Dean Smith had consistently awesome talent. He'd win ACC Championships, but he was an NCAA underacheiver.


His only two titles were from the other team making a critical mistake.



He developed a lot of NBA players and was a perennial top 10 team, but I seriously think with recruiting as national as it is today and Royboy finally getting the "hump"... he'll win 3-4 more before he retires (At least if he can keep players around)

I cant totally support getting rid of him because I'm afraid we would get stuck with some shit coach. I would rather he come out and say "i'm not giving up on the team so I'm changing offenses" (as I posted last night) rather than get rid of him. All I want is a change. That was a good read though.

Facts? Roy is eleventy years younger than Dean and has half as many titles.


Dean was in a few Final Fours before he ever won one...so was Roy.


UNC recruits players that even Kansas can't get.


We'll have to wait and see to judge this one. My guess is that Roy wins plenty more while at UNC....and not becuase someone passed the ball to the wrong team or called a timeout they didn't have

I fail to see how that is a knock. If you are getting to the final four regularly, that means you are an elite coach and you will eventually win one or two.

Speaking of banners, we should totally hang one for that.

The arguments made in favor of Sendek here are laughable. You can make an argument for him being the guy long-term - it isn't a great argument, but not ridiculous either. But just saying "we've been to 5 straight NCAA tournaments!!!!!" shows you don't get it.

I'm not a Herb fan, but I'm afraid that getting rid of Herb would be similar to Nebraska firing Frank Solich because he was "only" 9-3 in football. How has that worked out for them since then? It took them about 3 months to get Bill Callahan to come in (because everybody else turned them down), and they're in a downswing right now. Admittedly, part of that is because they're bringing in an entirely new offense, so it'll really take a few years to see the final result.

That being said, Tudor is right in that our goal needs to be to have the best program in the country. I think Herb has done a FANTASTIC job in the progress our program has made in the last 10 years since the Les Robinson days. But I don't think Herb is the guy who can get us a national championship. He's "fixed" the program, but he's not going to get us any farther.
