yeah i really have no idea who ahmet is at all, but that car is worth more than he's asking....regardless of what you punch in on some website....good luck trying to find a model like that with included options, as well as the piece of mind you get knowing its previous owner was a car enthusiast....but keep punching those buttons on the pricing website though

Actually if you notice, it has two. I believe one is operated directly off engine vacuum, while the other is more of a guess. While the second type is usually fairly accurate the first only is a backwards way of showing you how much throttle you are giving the engine. Notice in the pic above the display shows 24.5MPG it also shows that it is getting less than 7mpg (due to the fact that it happens to be at full throttle).

But Ahmet should be able to give you the difinitive awnser.

Like ^ was saying, the analog gauge is a real-time estimation of gas-mileage. I don't know why it would need to involve a vacuum line for the engine in order to function, as I would imagine real-time indicated vehicle speeds as well as injector duty volumes are both data available via the on-board ecu. I could be wrong.

The digital gauge, reading 24.5MPG is a persitent mileage record, which reflects a running average since the last record reset along with what I would imagine to be a certain arbitrary hold timer chosen by the vehicle engineer.

So I guess in summary, I'd be very surprised if the two gauges used different sampling sources. Instead, the differentiation between the two is that the analog gauge is the instantaneous consumption, versus the time-elapsed average given by the digital.

^^Why do you think mpg gauges are worthless? I'm convinced that having that information readily available to me makes me a more fuel-conscientious driver. Well, most of the time. Sometimes it's fun to bury the needle

this is just a small question for Ahmet.
In the previous picture were you going almost 150 MPH @ about 6000 RPM?

You did mention that you weren't doing that, but explain please.

I do still have the car, and it's still not advertised anywhere. I kind of like this thing, and still don't know what I would get next. Somebody offered me a modded S4 for a trade, but I passed for now. I need to test drive a Boxster S again. Maybe another M3.

Anyway, for the mpg gauge, I do believe that this car uses electronic parameters to drive the analog gauge (obviously as well as the digital). I do know that some of the older German cars (Porsches, etc.) indeed do use engine vacuum (which can give a great idea about fuel consumption as vacuum is mostly dependent on load). The digital read out is the average fuel consumption since last re-set, though there's no delay that I'm aware of, once it's been even as little as a mile, the number doesn't jump around. There is actually two of these mpg counters, which can be re-set independently. I do think the instant mpg gauge (analog) is not the most useful, but it does make me drive a bit more conservatively.

"In the previous picture were you going almost 150 MPH @ about 6000 RPM?"
I'm not sure I get this question... And in the name of accuracy, I took this picture while my friend Nick H was driving. I actually had the car to 165+ in 6th, but it didn't occur to us to snap a picture.

That's funny my cousin is the same way when it comes to milege. She thinks half the cars I've owned are worthless because they've got over 100k miles on them. She also asked me if I had paid $500 for one of my previous Porsches (a turbo S actually) because it was from the 80s, even though it was an immaculate 1 owner car that was always garaged with less than 45k miles on it...

I don't think he's missed anything. I've had problems with my BMW's and neither had that many miles, or even close, when they occurred. Nothing huge, but irritating nonetheless.

When people ask me about 'problems' I've had with a car, I usually don't include things that were wrong with it when I purchased the car. I only look at things that have happened in my ownership. If you're talking about things that 'break' regularly on certain kinds of cars, there are many, many problems one could list with any manufacturer. I've personally been quite problem free with BMWs myself. I've owned an e30 and two e36s as well as this e39, and haven't had any problems during my ownership. I also think that BMW wiring is probably the best of any manufacturer out there, closely followed by Mercedes, then Honda, a couple of other Germans, and most of the rest of the Japanese after that. When it comes to "electronics", the Japanese manufacturers tend to be the leaders, but one has to keep in mind the amount of 'electronics' in a Japanese car was FAR behind most things from Germany in terms of sophistication or scope until quite recently (and one could make the argument that they're still behind). None the less, in terms of pure reliability, I think we all know that the Toyanda Camcord cannot be beaten, nobody is arguing that.
Ahmet

PS: I'm not categorizing wear out items like brake pads, and maintenance items like waterpumps. The exception to this would be if they were to fail in an unexpected manner, or require replacement long before they're due.

Depends on the computer you need, and model/year BMW in question. A lot of the 'older' cars require somewhat more common/standardized computer/diagnostics equipment. A new 7 series really cannot be diagnosed at a non-BMW supported service location, -yet. e36 and e39s (the car I'm selling is an e39 for the unfamiliar), for the most part can be diagnosed with a standard OBD II scanner at most shops. I believe most will give you a free scan even, places like AutoZone.

thanks. that's good to know some places will still even look at it. most places won't even lay a hand on bimmers due to liability. AAA won't even come help you if you are locked out saying the ignition cut off if you tamper with the door....what is one supposed to do

The scan tool we use at our shop is compatible with even the new 7 series. We know this for a fact. Although I havent personally reprogrammed a computer on anything to date my understandign is we can do anything the dealer can do.

I didn't think autologic produced a scan tool (yet) that works with the e62, e65, or the e90 (none of the current chasis). I may be wrong.

^ Well I doubt it covers the e90 being that it just came out. Im not familiar with the e62, and a coworker just sold his e63 so i know it can handle that.
