They didn't send us many, so I'm still figuring out what I want to do with them. We do have a shitload of buttons and temporary tattoos, though. I think the posters are all gone. 7/15/2006 5:56:11 PM |

I'm assuming the customers have brought their own.
I was really hoping for the big reveal to be that D doesn't do anything, a la Supercool in UCB. I mean, everybody in the film is so fucked up on other stuff...it wasn't an impossible outcome. 7/15/2006 7:44:56 PM |

I thought this movie was great. Hilarious at points. Didn't think it was too confusing, but I can see why some would think so.

I'm sure there are plenty of posters or whatever I might be able to get a hold of for you. 7/16/2006 8:20:34 AM |

No, silly, you say "omg i am NEVER doing drugs again" after things like Requiem for a Dream.
D was actually kinda lame. The withdrawal looked much worse than being on the drug.
Anyway, this isn't my favorite Linklater movie by any means, but it was decent enough. 7/17/2006 11:23:18 PM |

it was a pretty ok movie, a little trippy.
I would definitely go see it. 7/18/2006 10:18:50 AM |
Stein All American 19842 Posts user info edit post |
It was only "trippy" because it was rotoscoped.
It's the old "use gimmick visuals to make up for a lack of depth" trick that filmmakers are so popular of. 7/18/2006 10:33:29 AM |

sure 7/18/2006 10:35:34 AM |
Stein All American 19842 Posts user info edit post |
Then do tell, what exactly was trippy?
The complete lack of emotional investment in the well-being of the characters?
The complete lack of common sense by the protagonist?
Or the fact that everyone was just seeing shit? 7/18/2006 10:43:50 AM |

I think the trailer is very misleading. Also while watch this, it seemed like there were a lot of scenes that had a false sense of importance placed on them, but they weren't significant at all. I think if you just take it for a drug movie, it's great. 7/20/2006 10:50:55 AM |
SandSanta All American 22435 Posts user info edit post |

No, a great drug movie is Requiem for a Dream. A Scanner Darkly is a shitty drug movie because at no point do you feel any kind of connection to any of the characters, which is pretty integral to the genre.
Then again, you're never going to get good results in a movie where: A) It hinges around a drug they never tell you much at all about (Oh no! It's D!!!1) B) Relies on uninteresting characters C) Doesn't go anywhere

Not every film has to be a character-driven story. As with many of Linklater's films, the real story is the society, the interactions between characters, and not the characters themselves. That may not interest everybody. It's interesting to me. 7/20/2006 12:29:24 PM |
mrlebowski All American 9310 Posts user info edit post |
I thought it was very average. The long diatribes get old fast when there's really no substance to the plot. Just alot of talking just to sound deep. 7/20/2006 1:05:01 PM |

The movie only gives passive references to how society is affected, while at the same time showing a world which seems be exactly the same. They talk about how D is this massive problem and yet the only real time they show that society has changed is when they nab the guy off the streets. Otherwise, it seems to be business as usual.
And I fail to see how you can say the real story is the interaction between characters, when all of the characters are amazingly one dimensional.7/20/2006 1:41:09 PM |

this movie was great
4.5 / 5 stars
tons of twists -- lots of humor
good message, no preaching
Quote : | "A) It hinges around a drug they never tell you much at all about (Oh no! It's D!!!1) B) Relies on uninteresting characters C) Doesn't go anywhere " |
a. we know a hit ton about D, we know how it damages the brain, we know what it does, and where it comes from, and how addictive it is, who funds it, how many people are effected. maybe you just have no memory
b. all characters are highly complex
c. there are twists, and plenty of progress and paradigm shifts
