NCSUWolfy, one you find out the type of tattoo you want, I'd find an artist in the area skilled at that style and come up with something great together. They can advise you best on placement as long as you have a general idea.

im thinking of getting an outline of a sun but I can't decide where..either on my hip (but I heard that hurts a lot) or on my lower back but on the left side (I have back dimples so possibly to the left of one of them)

what would you guys suggest?

Sugarush4u - what about on one side of your lower stomach? Anytime you tattoo on muscle or bone it will hurt. Hips are moderate, Ribs are much much worse. If you have a problem with pain, definitely go for a fleshier spot such as the stomach or lower back.

i've heard, depending on the tattoo/how your body is, lower back tattoos can be pretty painful.

It's needles going into your skin. IT'S GOING TO HURT NO MATTER WHERE YOU GET IT. Don't let pain dictate where you get it, get it where you think it'll look good.

Foot and hand tattoos seem to often be the worse for wear (especially hands). The skin there moves a lot, sees a lot more exposure to the sun than other places, and feet and ankles get rubbed by shoes and socks.

A big guy named Mike over at Dogstar did the crab on my back. I got the ink on my arm from NY Adorned in Manhattan. I would totally recommend Dogstar because of how cool the location and feel of the place is (being right there in the heart of Ninth Street in Durham). They play interesting music from time to time and they have that "on display" front room where you can have the blinds up while getting ink and people can see as they walk down the street (or you can go into one of the private back rooms). As a guess, they might be a touch higher than other places (like Warlocks or something) in Raleigh, but I could be wrong. I think its a quality place, but not quite as quality as the top-dollar NY Adorned.

I, personally, think that would be great placement, Sugarush4u. But, I'll warn you, ribs are incredibly painful. I love the feeling of getting tattooed and it was rough for me.

Do any of you have tatoos on your feet? (Top or Bottom)

I've been thinking about an NCSU Block S on my foot, but I don't know if it'd be cool or lame. Thoughts?

The problem with getting a tat on the top your foot is wear and tear. They tend not to be a sharp and will fade more than a tattoo somewhere else on your body. It takes two weeks for the skin to fully heal and you cannot walk around bare foot for two weeks. Then after it heals, the friction from your shoes and socks also works on the tattoo. Not that you shouldn't get one on your foot. Just FYI.

Tattooing the bottoms of your feet and palms of your hand is generally problematic because the skin is different. Check online about it.

do NOT get a tattoo that takes up your entire upper body and requires torso-long straight lines along your chest and abs.

just trust me.

^^ I wear flops every day of my life and did throughout the healing process - my tats look just as bright as they did the day I got them done - but considering I don't wear shoes, thats probably why - I've noticed that my wedding band faded more than anything and so did one on my wrist, but not my feet

ok, so mine is feeling like puffy paint. Is that normal?

And mine is not picked off a wall or anything. I came up with the idea myself.... and there's no way I'm going to get some huge ass tattoo as my first.

mine were flash that i searched and found online and then customized a bit to something i liked. i had a few ideas, but am not a good enough artist to get what i wanted from it. ronny being that guy is nothing new though.

Actually, palm tattoos are something I've been meaning to look into, but just haven't yet (lack of money = lack of motivation)

Do tattoos on the pad at the base of the thumb/palm/right above the wrist fade as quickly as palm tattoos in the center of the palm? Is there a commonly accepted, surefire way to get a lasting, clear palm tattoo?

Don't ever get one on the palm of your hands. That is a big waste of money. I think it would be the coolest idea ever if it did not fade in like a month. One of the guys at the tattoo place I go to did this. He got "ambition" on his fingers at the beginning May of this year and when I went to get my last tatt done in mid June there was nothing there. Luckily he got his for free. I saw the pics and it was a pretty cool looking tatt. You would not believe how quickly the skin on the palm of your hands shed.
A girl came in to get a "w" on her finger and those guys would not do it.

is there a term to describe a tattoo that is created by shading/coloring the area around the subject, leaving bare skin as the "image"?

i'm currently trying to figure out what i want for my next tattoo...dont really have too many ideas other than a coat of arms...the guy that did my first one told me i had to get something in color for my next one...tried a few sites, but nothing so far....probably going to get it on my left arm(got one on my right arm...trying to keep it symmetrical for now)

^^ the "image" would be in negative space. it's not a term specific to tattoos, but just something used in art.
