I dont even think anyone is trying to say Rivers is the "golden boy"
He is a fucking hero to this school...because he was arguably one of the best college quarterbacks to play the game. Everyone just wants to see him playing. There is nothing wrong with that.

Dont' feed the trolls.
Phillip Rivers to NCSU fans IS a golden boy. Why shouldn't he be? He's the biggest name to come out of this school's football program - I don't get what is wrong with that.
Stop wasting bandwidth on this drivel. Bench or no, the nigga is getting paid where you are not. so go beat off.

Thread Summary
Goal of the thread
Call attention to the fact that P-Riv has a very good chance to remain a Charger next season.
Implication of that statement
Rivers & Bench in '06 looks like a strong candidate.
Statement that changed the course of the thread Quote : | "how bout you put your money where your mouth is, then, and post us the original contract, as well as what it actually offered" | aaronburro
Article Summary that I posted that sent aaronburro into scramble mode
Quote : | " To this point, the timing appears to be coincidental because the Chargers have stuck to their position that they won't go above the $40.5 million "base" contract Rivers rejected two weeks ago. Sources said Sexton presented the team with several proposals this week, each of which came down significantly from his previous asking price of $44 million in a base deal, but not enough to suit the Chargers.
The team refused to budge, sources said." |
Unintended Consequence of the thread
aaronburro came off looking like a chump.
Conclusion
Philip needs to work out hard this offseason and try to take Brees starting spot.

God I better do some clarification before something happens and this thread becomes 100 pages.
Before Brees injury I'd say there was like a 5-10% chance that both RIvers and Brees were in San Diego next year.
Now I'm saying I think its better than 50/50 that both are in San Diego next year.
I am not saying there is NO way Rivers will be starting next year.
I'm just saying Rivers & Bench in '06 has emerged from being a darkhorse to being one of the frontrunners.
Think of Rivers & Bench the way you thought of John Edwards in the Democratic Primaries the night the Panthers beat the Eagles in the NFC Championship. 1/2/2006 12:31:38 PM |

brees has officially tore his labrum...thats a major shoulder injury to his throwing arm...no chance now the chargers will trade rivers...however phil could easily be the starter next year 1/2/2006 3:27:37 PM |
Fuel All American 7016 Posts user info edit post |
Brees may not be re-signed. A torn labrum is what has effectively killed Chad Pennington's career. They are also not gonna sign him to a long-term contract when his future is up in the air and they ALREADY HAVE a QB signed for 4 more years.
So the options are:
1. Let Brees walk.
2. Franchise Brees.
My guess is that they let him walk. Football is a tough business. They need to use their cap space to sign some offensive linemen and DB's, not on a backup QB.
Here's what AJ Smith has to say:
Quote : | ""My goal is to build a championship team and protect it with depth," he said. "I don't know why the speculation is on Philip Rivers. Philip Rivers is under contract for six years. I think the attention should be on the future of Drew Brees." " |

okay yeah, torn labrum Brees is screwed.
Philip will be the starter in San Diego next year.
Tough luck for the Chargers... looks like not starting Rivers backfired BIG TIME.
They arent gonna get shit for Brees now...
I feel kinda bad for Brees too, he might never get a big deal now... 1/2/2006 7:26:15 PM |
Fuel All American 7016 Posts user info edit post |
My guess is that Brees will sign with some team like Buffalo, Cleveland, SF or Green Bay who has a young QB that may or may not pan out. Given the market, he could probably get a decent contract if he can pass a physical. The problem for the Chargers is that they can't even trade him or anything. And there's no way they'll pay as much as the teams I've listed.
This is actually gonna work out pretty well for Rivers. He's been practicing with that team and learning the offense for the last 2 years. Plug those holes in the line and give him another reciever, and he'll have the perfect situation to step into. 1/2/2006 7:31:58 PM |

Brees is a tough guy. If he goes through rehab and doesn't rush it, he could come back. Pennington screwed himself by playing through injury and then not letting it heal all the way after surgery. 1/2/2006 7:35:59 PM |

What would have been better for Rivers though is that they traded Brees for two first round picks...
they could def use another receiver, or lineman, or something... 1/3/2006 10:14:59 AM |

Rally, do you think that Eli and his family are a bunch of whiners as well??? (except for payton b/c i like his mastercard commercials)
oh and by the way if i am traded for the #1 pick i better be treated like one b/c that is basically saying that i am better than the #1 pick was...esp if the chargers got the better end of the deal 1/3/2006 12:19:42 PM |

^ yeah, i didnt like what Eli did at all.
However, he caught a lot of flack for it, while Rivers got off pretty easy for some reason.
I just like consistency with these things.

I'm sure you've already caught your error in this paragraph, so I wont waste much time/energy explaining why you are wrong.
Clearly, if the deal involves
Player A
for
Player B + a host of draft picks.
Then Player A is considered more valuable.
Player A, obviously being Eli and player B obviously being Rivers.1/3/2006 1:11:13 PM |

um, not necessarily. you could make the case that the giants just wanted eli so bad they overpayed for him. i think a better way to interpret KeB's post is to say "if the Chargers didnt know they could extort a great deal out of the giants for manning, then they would have picked Rivers instead"1/3/2006 2:08:58 PM |

Okay, you may have a point.
Let me put it this way.
100 out of 100 NFL analysts had Manning ranked higher than Rivers.
The Chargers had Manning ranked higher than Rivers.
The Giants had Manning ranked higher than Rivers.
Semantics be damned, Manning was rated higher than Rivers.
Manning went #1, RIvers went #4. That's all that matters when figuring out contract value.

ok i agree...however, and this doesnt really matter since its college vs nfl...but who would you say was a better college quarterback between rivers and manning?
like i said, that doesnt really matter...but you know what...until i see rivers' agent in his driveway spouting off a few dozen "Next Question"s, Rivers wont be near the arrogant team killing asshole that TO is
i bet you 100 out of 100 NFL analysts would rather have a player with Rivers' character and personality than TO's character and personality 1/3/2006 2:26:28 PM |

Better college QB?
I didnt watch Eli play nearly as much as Rivers.
Their senior year, RIvers was clearly better.
Over the course of four years, I'm not sure... I know Phil struggled a lot his soph/jr years and I dont really know how Eli did...

from what I've heard they wont sign Brees again. They have to decide by mid February if they are going to sign him again, and he won't be near recovery by then. Why take a gamble on like 10 million dollars on a QB who may or may not fully recover to be good again when you have a early first round draft QB waiting that has been learning the scheme for 2 years?
I do however realize Rivers is untested and that is somewhat of a gamble as well. 1/4/2006 7:15:28 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
they'd be fucking crazy to re-sign Brees now.
It makes absolutely no sense to sign a guy who may never be the same again when you already have a QB signed to a megadeal.
Sucks for SD, they coulda gotten a lot for Brees.
Sucks worse for Brees... he's never gonna see that $50 million deal. 1/4/2006 7:38:13 PM |
