This is the first time in a while that I can recall the general buzz after a release to be positive on message boards and music sites.
Even Pitchfork had something nice to say http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/forkcast/50004-weezer-pork-and-beans-stream
http://stereogum.com/archives/new-weezer---pork-and-beans-full-length-track_009162.html
I still think the 2 verses in this song are kind of awful, but really like the rest of it and have found myself listening to it a lot over the last couple days. It's an interesting song to me because it was written after the band presented the album to Geffen and was told they needed a more radio friendly single. The song kind of tells everyone to fuck off while at the same time appeasing everyone with that sure-hit Beverly Hills style nonsense in the verse, yet with that old Weezer quirkiness and then older big sound in the chorus.
Hopefully it's not like Maladroit where the radio friendly single (Keep Fishin') was actually the best song on the album. 4/17/2008 3:39:25 PM |

^I don't know, most every time weezer has put out something post-green album everyone is always like "he's going back to more of a pinkerton sound" blah blah blah, and it never happens.
Weezer as we once knew it is over. That's not to say that they can't put out a decent album, but it's not going to be the "old" weezer that we knew and loved. We just need to accept that and move on 4/17/2008 3:48:18 PM |

The going back to a Pinkerton sound nonsense is just stuff spewed out by the label and the press before anyone has even heard the music. They quoted that endlessly in the marketing leading up to Make Believe, and it was complete bullshit.
Would anyone want "old Weezer"? I mean cmon. These guys are like 40 years old now. An album like Pinkerton would just seem creepy now. There won't be another album like Blue or Pinkerton; not even close. I just want an album that is a pretty good listen from beginning to end. I'm glad they are "experimenting" now and the other guys are writing and singing.
I don't think anyone truly wants Weezer to try to replicate their first two albums. We just want them to make a good album. 4/17/2008 4:07:12 PM |
mrlebowski All American 9310 Posts user info edit post |
that's not what I'm saying. but weezer definitely had a "quirkiness" to their music that made them unique. they don't need to recreate anything. I'd just love some of that pure originality and honesty that those first two albums had. Hell, I'd settle for a couple good tunes. Is that too much to ask? 4/17/2008 4:12:31 PM |

^^yes
It's catchy, but I'm not sure how I feel about them going back to the self named album and relying on color to differentiate. My youngest sister is probably stupid enough to go and buy this one accidentally when she really meant to buy the blue album.

For the record, it is dissapointing to see Weezer where they are now....IMO the Blue Album was the best album of the 90's. That and Pinkerton were both incredible to me, and I really don't give a shit what any of you think about them.

I disagree sir. They've already tainted everything, so at this point I say just keep going and maybe they could find a way to go out on a high note.
Plus, I've enjoyed something about every album I will say, and the discussion, anticipation, inevitable letdown and backlash each time is worth it just for the entertainment value. 4/24/2008 11:23:13 AM |

I'm digging a lot of this so far. Think I might hate some of it. Definitely a lot more going on here than Make Believe, though. I can't really judge albums until after a few weeks of listening (and there are still 2 tracks missing from this one).
I can say that if you were wanting a trip back in time to the days of their (and your) youth, you might as well not even bother listening.

I'm not trying to defend the band, because I haven't listened to the entire album, and some of what I have heard sucks, but care to elaborate?
I kind of hate to even discuss this so soon, because it will take me a couple of weeks to figure out how I TRULY feel about an album, but right now I think Trouble Maker, The Greatest Man, and Dreamin' are just awesome. I kind of like Everybody Get Dangerous, I guess. Heart Songs, Thought I Knew, and Cold Dark World seem pretty shitty so far, but I've only listened to them once. 5/7/2008 8:41:43 PM |

I think there are going to be a few tracks on this that everybody (from music fans to MTV kids) are going to like... different tracks that is. But they won't like the rest of the tracks.
Looking through the Weezer discography, I honestly think "Cold Dark World" might be my least favorite track on all 6 albums. That's probably an exaggeration, and I guess it does have some nice harmonies between Scott and Rivers in the last part of the song, but it's pretty much shit. 5/7/2008 9:45:39 PM |

Troublemaker - Love it The Greatest Man - So over the top. Love it Heart Songs - wtf adult contemporary? kind of interesting lyrically but so bland Everybody Get Dangerous - yes Dreamin' - Enjoyable. Gets kind of odd around the bridge and might be a little too long Thought I Knew - wtf Brian? This is a fucking The Relationship song.
