That's a pretty cool looking venue. At what stadium are they playing?
Nasty little foul on #25 Why are they booing the US training staff? The announcers said something along the lines of "You can hear the boos for the training staff. They're not very popular around here."

the pools are done by region
pool 1 - the seeded teams pool 2 - south america / africa pool 3 - european teams pool 4 - americas/asian
serbia and montenegro are picked to be in a group with only one european team (thus will be in brazil's, aregentina's, or mexico's group) so aren't in any pool. this is to ensure only two teams from europe max are in each group 12/9/2005 3:58:45 PM |

Ouchhhhhh. Our draw is awful. I really wanted to be in the group with France. The only group that is harder than ours is Group C with Argentina and Holland (who i think have a chance to win) 12/9/2005 4:10:51 PM |

Italy, Ghana, and the Czechs. Italy must be taking a look at what Spain and France got and be pissed!
It could have been worse, we could've drawn Group C (Argentina, Ivory Coast, Netherlands, who then got Serbia-Montenegro).
If we take 2nd in our group, there's a very good chance the USA would play Brazil in the round of 16.
^ Ghana are one of the best teams in Africa, they just never made it to the World Cup before as African qualifying is unforgiving. Michael Essien and Didier Drogba I think play for Ghana.
^^^ Dick Advocaat.

Group A: An almost perfect script for Germany. They and the Poles are odds on to advance. Ecuador has an outside shot, and the Ticos are D.O.A. in my eyes.
Group B: England has to feel as if they've caught a break. Sweden should follow out easily. No chance for T&T; Paraguay will challenge … barely.
Group C: Arguably one of two Groups of Death. You have to pick Argentina and Holland, but Ivory Coast — powered by Didier Drogba — will fight. And don't count out the Serbs. Every team here is quality.
Group D: Mexico and Portugal should cruise. Angola is a spoiler; Iran may sneak if Prtugal collapses…as they have in the past.
Group E: Wide open. Arguably the Group of Death. Surely a killer any way you slice it. The USA has never beat Italy (0-3-2 lifetime), losing twice in the World Cup. USA have never played the Czechs, but lost 5-1 in the opener of the 1990 games against the old Czechoslovakia. Ghana has never met the USA. Any team in this group can go through.
Group F: Brazil will get challenged, but should handle it with aplomb. Croatia and Australia have a good shot to go through. Japan has no shot as I see it on paper.
Group G: France should be re-surgent here. I see the Koreans flopping in the heat of Europe. The Swiss should edge Togo.
Group H: A half-baked mix. Spain has to be the favorite, though they have consistently underperformed. Don't count out the Ukraine or Tunisia. KSA is making up the numbers. 12/9/2005 4:33:28 PM |

is it just my own oversight, or does it look like there are very few spoiler possibilities this year?
i see ukraine taking spain, but just b/c spain is overrated this year. thats about it. id say croatia, but they drew brazil, so there goes that. 12/11/2005 2:13:33 PM |

I can see Ukraine taking Spain because Spain sucks on a yearly basis. Croatia has forwards that can pick apart the Brazilian defense, but lots of countries have that. The key to having a chance at Brazil is limiting them to a goal or two. 12/11/2005 3:05:12 PM |

Interesting matchups I've noticed on my study break (not necissarily b/c of the teams):
Germany vs. Poland (holy 1939!) The Netherlands vs. Argentina (could be a great game) Angola vs. Portugal (former colony, they fought a war in the 70s) Italy vs. USA (just because) Brazil vs. Croatia (could be the upset of the first round) France vs. Togo (former colony and all that jazz, France will win 16-0)
