^^^^ Next time I fly frontseat during the day, I'll try to video our inverted pull into a 70 degree dive into the break overhead the runway at 500+ kts.

of course, nothing we do is as cool as a strike eagle...


we took off tonight on goggles and raised the gear/flaps at maybe 20' off the runway, then accelerated out at about 50-60' for a couple of miles...then pulled up, punched flares, and headed for our mission. i wish i could've had a video of that, but again, it was way dark (like, moon below the horizon dark).

In fairness, you probably save more lives than a Strike Eagle. That and you get to be in a real branch.


I remember watching the 18s leave from there. Wheels up, nose vertical, gone in 60 seconds. Of course I could always tell when a 6B was landing because it sounds like a Russian Airliner with 3 of its for engines on fire.

yeah, the Prowler is way loud. I think the Hornet is even louder when it's in blower, but they're pretty quiet as long as they're at mil. Down low, though, we're probably even faster than they are as long as they keep the burners off (and if they don't, they'll be out of gas in short order).

the USMC AVPLAN just got released...Prowler is supposed to stay around until like FY18 or 19, until it is replaced by the F-35 (after the Hornet and the Harrier). They say that the Corps won't have any more NFOs after that time, but they will find other uses for us that "utilize our professional skills", then go on to mention UAVs and pilot (read: F-35) transitions. I'm hoping for the latter. If they try to make me a UAV guy, I'll try to just run out my career doing other stuff (FAC, Foreign Area Officer, Congressional liason work...)

^^^ Unfortunately I gave up stuff like FAO with my last pay-grade change I might try and go back to the dark side once I get some hours under my belt.

I haven't been to Afghanistan. Yet. Possibly MTF at a later date.

things are looking optimistic for me to get a month in Afghanistan on a swap with a Navy squadron while I'm deployed here in Iraq.

My pilot buddy who's trying to work this deal with me requested the 30 (or is it 31?) days because he actually cares (I don't think it's his primary motivation, but he does want the medal). I'm more concerned with whether we can score a couple of days layover in Qatar in transit.
