I always liked Happy Holidays because it included New Years.

Your personal freedom to be a Christian and Celebrate Christmas is not affected by some Corporation saying "Happy Holidays". You can still go to church, buy presents, and celebrate the over commercialized holiday with everyone else. I can't believe the media is wasting news time with this.

Honestly, does it matter if the clerk says Merry Christmas to you as you are spending a fortune on presents that people don't really need (when you should be helping charities)? Isn't that kinda ironic to Christ's message? Sadly, too many people get off on being a Christian in name, but do not act like one in practice.

So -- many corporations are global.

Should we also expect that, for instance, if an American company has a store in China, that it should also well-wish Merry Christmas to its shoppers? As a form of evangelism or missionary work, perhaps?

I don't get this "War on Christmas" crusade because it's not an ideological war, it's just business. If we expect business to subvert itself to religious interests, where do we draw the line? Without a doubt, these businesses will espouse Muslim values -- at least superficially -- in Muslim countries.

Shall we then boycott because, for on the one hand they promote Christmas at home, and wholly ignore (or perhaps deride) it abroad where they are not "preaching to the choir," so to speak?

It's interesting because nobody really cares. News folks, religious leaders, etc.. are all trying to make it seem like this is serious business, but it isn't. Go find me a person who is offended by being wished a Merry Christmas or Happy Hannukah.

And by the way, folks, Ramadan or however you spell it, is not the type of holiday where you go around saying, "Happy Ramadan!" In fact, it's quite the opposite.

I can certainly see why a business would rather have a "Happy Holidays" mantra. It's one thing to talk about the South, and quite another to talk about New York City or California which are much more ethnically diverse.

More so, wishing non-Christian shoppers Merry Christmas may not offend, but it doesn't exactly incent them to buy, either. From the perspective of a business, they want all people to feel as though this is a general time of celebration, and therefore buying.

This is just a basic question of marketing. I doubt the businesses involved made the decision to use "Happy Holidays" arbitrarily.

Again, I have to ask: at what point did businesses become religious institutions, and shall we next expect them to espouse Christianity across the globe? Will it soon be appropriate for Target to install a church next to its in-store eateries, as a means of "cross-promotion?"

when I was young, my mom had this set of heirloom glasses that had "merry christmas" or "happy holidays" written on them. Before christmas, I always wanted to drink from the "merry christmas" glasses, but after christmas, I always wanted to drink from the "happy holidays" glasses because new years was coming up.

As a pretty devout Christian, I believe first and firstmost that Christmas is about Christ. While I may mind if a company or store goes out of their way to take Christ out of Christmas (Holiday trees are one example ), if the whole store put out "Happy Holidays", I probably wouldn't notice. If I did, I still wouldn't care.

People who get in a huff about seeing "Happy Holidays" alongside "Merry Christmas" should accept that Christmas is acknowledged. No need to go on some personal crusade to make it all or nothing.

Simply put, it's not a company's responsibility to promote Christmas. It's the church's. And if the church is losing influence in the community so much that the community is trying to be ambiguous towards Christmas, then the only people they should blame are themselves.
