I hope we don't throw this kind of money at this guy. It would just look dumb to throw a lot of money at a guy who has sucked in his last two jobs.

well one of those jobs was the NBA, which doesn't mean shit.

if anything, the fact that he held a NBA HC position for almost 4 years is a positive.

what it comes down to is that NCSU officials know more than we do for the most part.

they are going to end up picking someone who at least part of the fanbase will disagree with, but hopefully support. that support will begin to crumble with the first NCAA tournament miss. eventually the coach will be forced out for another "worthy" coach.

rinse and repeat.

I just cant get excited about this guy, regardless of the "accomplishments" and recognition he may have. We need someone that can generate excitement about the program and pull the fanbase back together. Barnes and Calipari may have been the only guys that could have done that, but I think any of the other names that have been mentioned would get much better support than Kruger will. This fanbase has been divided for too fucking long, and even though I liked Herb I felt that at least his leaving would lead to us having a coach that everyone could get behind (at least for a few years hopefully), but if we do get this guy I cant imagine us making it to the end of the season without the Fire Kruger crowd as big or bigger than the Fire Herb crowd.

any coaches we get with more "personality" will be from small conferences or will be extremely unproven.

he's at least a safe hire, and at best one that could win us the ACC sometime.

some of you people act like Jay Wright is still going to come through that door for 2mil. he's not, and this is the best we can do.

^^Then you should say that it means something he actually got hired. Because staying there for a certain number of years means that the organization was dumb for keeping him because he sucked.

I hope people remember that if there was one team that made a huge backlash about not deserving to the be in the tournament this year it was Air Force. So many anaylist and reports were against the Air Force entry that they would have welcomed another MVC team in.

I dunno if you were saying that Marshal ONLY won that shitty conference, but he also took them to the tourney 6 times. For those keeping track, that's 6 times to the NCAA out of eight years at fucking Winthrop.

"Marshall has a 165-78 record at Winthrop, with six Big South championships and six trips to the NCAA tournament."

Anyways, his "success" at K State, Florida, and Illinois are all mediocre because he didn't improve on what they'd been doing at the time.

Actually, has he ever improved a program? Seems like he just continues what was there. Great.

So now we're getting a guy who reported makes Sendek look like Dickie V AND his biggest legacy is maintaining mediocrity for over 20 years.

Here are the teams in the Big South:

Winthrop
Liberty
High Point
Charleston Southern
Birmingham Southern
Coastal Carolina
VMI
UNC-Asheville
Radford

Congratu-fucking-lations for being the best coach in that shitty ass conference. He's been there for 8 years, and with that record, why the fuck has he not been pulled up to a better team???

Which would you rather have:

A)An young, inexperienced coach(in terms of ACC caliber coaching) who is a proven winner?

B)An old, very experienced coach(in terms of ACC caliber coaching) whos is proven to be a mediocre winner.

I'm much more certain of what we'll get if we hire Kruger. Who knows what we'll get if we hire one of the younger coaches? Let's roll the dice and be either good or bad rather than hire a ".500" guy.

conference tourny winner = ncaa bid

my point was that he didn't get 6 at-large bids, he got 6 automatic bids by winning the Big South.

i still like the guy's potential, but you have to look at the real reason he made the tournament 6 times.

and as far as kruger goes... the longer we go with no other sources reporting this, the more i think that this was bullshit. hopefully it was and we get a haith/lowery/marshall hired asap.

when every other school's AD said their coach was staying, NOBODY believed them.

now, all of a sudden everyone believes one sentence Hamrick said?

there is nothing in that article saying kruger isn't coming other than the UNLV AD subtly bashing fowler for not talking to him first.

He's not a fucking .500 guy. He's made an Elite 8 and a Final 4 and was hired to coach in the NBA. I'm not head over heels for this guy but he's proven that he's a pretty damn good coach. Good lord...you guys must have thought Herb Sendek was fucking Larry Shyatt.

And I'd rather not role the dice. We've established ourselves as a top-25 program. No reason to roll the dice on a coach from the Big Fucking South. At least hire a mid-major from MVC or something. Geez.

[quote]New names surfacing

In recent days, several new names have surfaced as potential candidates for the job. That list of new prospects may be headlined by UNLV’s Lon Kruger. Kruger was once thought to be a prime candidate for the job at Arizona State, where his son, Kevin, led the Sun Devils in scoring last season. But when former N.C. State coach Herb Sendek accepted that position earlier this month, Kruger stayed put in Las Vegas.

The Runnin’ Rebels coach certainly isn’t low on college experience, having been a head coach for 20 seasons at five universities. But for Wolfpack fans hoping their new coach brings more charisma and ambition to the table than Sendek, Kruger would not fit the bill.

While he has been to the Final Four, taking Florida there in 1994, he has notched only seven NCAA tournament wins in his other 19 seasons on the college level. In four seasons at Illinois, Kruger averaged 20 wins but never reached the Sweet 16.

He later compiled a 69-122 record in two-plus seasons as the coach of the Atlanta Hawks and since returning to the college ranks in 2004, he has a record of 34-27 at UNLV."

i'm less than enthused...
while he would be a decent coaching hire, he wouldn't be an improvement over Sendek...
of course, maybe Fowler just wants to make the anti-sendek folks eat it for all their complaining... it's not like he can't point to them as a big reason he couldn't get a better coach...

Over his career, he is essentially a .500 guy with a few surprise years that are from riding the coattails of the previous coach.

Iona: Jimmy V
Army: Coach K
Siena: Paul Hewitt
Providence: Rick Barnes
App State: Cremmins
Davidson: Terry Holland
Davidson: Lefty Driesell
Northeastern: Jim Calhoun
Army: Bob Knight
Southwest Missouri St: Steve Alford
BostonU/Providence: Rick Pitino
Tulsa: Tubby Smith
Western Kentucky: Gene Keady
Marshall: Billy Donovan
Oral Roberts/Tulsa: Bill Self

You et the picture... Most coaches were unknowns before being hired by big programs. The only high profile coaches hired in recent ACC history are ROy Williams and Gary WIlliams, both returning to their alma maters.

I'd shit my pants if we were able to pull Coach Kentucky from Western Kentucky....

But seriously...I see your point. But every single coach has to start at a small coach. So I could make a list of a lot of shitty coaches that did well at really small schools too and it would be just as big as your list.

Bottom line is that you're still rolling the dice. In our position, we shouldn't have to roll the dice...but it looks like we are. But being in this conference, you can't afford to take a chance and have it fail big time. It took us 10 years to climb out of the cellar that Les left us in. I don't want to have to go through that shit again.
