Excessive advertising really only hurts comedies, imo, because they blow the load on half their jokes
How many times have you seen Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman swimming from sharks and taking thier pants off in the last few weeks ?
Makes you want to see that shit less and less
With this movie and the Jamie Foxx one, it makes me want to see them more 10/14/2009 11:05:51 AM |

i agree, and you are really only seeing the same bits and pieces. Yes, everyone already knows the story, but you haven't really been spoiled of whats in the movie. i'm looking forward to it.

yeah um that wasnt so great. there were several funny parts, but overall it missed it somehow.
i mean visually it was cool, but it was very violent & depressing & scary for a PG movie. i felt kinda lost for some of it.
im disappointed 10/17/2009 1:06:53 AM |

OH NO
VIOLENT AND SCARY
WHATEVER SHALL WE DO
the only problem i have with this is that it's being marketed as a sort of fun adventure fantasy, and it's not that at all
i don't think very small children should see this movie because it's a far too accurate depiction of things the book only hints at
and the trailer would indicate that it would be just fine for an imaginative child
but the film itself is grande ] 10/17/2009 3:20:43 AM |

Saw it last night.
I remember having the book as a kid but I don't really remember the story, just fyi, so my "review" is just about the movie.
I cried in the beginning (oh those hormones) so I was a little taken back by that - but it made me feel for the kid. I thought the beginning and the middle were the best parts. But then it starts to get depressing and the end felt a bit rushed because it didn't feel like anything really got resolved. So I was a little bit disappointed when the credits rolled. But visually it was a well made movie. 10/17/2009 10:03:27 AM |

it wasn't scary to ME, i think it's too scary and violent to be rated PG. that's all.
i just reread (okay, watched a youtube video of someone narrating it) the book and i don't understand why they changed some elements. i think they should have stuck with the wild things roaring at him at first. seems like a practical thing for a monster to do. i forgot what else
i walked away with the same unresolved feeling, except for max & his mom. they didn't finish carole & kw, never got into what was up with the bull with human feet, or why the goat was so retarded.
why the hell did they have carole rip douglas's arm off? we all thought that was just too much. i know they were trying to get across that carole has a temper, but WTF? 10/17/2009 10:47:04 AM |
AlliePaige All American 4510 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah the whole Carole and KW being unresolved really bothered me. And man, I cried when Carole howled goodbye to him, his poor sad face
I really didn't even think that Max and his mom were that resolved either. I also wanted to know how long he was really gone for - just a few minutes in his head or what? Because his suit and his face were as dirty as they were when he was in his imagination.
And yes, we were totally shocked when he ripped Douglas's arm off But it was kinda funny to see him with a wooden stick arm/hand. 10/17/2009 11:17:47 AM |

no infants in our theater, but there was like a 5 year old in front of us that kept asking why everyone did things... "why did he _______?"

I agree with most of what’s being said on here. The music, cinematography, and overall mood of the movie was something special -- just completely original. Gandolfini should get some Oscar recognition for his work, and the little kid that played Max felt surprisingly real. I think everybody can draw from their own childhood a bit while watching it.
Still, the movie left to many things unresolved for me. Instead of walking away curious, I just walk away confused and depressed. I guess the moral is to accept your problems instead of running away from them (and into a fantasy world). But really, do we know that even happened? Seems like to me he just got worried he'd be eaten and sailed back home. Interesting movie, probably destined to be a cult classic, but just didn’t do it for me.

i don't have too much issue with some things being unresolved, or unexplained... if you take the whole wild things part to be something like a dream. i don't think a real explanation/resolution of any of the monsters would really make sense (to me at least). 10/19/2009 3:54:10 PM |

i thought it was great that the film left things unexplained. less is more, right? 10/19/2009 4:08:47 PM |

To me, things were resolved. In the beginning Max promised them that everything would be ok and the loneliness would be gone. In the end, the wild things kept asking when things would be different and things like (Judith comes to mind). I think Max realized that things would always be the same, no matter what he did... So to me, that says things were resolved because he realized it's better just to leave the wild things (aka his feelings) the way they are. 10/19/2009 4:23:17 PM |

agreed. one of the things that my hubs said about it after was that he felt like a kid when watching it b/c how everything just happened haphazardly and random, much like how a child's imagination works. anything was possible and could happen at any moment; the sky was the limit. but at the same time i thought there was plenty of resolution when KW was talking to Max about Carol and family at the end. then Max decided it was time to go home, and that was that.
as far as explaining or resolving anything w/ the wild things, i don't see the point. the wild things all represented (to me) an absolute characteristic of a child (hell, even adults), and there was no need to explain any of it (for me). none had an inner dialogue, except for maybe the bull, and each thought spoken or tantrum or emotional switch was enough for me.
i really, really loved this movie. i didn't think it was too dark or scary and certainly appropriate for children 7+...it's PG, not G. i laughed and i cried, but i cry a lot in movies.10/21/2009 8:40:37 AM |

I'm not sure it was marketed that way as much as everyone associated it with their childhood and automatically assumed it would be. The "inspiration for everyone" slant of the trailers could be taken as giving it the vibe of a family film, but actually looking at the material in the trailer, it's not any more childlike than the advertisements for The Science of Sleep or similarly whimsical films. 3/10/2010 9:46:01 PM |

agreed. sort of.
to me it was a display of the different colours of human emotion on a canvas that is film. the island/forest, a metaphor for the neuro-physiological coalition within the brain-body, is the residence of all these monstrosities we call emotions. the bull only has "inner dialogue" because he kept his trap shut unlike all the other animals.
one main take away from this was the display of destructive power of raw human emotion. that shit is wild yo! reminds me of an ex-girlfriend.
seen it once, liked it enough, would not see again.3/10/2010 9:58:08 PM |
