yeah, well i guess thats why 4000 artists (some dead.....) think they need their copyright protections extended to 95 years from the current (already ridiculous) 50. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=421080&in_page_id=1773&ito=1490 12/8/2006 10:29:19 PM |

RIAA showing its true colors here...turns out they could care less about artist payback, but just want the record labels to make bank no matter what:

Putting Our Money Where Our Mouths Are: Boycott the RIAA in March http://tinyurl.com/3yuwlh

We want to get the word out to as many people as humanly possible that we can all send a message by refusing to buy any album put out by an RIAA label. Am I saying you should start pirating music? Not at all. You can continue to support the artists you enjoy and respect in a number of ways." |

They could just probably send the letter to every man, woman, and child and see who pays up and just ignore the rest.

so this is a longshot..
but a friend of a friend (friend told me regarding their friend) that she is being sued for illegal downloading of music (she goes to State). Apparently they are suing her for $750 per song she's downloaded, which of course is several hundred (probably 500 songs). Thats like $350,000!? What is the best way to combat this? Again, no skin off my nose, but trying to help someone out. Not trying to condone illegal music or anything, but wondering from an individual standpoint how for her to not be owned by the RIAA. 3/1/2007 11:14:03 AM |

are they still only catching people uploading, or can they catch you for just downloading a song now? if the latter, how do they know how many songs she DL'd (assuming they only caught her DLing 1 or 2 songs), unless the courts allowed them to seize her hard drive? even then, how would they prove that none of those songs were legal copies?3/25/2007 10:03:07 AM |

"It's not the university's role to, in effect, serve papers on our students for another party," John Diamond, spokesman for the university system, said of the decision.
...
The RIAA sent the system only the numerical Internet addresses of students the industry has accused of copyright violations. They asked the UMS to provide the names of those students.
Diamond said the RIAA's request for student information asks the system to violate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which bars the UMS from divulging information not considered public.
The Internet addresses the university assigns to students accessing the network is not public. Despite this, some institutions have given up their students' names to avoid court fees.
...
"The only way the RIAA can get that information is if the RIAA takes us to court to get those names," Diamond said.
...
Ippolito said the practice of subpoenaing universities won't necessarily hold water in court, and was critical of the RIAA's newest tactics with colleges, a policy he called "mafia-like."
"They want to bully universities into exposing students and also bully students directly into signing onto a discount," Ippolito said. "There's no legal process and that's the end of the story."
According to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, a 1998 bill meant to protect copyrighted material in the digital age, the university is not responsible for copyright violations on its network. The university system needs only to make sure students delete any copyrighted works found by an outside agency such as the RIAA." |

So while other universities are not selling their students out to the RIAA, NC State is apparently complying in full? Not that I would have expected anything less. 3/28/2007 5:15:34 AM |
clevow Veteran 456 Posts user info edit post |
actually, we're not.
we are forwarding the information to the students. we have not and will not give ANY information to the RIAA until we are ordered to by the courts.
we have been in email correspondence with the RIAA as well, and have told them essentially that they are becoming burdensome. however, the law requires us to forward their notices, so we do.
we try to keep our network open. if we went the way of many other schools and just banned p2p at the network level, we wouldn't have these problems. but we recognize there are many legit uses of p2p, so we let it go. 3/28/2007 6:56:27 AM |

Holy Shit! I just read that letter. It's the legal equilivent of slapping your wang on the table. Bascily, the letter said that the RIAA's lawyer had so little eviedence that after the defendant spent the 30 seconds it would take to clear his name beyound a shadow of a doubt that they would see the RIAA's lawyers held legally accountable for malicious procecution. The lawyers interspersed the letter with lots of additional barbs and shit-talking. It's great. The guy who wrote that has balls that are big, shiny, and brass. He called the RIAA on all the bullshit they try to pull and promised them that it would cost them millions if the tried to continue their case against his client.3/28/2007 3:08:43 PM |
