down here.

do you live here in Atlanta? Because it's easy to say you're a fan, but trust me, unless a big name team or pitcher is in town, the fans are a joke. And nobody gives a shit about the wins...we all know how sad/pathetic it is that they only got one WS with all that talent in the 90's.

How many Braves games have you actually been too? I'm not saying the Braves have great fans, but there are reasons why the Braves "struggle" with attendance that has nothing to do with the fans sucking or being apathetic. The Braves are 14th in total attendance this year so it's not like no one is showing up.

Braves fans care about winning as much as any other team's fans. Sure we've been somewhat spoiled so when we do win, we don't shit a brick like Brewer or Angels fans, but that simply goes with the terrority of being so successful.

The Braves made a mistake in building Turner field next to old Fulton County Stadium and in the fucking ghetto where it is dangerous to go to a night game. In addition many casual Brave fans stopped going to the games once it became clear that AOHELL did not give a shit about the team winning.

there's also a bronson arroyo rumor floating around right now... tho it would take alot (not sure what we have left), i would like that alot.

maybe we can flip dotel to them, since they REALLY need the pen help... and IMO we need starting pitching more than anything right now. dotel plus some prospects plz.

I'm loving this trade for Tex, its already being talked about with the buzz of when we got McGriff back in 1993. Other than Shef, this is one of the bigger trades the Braves have made in a long long time as far as offense goes. Lets just hope Liberty Media is willing to pay to keep him here. His numbers are off a little this year due to injury, but he has been a beast the past 4. If he can return to that, we deserve to pay him whatever it takes. We are only 4.5 back right now, hopefully this trade will spark a little rally and we can get back on top in the NL East, or win the WC.

Hampton is killing us. Making something like $14mil to sit on the bench all year. Jesus.

Exactly. So JS must have the OK to offer him whatever he wants. Has he ever made a trade like this in the past and not followed through? Minus Sheff, because they didn't give up this much for him.

It's not a 3 month rental. Now we have options when dealing with Andruw Jones. We don't have to get robbed to keep him and his low ass average. If he wants to be an FA, he can be. We can fill the 3 or 4 spot with Texeira and not miss him a bit. Plus, we'll have more salary to be able to pay him.

Afterall, I think this was a good trade.
