The rescue I foster through is run through a vet's office so if the pup needs it I can take it in without notice/apptment. It's so convenient. Tomorrow we're going to the Chatham Co. shelter to pull dogs since we finally got homes for a few all at once. It's apparently a really slow adoption time, but during a time when lots of animals are reproducing.

A pregnant dog the rescue pulled just had 11 babies this morning. Yes freakin ELEVEN. She's a terrier mix that couldn't be more than like 30lbs normally. So you'll see a thread from me in around 8 weeks trying to help find homes for those

That's too bad. It's seemed most difficult to place black lab mix puppies, especially males. But we can't help but keep pulling them when they have the most adorable faces and personalities.

if you had to pick a dog to kill, wouldn't you want it to be the pregnant one, so you wouldn't have to deal with finding a home for a dozen dogs instead of just one?

Would you want to live with putting a pregnant dog down when she's about to give birth to a litter of puppies? I'm talking only a week after she was rescued. In this case, that's 12 dogs that would have been put down if she had stayed at the facility.

Besides, rescues don't look at it that way. If it takes forever to help a dog it might get a little frustrating, but there's always an option, whether it's adopting the dog ourselves or it takes a year to place it. If it's adoption, it's because we fall in love with the dog (or cat if that's the case). The vet also keeps some "unadoptable" dogs because we just realize they won't get adopted, or they have too many physical problems and he wants to harbor them. They include a 3-legged shepherd, a beautiful golden retriever/border collie mix who had worms so badly when younger that her organs are really messed up, and a boston terrier that was bred way too often for her own good at a puppy mill.

Plus, we look at those that we know we could get adopted out, but that still need a little help. For example, we gave up a boxer and picked up a lab mix puppy. The boxer at that shelter should have no trouble getting a new home compared to the lab mix, which will just take a little while for us to find a home for. We passed up a corgi mix and picked up a pit bull one because we know pit bulls have a pre-existing attitude toward them, while the corgi mix was adorable and very personable. Sure the pit bull was too, but some people may not look twice at her.

This pregnant terrier mix's puppies will probably find homes pretty quickly as it stands now, versus being born in a facility, with some of them dying, and lesser chance of being seen for adoption.

i tend to pull adoptable puppies when i'm there. its hard to pick and choose which ones you're gonna save... take them with you and leave the rest staring at you. i get emails from this shelter and i know which dogs get pts and which ones are rescued.
i picked a yellow lab pup and a golden mix pup over a bunch of hound mixes a few weeks ago... because they are easier to place, moreso in Raleigh at least. dont get me wrong - i love hounds but they're more popular in the "country". you also have to sometime pass up the more feral dogs. unless they are real young - like 8-12 wks, it can be a risk. you never know if they'll trust humans enough and become a good companion, nontheless a family dog.

its true that black lab mixes are one of , if not the, most common dog you see in shelters round here. every other person has a black lab mix (with a splash of white on the chest). i have one. he was abused and i rescued him.

rescues ALWAYS pull pregnant dogs.

Yeah I hate that about hounds. I love them, but like you said not too many city people do. There was an awesome bluetick hound at Chatham and he was sooooo sweet. But we couldn't take him because we're having a heck of a time finding homes for the hounds we currently have. It makes me want a large house with a huge fenced yard and the ability to take in several. Unfortunately that would drive my husband crazy.

franklin county is full again
they are putting all Urgents to sleep Thursday at 10am (i get emails from the shelter)
this includes all owner surrenders and dogs that have been there for more than 3 days

theres like 30+ dogs and puppes. tons of puppies.
and a bunch of cats and kittens.

Yeah I'm checking with my rescue about the cocker spaniel since as a purebred it may be easy to place him. I advertised the mastiff in Classifieds b/c I like him and wish I could take him out of there.

i rescued the mastif/rot mix. his name is Charlie. and he's super sweet. very skinny.
someone is coming today to see him and hopefully take him

i pulled the 4 yellow lab mix pups.
2 girls
2 boys
they look like a yellow lab crossed with a basset. really short legs, long body.
one female has long hair. looks like a golden ret mix. super sweet and playful
the other female is the runt. little shy at first but very loving.
one male has droopy basset like ears. calmest of them all and likes to be in your lap.
other male has goofy ears that stick up (basenji like) and white markings. he's the most playful

if you're interested in one of the puppies pm me and you can come by and see them.

he's about 2-3 yrs old (what the vet said from looking at his teeth), pretty skinny, intact, no idea if he's ever had any vaccines.
beautiful red coat.
i'd guess around 80 lbs. could put on another 20 and look great!

he was pretty calm and nice when i had him here. was a little overwhelmed by the puppies.
he walked very nice on a leash and knew sit. (didnt check for other commands)

Hey, I work at a no-kill shelter called S.A.F.E. Haven for cats up in North Raleigh, and I was just wondering if anyone knows of a dog shelter like this? All the cats are kept until adopted, and it has a low/no cost spay/neuter clinic for the public...but no cats are put down. I didn't know if there was a similar place like that for puppies around here.

