yeah, we had a quick little brownout thing over the weekend where the power kinda flashed, so I turned my shit off immediately. I had the power go off once during a storm though and my hdtv and PS3 were both on and it scarred the shit out of me.

Event with a surge protector, when the power goes out the fan has to keep going when power is turned off so the bulb can get destroyed. I'm thinking about getting UPS backup.

I just started using a 550VA UPS to power the PS3 and DLP. I have not tested how long it can last without power yet.

they were nice, never attempted to troubleshoot anything, and it took less than five minutes to exchange address information and all that. They didnt ask where i got the unit, if it worked previously to the problem and they didnt even need a issue a return identification number. They did ask the units serial number but said they could process my return without the number.

They are shipping a return box with instructions to my office and as soon as it is returned, they will issue another new unit (they made sure that I knew that it was not a refurbished unit, or my original unit fixed), and a credit for any games that I purchased at the PS Store that will be lost. It may take up to 10 days for the new unit to come in because we live on the East Coast - Ill keep yall updated on that one. The new unit will have a new 1-year warranty from replacement date as well.

So far, the service has been great

^ Can't really beat that.

Interesting article regarding the new Rockstar exclusive title and the future of HD gaming:

http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9751999-1.html

Quote :
"Cnet has speculated that any high-definition AAA games console title will be too large to fit onto a DVD, based on the fact that Rockstar commented its new exclusive Franchise for the PS3 won't hit until at least 2009 which requires the total capacity of the Blu-ray disc medium."

I guess I mean that by 2009 games will start pushing the capacity on normal DVD's...that's kind of a 'no shit' factor to me. They'll have games with 2-dvd sets easy, or on bluray/hd-dvd format from then on out. I can see that, but it doesn't really change anything.

2 years out is a long time...bet you money the new system talk will be out by then.

Right......

Look, maybe you're knew to this whole gaming thing but the minimum development cycle for almost any game these days is 2 years. I can almost guarantee you that every single game that will be released in 2009 (see Resident Evil 5) is already well in development. Meaning that if DVD storage capacity is an issue for games this generation, it's already something developers are struggling with.

Although I'm very very close to getting one free anytime now from one of those online shopping promotional things.

LAIR DELAYED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 4

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/08/01/lair-delayed-until-september-4th/

Quote :
"Wow, even I didn’t see this one coming! Due to an extra step in QA testing to enhance the community features in the game, the release of LAIR, originally set for August 14th, has changed to September 4, 2007. Natural challenges that arose while finalizing the offline game to include key online features - such as leaderboards and medal systems - have led to the difficult choice of pushing back the release date. We appreciate everyone’s excitement and patience for the game and look forward to its release on September 4."

Look fanboy...I can see why you are wearing on 'ps3 sucks' talk but I'm not abiding by you slamming the 360 which has already paid off its worth in sheer fun to me twice over. No doubt about it.

Sure the failure rates were bad, Sure MS had to eat it and extended to a 3 year free warranty for everyone, which was an appropriate action (so if it happens we are all covered). Sure, it was a mistake on some of the consoles. Sure, MS is revising the chip to lower heat standards to .65 die as we speak to be released next month. But that doesn't mean it happened to every console...I mean shit, i've had mine since launch with no problems. Many others have. My friends have. Granted, it doesn't make this situation acceptable....but a fatal issue? some big recall? No. Not by any stretch.

I've heard of Ps3's overheating too, even Wii's brick. The 360 is more susceptable than the rest - I admit, no doubt.... but it's an awesome system with lots of fantastic games and the best online system out of any thing out there right now, and owners will stand by it and to be honest, I'll gladly trump the hours clocked on that baby to up there with some of the most played systems ever...and i've had them all. It's up here with SNES, NES, and PS2. NES/SNES maybe in front for sure.

Hint: It's because it has a lot of good games now, and in the pipe for 2007, Xbox live is way beyond PSN or shit ass Wii friend codes, Live! arcade is flushed out and good.

I have no doubt PS3 will get there, just not yet. Talk to me again in 08. Just like 360 will get there in terms of stability by the end of the year if not before then.

I don't think Kainen is really a troll at all. I appreciate him in this thread because he;s honest but he's not a dick and he actually appreciates all the consoles. I think they are all pretty great too and I don't have a problem with any of them.

