They absofuckinglutely MUST segment the new divisions by geography. Any half hearted football fan knows whos in the SEC East. No one outside of the Bible Belt knows or cares whos in the ACC Atlantic.

yeah, im really surprised the SEC didn't take them (if the report is true). Maybe the SEC has bigger programs in mind.

West Virginia is not a "get". Downs level scholastically, a national perception as a backwoods institute, and a market smaller than Fuquay Varina. Yes, they're solid in both major sports. But its not like they have a track record of sustained dominance in either. Not choking as four touchdown favorites over Pitt a few years ago and going to the NC game would have been a feather in their cap, but they just don't bring much to the table outside of that. But this isn't about football, and it certainly isn't about basketball. Its about dollars, and WVU's inclusion wouldn't bring enough of them to justify the move.

oh man i didn't even consider that this would be an opportunity to get rid of the stupid conference names. that'd be great.

Looks like the ACC has pretty much conceded that we'll never be a top football conference, so bolstering our basketball programs is the best way to go, imo. Sure, there's more money in football, and we'll get some of that. But with these additions, and hopefully a couple more key additions, we'll be untouchable in basketball.

That'll be our niche... which is good, because really, basketball is, has, and always will be the ACC's premiere sport.

i flat out do not understand people who think this.

the big east is/was the crown prince of basketball conferences, and they're currently trying to figure out how to remain a conference. being the best basketball conference does not mean a single thing.

Am I crazy for thinking the SEC might like Kansas? They won't upset the cart in football (seriously, the SEC is strong enough that they don't need to get another football power) and they'll add serious basketball cred.

Although Mizzou would be a more logical geographic choice.

Yeah, on second thought I probably am just crazy.

You don't have to be the best football conference, just be competent and geographically relevant enough to get good tv contracts. The trick is to maintain that relevance and bolster basketball, which they did this time around. UConn would certainly help with that going forward. Rutgers is a slightly different story, they help geographically but don't really bring anything else to the table. I wouldn't mind them in the ACC, but there's probably someone better.

^^The ACC has a much stronger footing in football than the Big East did...half the Big East's basketball teams didn't even play football.

Get Mizzou, and Kansas makes plenty of sense. They have a strong rivalry.

That would mean K-State would have to come, and there's your 16 team SEC. Kansas, K State, Mizzou, A&M.

Speaking of ECU, do they now obtain their dream of joining a BCS league and join the Big East? They are a better football program than Syracuse, so maybe it's not a complete loss for the Big East.

No TV market, crap academics and not a super athletic dept as a whole.

I get the sense Rutgers may eventually end up big ten with ND.

Boeheim is going to have to get over it, because it's still likely to be in Greensboro every other year.

Not the ones on the first post, those were dumb. But everyone knew that the Big 12 and Big East were dead on the first page. My predictions about teams joining the ACC look pretty good so far, hopefully I'm wrong about FSU and Miami leaving though.

Damn you, you made me go look it up.

I came up with a dutch actor, a revolutionary war colonel (who the university is named after, apparently it's HIS), a bunch of other miscellaneous Danes, and a character from the Fire Emblem video games.

early on all I paid attention to was the ACC and I thought that a school having "state" in its name meant it had to be in the capital city of the state, since ncsu was raleigh and fsu was tallahassee

and ohio state was always on TV and they were in columbus

how do people not understand why we'd look at rutgers over wvu?

what does wvu add money-wise?

not to mention, rutgers is a pretty good public research university. they fit well into the academic culture, even if you think it's a bullshit reason to build a conference on.

boeheim is just an angry old whiner

he bitches about money, but he gets paid $1.2 million a year to stand near basketball players

pretty sure his hot wife didn't marry his henry waxman-looking ass because she was attracted to his "love of the game"

he is correct about greensboro though

^^^Rutgers does makes sense academically and as far as bringing a new TV market...but they suck at basketball and are average or below average in football. That's why people (including myself) don't want Rutgers.

If it's all about business, what's this Academics nonsense you keep talking?

Sure, Rutgers has a sweet potential market, but are their attendance figures, ratings, and willingness to travel better than West Virginia?

Without one or both of UConn/Ruthers then the NYC market is still split. You can say it's not a college sports town all you want but the advertising revenue on NYC stations is huge..

Just because a school is bad now doesn't mean they'll be bad forever. Rutgers has shown the potential to have respectable teams, they've invested in their program and facilities, and downplaying the TV market and academics is dumb because they do have to factor in, even if it is to a lesser degree then some other considerations.
