Okay, they're finished! I ended up having enough to make 2!

This one is not glued down yet...so I might change it a little.

This one is finished...the image is poor quality but there are some small feathers around the crystal in the middle.

we just went to key west for our (belated) honeymoon...got back 3/3. A beautiful wedding spot would be, imo, Dry Tortugas or the beach at Fort Zachary Taylors. Honeymoon I got tips, pros and cons. we had a GREAT time there for our hm that's for sure!

I finished my wrap dress that I made without a pattern. The silky jersey fabric was kind of expensive but it was enough to make 1 and 1/2 dresses. I would need another large piece to do the skirt of dress number 2. This one was a pain in the ass but I am glad I finished it. I am not sure if my girls want me to make theirs and they just pay for the fabric (about $50) or if they just want to buy from Victoria's Secret for $95 (give or take for a coupon)....

What do you think? Pic is blurry bc it is a cell phone picture.

If I were them, I'd rather pay less and have you make them. That's a nice looking dress, looks like it fits well (they won't need to have alterations or anything), and in 40 years when you're looking back at your photos, you can tell your grandkids you made the dresses yourself.

But then YOU would need to factor in whether the time and effort is worth it to you. As a bride you're busy enough without worrying about saving your bridesmaids $40 each.

That's true. I guess I kind of look at it like a fun project. There were some annoying parts, sure, but overall, it took maybe 2 hours if I don't have any major screw ups...which with my dress, I had to resew it because I turned some piece out wrong.

I posted three pics of the dress in my gallery. Check it out
It's really comfortable and easy to make. I am taking it for a bridesmaid to try on today. We will see how she likes it since she is the girl with the biggest bust. *crosses fingers*

Also, they have Dessy dresses at the bridal shop in MacGregor Village...they are charging like $230 for the twist dress, which is outrageous, but you can go there to try it on if you think you might like it..

LOL

Yeah my wife did not want a strapless dress - she is more classic and hates those.

Eric really wanted to pick the first dance song and I didn't really mind... UNTIL he picked Lonestar's "Amazed" >.< I like the song but it's very.... I don't know... 90's country wedding

So he thought about it again and picked "Then" by Brad Paisley

I think Justin and I are settled on Pistol by Dustin Kensrue, lead singer of Thrice.

I love how you curse when I wake you up
And sweetly demand that I fill your cup.
I follow your cool gun powder glare
Honey, you lay me bare.

You're the girl of my dreams
And a pistol it seems, but you shoot me straight and true
Time to lay down my bets,
Oh, I put all my money on you.

When I'm in the dark, girl, you bring me to light.
It seems like you're almost always right.
So keep boxing my ears when I sew them shut.
Baby, you sure are tough.

You're the girl of my dreams
And a pistol it seems, but you shoot me straight and true
Time to lay down my fears,
Honey, I feel so safe around you.

If the tiller man taught me anything,
It's that a hard-headed woman is what I need
To help me to always do my best.
Baby, my life is blessed.

You're the girl of my dreams
Darling, please wear this ring
You're an angel through and through.
Time to lay down my life,
Honey, I'd do it gladly for you.

Time to lay down my life,
Honey, I'd do it gladly for you

^I like that one too. And I played "Moving Mountains" (I don't know the first thing about love song) for my students today.

The Alchemy Index is amazing too. I love the entire Fire and Water compilation.

Speaking of songs in a wedding thread...I think the first father daughter dance is gonna have to be Sugarpie, Honeybunch.

I've read through a lot of pages, but can't remember....has anyone done their ceremony and reception in downtown Raleigh? If so, any suggestions? I thought it would be nice to have a horse and carriage ride from the ceremony to the reception. We were also thinking of just having both done in the same venue. Our budget is around 10-15k so I thought maybe having it all in one place would save some time and money.

For those who weren't married in a church, what did you do about music?

Also, have any of you paid for accommodations for your bridesmaids? I read that you're supposed to, but my mom didn't know of such a thing.

^ my fiancée and i looked at marbles and really liked it (though we did opt for somewhere else)...they have a fairly exhaustive list of approved vendors...pricing marbles as the venue and using one of the approved vendors fell within your range

we have a church as our backup in case it rains, but we're getting married outside at a place that has outdoor speakers...if they didn't, we have a friend with a decent set of speakers and board that did the outdoor music for the ceremony for a friend's wedding last year

we're considering using the speakers, but i think we're more interested in a string quartet or something similar for the ceremony

we're not putting up our bridesmaids or groomsmen...maybe we're tacky

Thanks for the info. I actually just asked my brother to ask Marbles about pricing since he works there

That's good to hear about the accommodations. I mean, I would rather NOT pay to put them up, but I didn't know what was standard. I've only been in weddings where I didn't need accommodations.

I *think* you are only supposed to pay for accommodations if you are doing a destination wedding. I got married in Vegas so my parents paid for the flights and hotel for my bridesmaids.

We did not pay for accomodations for our bridal party. However, we put a pretty penny toward other items or gifts to help out on the expenses for our bridal party.

I get to join the discussion!

Newly engaged, I'm very interested in learning the etiquette of wedding planning. Everyone we've told has been very nice and offered to help with planning. The problem I'm already running into is that all these people who have offered to help have very strong opinions (and some good advice). So should I release most of my powers to these family members/friends who have offered to take control?

BTW, I don't want to get stressed out.

^congrats, and that is soooooo cute!

it really depends on what you want and what you have to work with.

the things that are most important to you...by all means. do yourself!!!
the things that dont matter as much you can hand off to other people.
time and budget will also play a huge factor!!

it all boils down to what you and your future hubby want!