Basically the rescue organizations around here. Most animals in the rescues are likely fostered but they typically have kennels as well that extra unfostered animals stay in. The org. I'm with, Sound Pet, is run out of a vet and they use the kennels there for the rescued dogs that aren't in foster care at the moment. No animal rescued by these organizations are going to be put down. Even those they find are in poor health will at least be harbored by some sort of hospice or, in our case those live in the vet office as pets of the vet and staff.

I don't think cats are as well taken care of like that. S.A.F.E. haven is the first one in the triad, and a few people have been starting some others, but people don't seem to like cats as much. That's good for puppies though. I understand why they have to put them down, I mean, you can only work with what you have, but it's still awful. Most of the people at our shelter have taken in at least one cat, some several, and those who don't foster them. We have had to put a few down because of being hurt too badly to survive, but if it can live, we find them homes. We had one cat that had some super expensive surgery thing because it had an unusual condition called pectus excavatum, and because of him, they started a fund called the Razzmatazz fund (his name) for other cats. It makes me happy when people take care of animals. I wish I could take them all. I wish my apartment allowed furry creatures.

Yeah I wish I had a place large enough to take care of more than one foster at a time. Palisades Animal Rescue is based in Cary and is a cat/kitten rescue organization. They have over 50 cats and kittens right now, and like I said rescues won't put the animals down for no good reason (and that would have to be some terminal illness causing massive pain or something like that).

I mention dogs all the time, but Sound Pet also does cats, just doesn't seem as focused on them because they do take longer to adopt out than the dogs. There are just too many people who don't fix their cats, and when the cats have kittens, they don't want to deal with them. My parents' neighbors have cats they claim to own, but don't do anything with them, so they continue to breed. My dad has the animal control trap them and take them away. In my last apt neighborhood the neighbor up the street had a cat that gave birth to kittens. They kept the mama cat inside so she couldn't round up the kittens. I had to gather the kittens and find homes for them.

We have people that go out and trap feral cats to spay and neuter, but you have to let them go b/c they are wild. If they have kittens, we keep them until they are old enough to be spayed/neutered and adopt them out, but otherwise, they are released. We don't adopt out cats unless they are spayed/neutered.

once again its free to get an animal from here.
most animals are put to sleep within a few days if not rescued.

Ahh I can't read anymore because otherwise I'll be sobbing at work...

my best friend's 6-month old puppy was hit by a car this weekend in front of my mom and dad's house where we would take all of our dogs so they can run (we have a lot of land out there), and I've been ABSOLUTELY crushed all week. She wasn't MY puppy, but he adopted her through my sister when someone found her about 8 weeks old on a construction site and I've seen her nearly every day since....

I didn't say any of this to depress anyone, but the only positive I can see to this situation is that surprising Cole (my buddy) said he's going to want another rescue puppy in the future so at least he'll be saving 1 more.

Good luck, and as soon as I get a bigger place, I'll be fostering pets like a crazy person.

So get this craziness:

I've been in contact with two women in Goldsboro about the abandoned dogs that elkaybie linked from craigslist above. I've been planning to take the smallest one, the dog pictured last in that post, and was going to pick him up tomorrow from a vet in Wilson that was offering at-cost neutering.

The other larger dogs, 3 of them, started picking on him, so someone that had stopped to check on them let him out of the fenced area. Well, duh, he ran off. So they've been searching like crazy for him, and finally have located him. A redneck has him chained to a tree in his backyard.

The main woman I've been talking with said this guy was walking around in his socks outside next-door to where the dogs are located, drinking a beer out of a paper bag. The toothless ignorant hick told her where the dog was only after she had to ask a bunch of specific questions that finally led to that answer. She told him the dog has a neuter appt tomorrow morning and the guy said that the dog's chained to a tree, so he doesn't need to be neutered. She explained he does need it for health benefits, and he was like, "so should I get neutered for my health?" She of course wanted to answer with a resounding "yes!" but restrained herself. She then told him that the dog needs to be treated for heartworms, or else he will die (true). The guy argued that his grandparents' dogs when he was like 5 yrs old lived to an old age without any of the medical stuff (meaning vaccines, heartworm/flea prevention, etc). I swear I want to kick him.

She didn't want to stick around much longer since he was half-drunk and she had her kids with her, so she is planning to talk to an attorney that they've been working with. Because 1) There is no "free dog" sign or anything around the property, and 2) the guy who can't keep the dogs is still the technical owner. But the hick was so adament that she thinks they may have to resort to having the dog taken away rather than having it result in the guy giving the dog up. Fortunately the previous dog owner knows the hick's boss, so hopefully they can find out where he lives so they can get the dog away from him. Oh and the hick had said the previous owner said he could have the dog, and the owner said it's completely untrue.

Argh!! Stupid hick. Now I'm all worried that the dog won't be fed or get water like he should, and he's now that much further delayed from getting heartworm prevention, and treatment in the near future.

I went last Sat to the pet adoption day at Petsmart. I talked with a few of the Lake Norman rescue workers. After I left, I'm convinced that I'm going to fence in my backyard and then rescue two dogs. I'm hoping that after I get the fence, they can find a pair of labs that can't be separated.

I can't do the cage thing. I grew up on a farm and have never had to cage up a dog. Well, the last lab we got was an adult that had been fenced in so we had to cage him up when we weren't at home for about 2 months
