haha....i made a $20 bet with one of my walmart buddies that UNC would not finish more than 9 spots above State this year in the regular season standings. Meaning I would win if State finished 10th or better or if State finished 11th UNC would have to finish 1st, or if State finished last, UNC would have to finish 2nd or better. We're using ACC tournament seedings in case of tiebreakers. I thought that was a good bet for me.

Earl, I'm going to give you 5 reasons why we won't finish in the top 5, I want you to refute all of these points and tell us why we WILL finish in the top 5. If you can't then you lose.

1. We don't have a true point guard.
Atsur is ok sometimes, but he has shown to not handle the press well and to collapse in pressure situations.

2. We don't have enough depth.
Lowe is going to play a wide open style of system, look at UNC for example. Last year, UNC had a 8-10 man rotation, this year they will be even deeper. We don't have more than 6 people that I would want on the floor in a competitive game. We WILL get tired.

3. We are short on big men.
All we have are Costner and McCauly, and Costner is more of an outside big man anyway. They will be abused in the post. Don't bother posting Lewandowski because he is an absolute joke right now, maybe in a few years he can get to the level of Luke Schenchur but probably not much better.

4. We don't have any experience.
The only 2 players who got significant minutes last year were Grant and Atsur, the rest played only to give our starters a breather (McCaully) to spark some offense (Fells) or have never played at all (most of the rest).

5. The rest of the ACC.
The rest of the conference is absolutely LOADED with talent this year, UNC, GT, and Duke getting incredible recruits, FSU, BC and Virginia returning great players. We simply don't stack up this year talent wise. I love the team, but I just don't know how it can compete.

We will pull some upsets of course and everyone will be happy, but I don't think we can be consistently good in the ACC this year.

your reasons are good reasons but they are not reasons we won't finish top 5. they are more like reasons we won't finish top 5 in the nation or top 2 in the acc.

almost all the other teams have problems too

1.degand is a great pg. atsure is an ok pg. he can play it. you dont break press with 1 guy. you break it with a few passes.

2.we have just as much if not more depth than duke. players dont get tired from playing they get tired from conditioning. the games arent htat long. only time fatigue is a major issue is acc tourney time we have 8 guys that can play at least ****

3. all we have is costner, mccauley.....AND THE TALLEST GUY IN THE ACC MAYBE NATION?
it doesnt matter how good he is a guy that tall in the middle will be somewhat of a factor. we can throw him in there to pick up a few minutes.
he can also shoot the mid jumper. nobody can block a 7'3 jumper.

4. unc and duke dont have much experiecne but people think they will be great. alot of the guys we have that don't have experience are really good. hansborough didnt have any coming into last year. that worked out well?

5. we don't need to worry about other teams. teams will be great teams will be good and some teams will flat out suck. if we do our job we will finish in the top half.

^^ categorically refuting your arguments:

1) degand isn't on the team right now. stop acting like he is. atsur is injured right now and his problem could turn into a nagging, long-term annoyance.

2) games are 40 minutes long. we won't be running the princeton offense anymore. theres only so much conditioning you can do - the players have to fucking PRACTICE at some point.

3) the tallest guy in the acc doesn't do shit for us if he can't bang with the big guys in the post. oh and he can get blocked, and did so numerous times in the R&W game.

4) unc and duke have roy and coach k. two of the best coaches in the nation (as much as i hate them both, they're fucking good). we have sidney lowe, and to be frank we have no fucking clue if he even knows what he's doing b/c we havent seen the team in live action.

5) we do need to worry about other teams, b/c thats who we'll be playing against.

I'm a die hard N.C. State fan and all, but when it comes to basketball, we just don't have what it takes. Football is a different story in my mind. I think our basketball program needs some new blood or something, it's just been so stagnant. Herb was a solid coach, he just couldn't give us that edge we needed.

We will be fun to watch I will say that. I think we have to run a fast paced offense. We have no Big man period both of our centers Simmons and Brackman are gone. If we finish higher than 9th i will be shocked. Now we need to wait a year or two before we try to fire Lowe.
