It looks like with the options I want, and the sights, itll be around $900 total for the build, does that seem reasonable?" |
"Reasonable" depends on what options you get. But I will say anything you order from Del-Ton will be reasonable. You can't really go cheaper than Del-Ton without going to crappy quality.
Quote : | "The parts kit from Del-Ton, including the detachable front and rear sights and shipping is $700 bucks. It looks like I can get the stripped lower for about $200 from gunbroker (and my gun guy will do $15 FFL transfers).
Any thoughts?
Should I be able to do this cheaper?" |
You can save money by getting a fixed front sight. Most of the time it won't get in the way of optics. Also, with the cost of your Del-Ton kit it sounds like you might have added a chrome lined barrel or something like that. Stick with the basics. You don't need a chrome lined barrel, M4 feed ramps, free float or railed forearms, etc.
$215 for a stripped lower is too much. Try to find one locally or at the gunshow this weekend. I got my DPMS lower for $130 at PDHSC. I imagine they're more like $150 now with the craze...go gunbroker might actually be your only option simply due to availability.11/19/2008 11:20:24 PM |

$150?
try like $240
I bought mine from there for $119 and one week later they doubled in price 11/19/2008 11:22:35 PM |

Shit.
I'm glad I thought ahead
BTW, my friend ordered a basic carbine upper from Model 1 sales (wouldn't recommend them. delton is better) and they told him it would be 12-18 weeks for delivery. I imagine Del-Ton would be similar.

damn I really got mine at the right time
friday after the election I picked up 2 AR-15 lowers and 1 AR-10 lower from PDHSC for normal prices, the next week I got my RRA upper and my Armalite AR-10 upper for basically normal prices as well along with my parts kits. Not to mention the hi-cap mag purchase I made before the election.
I could have probably made a good $600 profit if I had just sold all the lowers I bought...problem is I want an AR-10 and an AR-15 11/20/2008 12:18:00 AM |

Yeah, im not so worried about thier backorder time frame, they seem like a good company from everything I read on AR15.com, so I'll probably order from them regardless of backorder status.
They also sell stripped lowers for $100, so I fired off an email to them asking if they had any estimate on getting those in stock. Theres a gun show here in Charleston in a week or so, im gonna hit that up and see what I can make off with. 11/20/2008 8:48:06 AM |

I wouldnt bother to ask when they are getting them in, just go ahead and back order everything you want. they will send it when they get it. 11/20/2008 8:53:42 AM |

Well, with a stripped lower, my FFL guy has to be expecting it since i dont live in NC.
Im going to go ahead and order my parts kit, and worry about the stripped lower later. Want to check at the gun show and see if i can pick one up for <$150 at the show. 11/20/2008 10:10:13 AM |
FenderFreek All American 2805 Posts user info edit post |
Good luck, but that's very wishful thinking considering that gun shows are typically higher than average. You probably should place an order with Del-Ton for everything you want to build with, and you'll get it as soon as they get it in stock. Their lowers are still some of the most reasonably priced out there since they didn't double their prices overnight like *some* retailers...
Just tell them to let you know when your lower is about to ship and you can give a call to your local FFL. 11/20/2008 12:19:06 PM |

I hit that poll earlier and discussed it a bit, but we'll take all the help we can get. Apparently some folks still think that CCW-ers turn into gunslinging cowboys once they step on campus even though we're otherwise rational and discreet about it everywhere else we go.
The poll is also purposely biased in it's questioning by making the "no" option dependent upon the completely stupid and irrational assumption that LEO's are going to walk into a gunfight unaware of who the bad guy is. Pretty much all CCW-related defensive incidents last less than 10 seconds, and the cops show up long after they're over because the assailant has been shot or fled the scene. Contrast that with most school-related incidents where the cops show up after it's long over, but only to tag bodies and call on the coroner because the shooter left a trail of victims.
Which is more dangerous in reality? 11/21/2008 11:50:51 AM |

ok- a lil off topic, but I'm going to the gun show tomorrow, and I wanted to know if anyone had some booths in particular that I should check out. I'm bringing my permits with me, as well as some cash and my check book/check card
and when is everyone else heading out there?
also, what is the better day to head out there?

One line was twice as long as the distance from the ticket booth to the turkey shoot. What everyone didn't realize was there are two lines. The second line was shorter than the breezeway...
BTW, one vendor is a mil spec ammo contractor. They were selling 50 rounds of 223 55gr soft points for $10.25. I can't reload them for much less. Unfortunately when I saw it they only had one bag left. 11/24/2008 8:23:34 PM |

I wish that i could do that.
The company that I work for in Slovakia has access to f/a vz58s directly from military stockpiles. They cost us around $20 each. However, for some applications, we require s/a and they run around $300-400 each. This is why im looking for a cheaper/simpler way to do the conversion ourselves. Although this will likely be moot when we get a full time gunsmith early next year. 11/25/2008 12:47:10 AM |

i'd like to see what it would look like if he put a laser or a light (or some sort of combo) on the under rail... that might take away the aesthetic quality that I'm not liking
now that i checked out that article, they have a picture of one with a light, and it looks good
how expensive and hard to find is that ammo it takes?

Truck? Car? Concealed weapons permit? Guncase?
Probably the easiest way with lowest chance of getting hassled if pulled over is locked in gun cases, unloaded, in the trunk. Do a few google searches of transportation of firearms for each state you pass through. Each state has different laws and guidelines to follow. 11/27/2008 11:06:14 PM |