I think you made some good points too. Although I don't think any console will ever match the amount of hours I spent on the NES. I had an SNES but just thinking of the shear amount of times I play Super Mario Bros, Contra, Double Dragon II, Punch Out, etc. I don't think anything matches that.

I dunno though, I played the hell out of my SNES. those consoles never blew out either. I never heard of anyone's breaking until like after 10 years maybe. Mine still work for the most part. I'm pretty sure my SNES will out last any console I ever buy.

Oh I'm sorry, I guess the 7 games I own for the PS3 and have thuroughly enjoyed for months must be some kind of mirage. You're right - there is nothing to play on the PS3...I must have been dreaming when I spent hours playing through all those games.

You know what, I don't give a fuck if you won't "abide by" me or not. I think the 360 is a piece of shit with a couple of good games. I'm not afraid to admit it. I will not let one killer game blind me to the fact that the hardware, when it actually works, is already out of date.

And don't give me this shit about no recall - with what appears to be upwards of a 33% failure rate, there sure as shit should have been a recall. but that would have killed MS's console business then and there. Instead, they drug the consumers through shit for almost two years before they finally fessed up and took a $1B (A FUCKING BILLION DOLLARS) hit for past and FUTURE failures. Just to be clear, they would have to sell 2.5 million consoles at a pure profit to make that money back.

If this kind of talk makes me same fanboy, so be it. But the fact that you can actually sit there with a straight face and tell me MS doesn't have severe issues with their console makes you such a bigger fanboy that you are probably capable of comprehending. "I own a yugo and mine didn't blow up, so it must be a fine car." Jesus christ get a fucking grip.

Look, the PS3 could very well fail. Sony fucked up enough shit coming out of the gate to put them behind the 8-ball. But I'm tired of 360 owners acting like their shit don't stink.

Kainen: go away already. You only come in here to talk up your 360, even though there's a en entire thread dedicated to doing just that. I personally don't care about the 360 until they fix it. So it's simple: go away, and don't come back until you own a ps3 and have something worthwhile to contribute. (ps: repeating stuff you read on blogs doesn't count as "thought evoking")

I didn't say it wasn't a big deal for MS...it is. I said it was! But I don't feel that it's a deterrent for those buying the console much anymore now that they've taken the action to fix the systems. Next month we'll be the .65 dies with no problem, the elites don't have the problem out there, they'e dropping prices in a week or so, new core systems don't have the problem, and for those that did - they did put in place a 3 year warranty and everything is free and covered.

Of course it's an issue - a real shitty one...but it's not causing the system to fail guys. It still sells in our market quite well. Xbox live is very impressive, there is a ton of fun with the system. Its not like PS3's are even outselling the 360 right now (YET, maybe in 08 it will change)

And look, I don't need a PS3 to contribute to the thread - for fuck's sake, I've got one coming to me via a free promotion site within 2-3 weeks.!!!!!..so it's not like im ROOTING for it to fail. It will be in my fucking library. What's my god damn motivation then? Talk shit about my own system?

A 600$ paperweight? A dedicated folding@home machine? No. I actually want the PS3 to pickup steam and get a diverse library. But I'm trying to be critical yet productive here. And in that, slamming the 360 for lack of games is asinine. Goalielax you may find that Gears of War and Forza are the only games worth a shit on the console, but that perplexes me. For the other 99% of us and every owner I know deeply disagrees with you. Hell...look at their gamerpoints, or anyone's gamerpoints...and it screams they disagree. Can't get past 1K or so without owning games, playing all the stuff on live arcade (which is robust by now) and owning multiple, multiple games. Or at least renting a majority of them and having lots of fun. That's what I do: although I do own nearly 10 games so far.

And this is regardless if they appear on the PC or not. That factor matters little for those that dont care about PC gaming...even if you are some champion of it. I even own some games on both platforms becuase I love playing on my 6.1 audio surround system, HD tv, and on my freakin couch.

The PS3 will see the same eventuality. I'd likely play those titles on the console rather then the PC when that applies.

Drop the hostility.. I'm not rubbing this 'you bought a ps3 finger' in your face

Well I can appreciate being 'less than a dick' than others'...I suppose I'll take it.

