The Llaneses Stay in Mexicali

By June Kronholz in Washington and John Lyons in Mexicali, Mexico, The Wall Street Journal, 1757 words
Apr 28, 2006

Unusual for their generation, Ms. [Osvaldo Llanes] and her husband have themselves risen to the middle class, thanks to jobs at a bank. "We've struggled," says Ms. Llanes. "But through it all, it never occurred to us to go to the U.S." "

You didn't ask for a multicultural society that was enlightened by contemporary standards. You asked for a multicultural society that was successful. I also have trouble believing that enlightenment and tolerance would be counter to the existence of a multicultural society.

"Perfect equality" doesn't exist anywhere for any set of differences -- racial, religious, sexual, familial, anything. So that phrase has no business being used in a discussion.

We can, however, get a level of equality that is functional -- ie, the social or institutional means of denying equality are not so strong or broad in scope as to cause major friction that harms the nation.

The funny thing about miami is their spanish speaking population is not full of mexicans. Most of their latinos are from cuba and south america. I couldn't find many mexicans there.

If all of the Mexicans move to the US, what's there to suggest that the US doesn't then become Mexico? Not to be glib here, but could it be that Mexico is the huge, festering shithole that it is today because there's so many Mexicans there? I bet if there were half as many of them, there'd be that much more food to go around. The US is already teetering at the brink of economic collapse. The last thing we need is more children.

PBeezy is about talk about this shit.

Five objectives:

1. Secure borders.
2. Create a temporary worker program.
3. Hold employers accountable for their employees.
4. Allow "good" illegal immigrants to work towards citizenship.
5. Help new immigrants assimilate.

I love the way he says "Mexeeco."

Great, putting people in prison for giving someone else a job. Good going there, turning ordinary business owners into criminals.

^I dunno how I feel about that.

Giving people jobs is good.

Taking advantage of desperate people by paying them next to nothing for their work...not so good.

^ You would prefer them "not" to take advantage of them?

I don't know about you but I thank goodness every day that my employer is "taking advantage" of me.
I truely hate unemployment, nothing is worse than idleness.

While you are correct that artificially higher wages will not cause everyone to lose their job, it will cause some to lose their job thanks to:
consumer substitution - As some prices rise relative to other prices, consumers change consumption. For example, if orange juice gets more expensive people may drink more apple juice.
automation - As wages rise owners seek to use less labor.
producer relocation - As labor costs rise in California some businesses will relocate to South America.
market dislocation - It takes time for the above effects to stabilize, causing economic losses in the interim.

I don't know about you, but making 10% of the workforce starve to death so the remaining 90% can have a few extra dollars an hour doesn't seem caring to me.

^It always comes to that.

Why don't I buy it?

What is wrong with my brain that I'm not willing to accept that paying people a bit more would ruin everything?

Ruin everything? Stop exagerating my position. Like I said, 90% of the workers will dance and sing your name in the streets. Only a tiny minority, 10%, probably less, will starve to death because of you raising the minimum wage. Hell, even then it isn't that bad, because they can go live with family, start pan-handling, get on welfare.

I'm sorry if you took my position to be doomsaying. We have France as proof that even the most perverse labor policies don't bring about armagedon, just unemployment, crime, and occasional lawlessness.

I only intend to suggest that using force to raise the wages of others is usually a dead-weight loss for both society and the workers in question.

i say the first offense for employers is a flat fine that is painful, but not crippling. second offense is a percentage of their profits, third offense gets their business nationalized.
