Commodore hilarity from Brindy's hometown parade:
Quote : | "Rod addressed the crowd. He told us how proud he was to bring the cup home to us. He mentioned that way back in January he had asked Mike [Commodore] to come to the golf tourney and Mike said he'd fly in from Edmonton or Calgary (Rod couldn't remember where Mike was from) to come - but that was back when they weren't anticipating such a long season.
He went on to say he asked Mike if he was still coming after game seven and Mike said, "Yeah, I have a ticket to Vancouver." and Rod was like, "No, man, you gotta go to Campbell River." and Mike responded, "Yeah, I'll just take a cab." {Insert the loudest simultaneous laughing I've ever heard here}. (Vancouver is a 4+ hour drive PLUS a 2 hour ferry boat trip away from CR) but Rod went on to say that that's exactly what Mike did." |

Quote : | "The Canes took the first step in retaining their restricted free agents today by offering qualifying contracts to Eric Staal, Erik Cole, Justin Williams, Mike Commodore and Chad LaRose.
Of the five only LaRose would be inclined to accept the one-year contract, a standard 10 percent raise from last season, because the other four are in for significant raises.
The Canes had until 5 p.m. today to tender the qualifying offers or else they would lose the ability to match possible future offers from other teams.
"We didn't have any choice," Canes GM Jim Rutherford said.
Rutherford also added that any potential offers to Staal, Cole, Williams, Commodore and LaRose would be matched.
With that procedural matter fulfilled, they will continue to negotiate with those five players and their 10 unrestricted free agents." |

what will the NHL be like next year? same exact rules?
will the officiating continue to tighten?
will the NHL further what they did, or scale back the changes?
i need speculation or articles or something. because more of last year would mean great things for our franchise.

The rules will remain the same and continue to be enforced the same way they were this year. The only change is the salary cap has gone up, as it fluctuates according to the previous year's revenue. I would expect to see more teams adapt to the changes and would expect a very competitive year, especially in the Southeast division. 6/28/2006 1:24:25 PM |

They talked about changing the delay of game for clearing it over the glass back to the way it was (when only the goalie got a penalty for it), but in the end decided it was fine since everyone supported it including Buffalo and Carolina, who both had one called against them in a Game 7. 6/28/2006 3:59:03 PM |

Borer is at St. Cloud State and might stay for another year, depending if we invite him to camp. Same with Hagemo except he is at Minnesota. We did sign Brett Carson, who played in Calgary with Ladd. Another 6'4 220 lbs defenseman. If nothing else he should give us depth in Lowell. Jack is the wildcard on defense next year, I don't know where to seperate fact from fiction on this one, I certainly hope their isn't as much bad blood as I have heard. 6/29/2006 11:04:09 AM |

don't know if it's been posted before, but Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann ranted on Karmanos for being a "douchebag" and a "scumbag", and that he was mean to the Hartford fans. i guess they're still pissed that CT's team moved. what would possess someone to spew such kind of shit?
Quote : | "Maybe there's something in the stale air of a sportstalk radio studio that makes talkies say things they probably wouldn't blurt out on a checkout line at the supermarket.
Certainly not in front of their kids. Or their grandmother.
This thought occurred again Tuesday while listening to Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann, on ESPN-1050, hammer Peter Karmanos Jr., who owns the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.
Among other things, Patrick and Olbermann cited what they considered Karmanos' shabby treatment of fans when the team was known as the Hartford Whalers. Karmanos purchased the Whale in 1994 and moved the team to North Carolina three years later.
At one point in their critique, Patrick called Karmanos a "scumbag." Shortly after that tasteless reference, Olbermann called Karmanos a "douchebag."
I don't know if Karmanos is aware of these over-the-top characterizations, which have absolutely no place on a sportstalk radio show airing early in the afternoon, but ESPN suits heard what Olbermann and Patrick said and were not amused.
"It's not our policy to take cheap shots or resort to name calling," said Rob Tobias, an ESPN spokesman. "And to that end, we will be handling this matter internally with both Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann."
Patrick and Olbermann have never been reluctant to offer strong opinions. Both of them have also displayed an original sense of humor, which they often use when taking someone to task. That's why their selection of words, their decision to spew garbage, was surprising.
After all, these are not two radio rookies looking to make a name for themselves by shocking listeners and playing to the lowest common denominator. Patrick and Olbermann usually attack their targets in a clever manner.
Still, their choice of words produced a hangover. On Wednesday, Patrick and Olbermann were talking about Ozzie Guillen's choice of words, specifically his calling Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti a "fag." Patrick raised issues concerning Guillen's homophobic rant, but did not call for the White Sox manager to be fired or suspended.
Olbermann, who said Guillen's comment was "not acceptable," wondered when the good old-fashioned diss, words such as "moron" and "chowderhead," stopped being "derogatory terms." Olbermann should have thought about that Tuesday before deciding to call Karmanos a "douchebag."
Of course, there's a distinction to be made here. Olbermann/Patrick's filthy descriptions of Karmanos are not the same as Guillen slurring an entire group of people. This particular reality will not provide Karmanos, who was gutter-trashed on a national radio show, with any solace.
But maybe in the future, before finding fault with something coming out of someone else's mouth, Olbermann and Patrick will pay closer attention to what comes out of theirs." |

That's actually a pretty good price considering the way things are looking around the league so far. Its scary seeing some of these guys getting 6 and 7 million a year.
I'm assuming the 'Canes also have a good idea on players that expect to sign elsewhere (like maybe someone wants to head closer ot home or something like that) so they are going ahead and filling the spot.

Are you sure? Because even TSN lists the option money as committed payroll, not still just an option. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?fid=7994&hubname=
Quote : | "Recchi's contract for 2006-07 features a two-way option: The team holding his rights could retain him by agreeing to pay him $2,228,000, and Recchi could trigger the option by agreeing to play for $760,000." |
So its not owed salary in his contract, it is the option.
Quote : | "That page does make me sick, though...our second-highest salary is Tverdovsky." |
Yeah, but it doesn't make me as sick as seeing Wade Redden's $6.5 million a year deal... he's a great defensemen but its just getting too pricey already, that's like 20% of a team's salary.
Any guesses on Staal's salary?
