2 runs in the 5th for the USA.
^^ Dontrelle Willis allowed 5 runs and 6 hits in 2 and 2/3 innings. Al Leiter allowed 2 runs and 3 hits in 2/3 of an inning. Gary Majewski has allowed 1 run and 3 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings and is still pitching.

Willis = overrated.
Leiter = should not be allowed anywhere near a mound ever
Canada will act like this is a bigger upset than our 1980 Olympic team.

bottom of the 9th
By the way, this could turn into Bud Selig's worst nightmare if the USA loses. Assume that Mexico and the USA defeat South Africa, and then Mexico defeat Canada. You'd have the following:
Mexico, Canada, USA 2-1 South Africa 0-3
Top two go to next round. Tiebreakers include ERA and batting average. Selig needs the event to be a success and that means at the least a deep run by the USA.
Plus, he has Barry Bonds. 3/8/2006 7:08:17 PM |

It's not like it's over. They SHOULD hold the tiebreaker over Mexico and SA if they win tomorrow..
I can't imagine head to head doesn't factor in to the tiebreaker...
The team that defeated the other tied team head-to-head in a given Round shall be ranked higher in the pool standings for such Round. The tied teams shall be ranked in the standings for that Round according to fewest runs allowed divided by the number of innings (including partial innings) played in defense in the games in that Round between the teams tied. The tied teams shall be ranked in the standings according to fewest earned runs allowed divided by the number of innings (including partial innings) played in defense in the games in that Round between the teams tied. The tied teams shall be ranked in the standings according to highest batting average in games in that Round between the teams tied. Standings shall be determined by the drawing of lots, conducted by WBCI.
** There ya go. If we win tomorrow we are in the 2nd round.. no question.

Its the Curse of PayRod.
When A-Rod played for Seattle they were on the cusp, the year he left Seattle had the best record in the majors. With Texas the Rangers were horrible, the year he left they climbed out of the cellar. With the Yankees they allowed the single greatest comeback in series playoff history in any sport. The Yankees have struggled in the playoffs since getting A-Rod. Spurning the DR he plays for the US who lose to Canada. 3/8/2006 7:17:09 PM |

What I was talking about is a possibility.
Assume for a second Mexico beats South Africa tonight and USA beats South Africa Friday. That should happen, S.A. plays cricket. So the standings would be:
Canada 2-0 USA 2-1 Mexico 1-1 S. Africa 0-3
with the Canada-Mexico game remaining. Assume Mexico beats Canada. Your standings would look like this, with the head-to-head for the tied teams in parentheses next to the record
Canada 2-1 (1-1) Mexico 2-1 (1-1) USA 2-1 (1-1) S. Africa 0-3
Sorry, I've watched enough World Cups in soccer and seen enough teams get left out by tiebreakers.3/8/2006 7:21:09 PM |

I think it’s ridiculous that the US couldn’t hit a bunch of minor league baseball pitchers. I know people give the argument of anyone can win one game, but that’s crap. The US players came into this event unprepared and it is showing.
Now the US faces a South African team that was beating this Canada team in the ninth inning. These games shouldn’t even be close in this pool play, but the US so far has been an embarrassment. These players knew this thing was coming and could of prepared better, but they didn’t.
Congrats to team USA for getting dominated by a 21 year old pitcher from the CLASS A Carolina league. Adam Loewen had a tougher time pitching against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. 3/8/2006 7:47:14 PM |
Flyin Ryan All American 8224 Posts user info edit post |
The teams that the pitchers the USA faced today played for:
Adam Loewen - Frederick Keys (A, Balitmore Orioles) Chris Begg - Connecticut Defenders (AA, San Francisco Giants) Eric Cyr - Uni-President Lions (Taiwan - Chinese Professional Baseball League) Scott Mathieson - Philadelphia Phillies Steve Green - Toledo Mud Hens (AAA, Detroit Tigers)
Stubby Clapp though, that's one heck of a name. 3/8/2006 8:00:02 PM |

Loewen's a stud. He was at a tourney a few years ago at the same time as me. Scott Kazmir was on his team, I believe. Talk about two studs on one team. 3/8/2006 8:12:43 PM |

(tie breaker order is 1) head to head; 2) run/9; 3) ERA)
** this assumes USA wins tomorrow
South Africa CAN NOT finish ahead of us if we win. They are a non factor.
If Mexico wins tonight and tomorrow we are all 2-1 thus head to head is gone. So look at R/9. As it stands Canada is at 7, US at 4.00, Mexico at 2.25. Therefore we would have to win a high scoring game and Canada would have to lose a low scoring game (chances of this happening or slim).
If Canada wins tomorrow we automatically are in next round too... 3/8/2006 8:13:52 PM |

Mexico killed Canada, so as long as the USA win tomorrow, they advance to the next round and Canada are eliminated.
The next group stage is also pretty setup:
Pool 1 in Anaheim-South Korea, Japan, Mexico, USA/Canada Pool 2 in San Juan-Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Venezuela
That San Juan pool looks loaded. 3/9/2006 11:37:55 PM |
