Last time I checked NYC was pretty damn safe compared to plenty of places in the south.
More murders occur per 100,000 ppl in Charleston, SC than they do in NYC.
Regarding this thread, all in all it just depends who you meet, and nothing more.4/19/2006 1:51:26 PM |

Yeah the murder rate in NY has really gone down in the last decade or so. It is actually much safer than a lot of cities.
Funny thing is I know some New Yorkers that dislike that fact, because they like to pretend that they are "New York tough guys" and their city is soooo much harder and more dangerous to live than other places. 4/19/2006 1:58:17 PM |

Raleigh is not a very typical southern town. There are three universities nearby with a population of folks from all over. Ask someone from somewhere else in the state and they will tell you that is is much different here than else where. I find in smaller towns in general people are kinder, and since the south is more rural it has the reputation of being more hospitable. 4/19/2006 7:48:34 PM |

well southerners are actually extremely friendly...
unless you're gay or black or mexican or rich or intelligent or unholy or alive. Then they are not. But as they're lynching you for being something they're not, they will ask if you liked the sweet tea and enjoyed the dolly parton singalong. 4/19/2006 8:11:24 PM |

i'm in indiana right now. a ordered a bagel in the campus library the other day. the lady said i was the first person who'd ever said "please" to her when ordering. i told her i was from the south and she understood.
that might not all be regional, though; it might be generational too. the up and coming crop of kids has a sense of entitlement like a mofo. 4/19/2006 9:10:04 PM |

You insult southern customs when you're already conforming in the south, set yourself up for checkmate there. 4/19/2006 9:13:36 PM |