OK yeah you got me there. Mentally I was thinking like on monthly/YTD scales but that I supppose doesn't really take into account the price drop and that's making a big difference for sure, especially in recent weeks for the PS3. Also, quite a few people want that 60gig model before the Emotion hardware chip gets thrown out so they can have better backwards compatibility. That matters to alot of hardcores, including myself to a degree...wish they wouldn't do that. Although it works in their favor as there's nothing we can do if we want hardware emulation for ps2 games. alas.

It will be very very intresting to see what happens to this graph into next year:

GTA IV Delayed until Second Quarter '08

http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN0238261720070802

Note that this is for both consoles. Man this sucks. But I would definitely rather the game come out running well than it being rushed and playing half-assed. I think I will have plenty of games to play until then though, so its all good. Only thing is that now it looked like GTAIV, Killzone, and MGS4 are coming out at the same time.

Honestly, I think that this is going to be a pretty significant hit on 360s. This game is definitely a console seller, and while the 360 is significantly cheaper than the PS3 right now and the PS3 doesn't have as many games, figured this game along would increase 360 sales big time. Now with the delay and that much time for more PS3 stuff (not to mention another price cut which we know is coming for the holiday season, blu ray success, etc.), should be an interesting situation.

In other news, I watched 300 on the PS3 last night in blu ray and it was just flat amazing. Totally worth $23 bucks.

I actually think they it's a GOOD thing that GTA was delayed. There were many reports that the game engine had serious texture issues, and there were lots of bugs and things that were really going to compromise that franchise. Texture streaming engine was ugly too, bulidings in the distance supposedly looked like crap.

I suppose, this is too big of a franchise to push out the door half baked. One of my best friends is a Sr. Editor at Gamespot and he said it was sorely needed. So.....like they say - "you can delay a game and make it a good one, but you can never fix a bad game". I probably butchered that quote.

As far as impact to sales, I don't think it will hurt 360 sales any more than PS3 sales to be honest with you. It's not like there's a shortage of other games on the 360 (at all) in 2007...it's the strongest quarter for the system to date. And this one isn't even an exclusive title so if someone wanted it and didn't have either console, there was a fair shot they could pick up a 60gig PS3 while it's cheaper. Now that marketing ave. doesnt exist, for either platform really.

Fact: Microsoft pushed GTAIV really hard at E3.
Fact: Microsoft paid Rockstar $50 million to produce exclusive content for GTAIV
Fact: Microsoft included GTAIV as part of their "best holiday lineup ever" pitch.
Fact: This hurts Microsoft a lot more than it hurts Sony.

^ very possibly. Although I still think MS has lots of big time games droping this quarter so it doesnt slow the system down too much for new users. Hell I wasnt' even going to buy GTA but I saw this as the best season ever for my 360.

I don't think any of us can do anything but speculate. I know that MS pushed it as part of it's huge game onslaught this quarter at E3, but it's totally up in the air how much it hurts either. I mean, it isn't good - it's a hardware mover for both systems.

For all of us console owners this isn't a big deal, just be patient. This is a funny argument to me also because I don't even like GTA games. Never played San Andreas or Vice City. I did own the one in NYC. So..i dunno, not even sure how good this will be. Most GTA games control like a hot steaming pile of crap. Bad framerate too. Anyhow.

Holdup could be :

360 and DVD9 content issues
or
PS3 Cell processor screwing with developers, ruining the 360 version. PS3 has really difficult cell architecture.

I don't know though, there is a mass of other AAA titles this holiday. They could just be sitting on it, improving it, waiting for a more 'poised' and less competitive market now.

You're telling me man, this holiday season is gonna be off the charts as far as potential awesome games. Right now I'm looking at:

Bioshock (PC)
Warhawk (PS3)
Heavenly Sword (PS3)
Metroid Prime 3 (Wii)
Smash Brothers (Wii)
HL2:Ep2/Team Fortress 2/Portal (PC)
Hellgate: London (PC)
Mario Galaxy (Wii)
SupCom: Forged Alliance (PC)
Crysis (PC)
Uncharted (PS3)

I'm hoping at least half of those bomb or get delayed till next year
