--smashing pumpkins....MCIS is better, by the way. i worshiped this band. made friends i still have to this day because of them and our time just hanging out after school in 8th grade, listening to this album backwards and forwards on the 3 hour bus ride home.

--radiohead...showed me the range and the depth of field that music can have. i use radiohead as a standard for whats coming out now. you could perform open heart surgery on me while i was listening to pyramid song, and i wouldnt notice. you got so lost. this was(still is) my "get away from it all" music.

--swift...made me appreciate live performances. it got my foot halfway through the door into hardcore. from here i started liking between the buried and me and bloodjinn...branched out from there exponentially and ive never looked back.

--NIN...my muse. my inspiration. my strength.

--sigur ros...pure inspiration and a departure from the norm. if i wanted to leave my mind, i was listening to them. no drugs needed.

thats all i have time for this morning

Also, it's worth pointing out that Siamese Dream sent me and my best friend on a two-year hunt for the "perfect" Big Muff. When we finally found one, it had a loose connection on the board, and when we fixed it, it didn't sound the same, so we had to start over. I learned so much stuff rooting through antique stores and pawn shops, I can't even begin to describe it.

CUT THE FAT

oh and why the hell is everyone so influenced by early 70's rock. Everyones list looks the same.

someone has to have been blaring Aphex Twin as a 10 year old and pissing off their parents.

^ my list of favorite bands would be different. a lot of times my 'influential' bands were the 'mainstream' (within context) version of a band that got me into that particular sound and thus led me to more bands which i consider better/more appealing to me now. However when picking my influential bands i listed those root groups. which is why a lot of people's lists are similar.

My list looks like a Grunge top 10, but that's because I started listening to music at that point. Until then, I hadn't really payed any attention. My listening to Led Zep and Pink Floyd, etc. didn't get started until after grunge got me listening to music period. That's why mine are all mainstream 90s bands (with a minor exception)

some I don't listen to anymore, in order of introduction:

Neil Diamond - I used to sing "America" when I was about 3, supposedly.
Green Day - Dookie in fourth grade
Foo Fighters - got the s/t in elementary school
Oasis - had Morning Glory since elementary school - still one of my favs
Smashing Pumpkins - ^ ^
Rancid - bought And out come the wolves... from my best friend's sister in 5th grade...listened at least until 9th
Reel Big Fish - yeah ska didn't last for me, thank god, but I listened to their cd five billion times
Jimi Hendrix - started listening when I began playing guitar in ~9th grade
The Who - same ^
Blink 182 - first favorite band in high school
TimothysWeekend/Sedona/Annuals - local favs
The Scaries - ^
Alli With An I - ^
Saves The Day - Can't Slow Down through Stay What You Are
Piebald - rock
The White Octave/Criteria - Stephen Pedersen!
Recover - the first time i saw them i was blown away, second and third not so much
Beloved - ^insert the 2 year hardcore binge as said previously^
Karate - karate ruled
Minus The Bear - one of my current favs - i can't stop fingertapping

on the subject:

"never have I met a group of guys who possessed such an ability to consume copius amounts of alcohol."

Not young, but Bill Fischer from the scaries is the best drunk guitar player of all time. Never have I met a man who possessed the ability to play the 'master of puppets' solo while barely able to stand.

I think I first saw Alli With An I at the Ice House in Cary circa 1999.

I totally have Aphex Twin on my list.

And I'm also pleased to see how endearing The Smashing Pumpkins are to so many of you, too. I called it first, suckahs.

Misfits - The first time I ever realized music was interesting on a different level than what is played on top 40 radio was listening to Collection II in my buddy's car.

AFI - I LOVED AFI when I first started listening to music, but this was before The Art of Drowning when they were still somewhat respectable.

New Pornographers - Supergroup. Possibly one of the greatest bands ever that I've only "discovered" recently within the past year.

Agnostic Front - One of my first shows ever was an Agnostic Front show. Prior to that show, I thought anything even remotely hardcore was stupid and "gay." The show busted ass (at Ziggy's in AB) and I had a respect for harder music after that.

Darkest Hour - I saw Darkest Hour at the Brewery a few years ago and it made me begin to really appreciate metal, all types, which I had also thought was dumb until then.

Glassjaw - Started listening to them in HS. I still love Worship and Tribute.

The Mars Volta - I bought this blindly at the recommendation of my friend Travis. It was amazing. Not sure what it did for my music tastes, but it definitely had an impact on me in some way.

The Shins - Also recommended to me by Travis. I bought Chutes Too Narrow having never heard The Shins. I drove to Raleigh that night and listened to it 3 times.

Radiohead - It's fucking Radiohead...

Small Brown Bike - I saw them once at Go! Studios and have loved them ever since. I miss them.

Ben Folds - One of the first cd's I ever owned, back in middle school, was Whatever and Ever, Amen. I didn't fully appreciate it until a year or so later, but damn.

I could name several more, these were just 10 of the first ones to pop into my head. Misfits is by far number one though. Misfits were the band that made me like music.
Honorable Mentions: Smashing Pumpkins, Aphex Twin, Sage Francis, Jimi Hendrix, Nada Surf, Against Me!, Strike Anywhere, Sublime, 311 (first cd I owned, bought for me by a friend in 6th grade)

1. Swift [v] I have been to more swift shows than any other band, they gave me a passion for once in my life. I relate to all of their music, I was devastated so to speak when they broke up. However, december 22 they are playing again at Ziggy's.
2. Killswitch Engage [a] I could actually remove this band from my list and add another.
3. Incubus [n] Summer after 10th grade, just got my license. I think I listened to this 'Make Yourself' everyday to and from school with my windows down. I was so happy that year, the last true full happy year.
4. Phish [h] The winter of 01 was pretty trying, and I went to my first Phish show and hated it until I heard Wading in the Velvet Sea. Truly the only song that mellows me out no matter how I feel. I regained my love for listening to the guitar with Trey Anastasio.
5. Dave Matthews Band [a] I am always happy when I listen to them I have noticed. I have probably 200 different cd's live and studio of them.... I don't know why.
6. Taking Back Sunday [l] Listen to the song Miami and you will know.
7. Garth Brooks [e] You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy. I grew up listening to it, cried when I heard the Red Strokes for the first time.
8. Tool [n] I could write a book on this one, probably the most metaphoric band on earth and they do it to a different beat. A beat that's never the same.
9. Pearl Jam - I was grunge for a while
10. Frank Sinatra Michael Buble' - I realize they are two different generations, but Frank was love. I think Buble' is trying to bring it back by covering Frank and writing other touching songs
