I hope you're right...I mean I don't like this move, but if it is true, I will support my school/football team no matter what.

I'm not sure what to think about this one.

I like what O'Brien has done in BC with subpar support, facilities, players etc. He seems to be a disciplinarian which is what our program needs. He developed his QB into an All-ACC quarterback and always has strong O-lines which has been a weak point for us.

I don't know much about the dude, this was kinda outta the blue, but I don't disagree with the decision.

I think everyone gets all hyped up in the false rumors they hear from their grandma's uncle's dead sister's dog (or Schlabach's BS), and then shit their pants when someone else is hired.

i dont think that any of these guys in here bitching about the coach would really be satisfied with anyone. We could have Reggie back at DC, Norm Chow at OC, Cowher at HC and you guys would still complain. Fuck you

some good info on him...

Quote :
"Innovator. Motivator. Disciplinarian. Program rebuilder. Now in his 10th season as the Gregory P. Barber and Family Head Football Coach at Boston College, Tom O'Brien has led the BC football program to new heights by instilling his values of integrity, honesty and hard work.

With a record of 66-42, O'Brien is just two wins shy of the school record for most wins by a head coach (Joe Yukica, 68). He became BC's 32nd head football coach in December of 1996 and has since engineered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent college football history by building a program that:

-Won the American Football Coaches' Association's 2004 Academic Achievement Award with a 100% graduation rate and received Honorable Mention status seven additional times during his tenure.

-Was ranked number one in the country by USA Today when the paper re-ordered the final 2005 football Top 25 by APR (Academic Progress Rate) score to measure a combination of athletic and academic success.

-Has won nine games for the third time in four years; eight or more games for the fifth year in a row and sixth time in seven years; and seven or more games for a school-record seventh year in a row.

-Finished 5-3 in their first year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, tying eventual champion Florida State for first place in the league's Atlantic Division.

-Went to a school-record seventh consecutive bowl game and won its sixth in a row (27-21 over Boise State in the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl), the longest active bowl game winning streak in the country.

O'Brien's 2005 BC team was the first since 1984 to be ranked in the top 25 in at least one of the two major polls from start to finish. The team finished 17th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, its highest finish in that poll since 1993 (12th). It finished 18th in the final Associated Press poll, its highest finish in that poll 1993 (13th). The Eagles finished 12th in the final Sagarin rankings, which take into account win/loss record and strength of schedule. According to the rankings, the Eagles played the 22nd-most-difficult schedule in the country in 2005. Only Virginia Tech (5th) finished higher in the Sagarin rankings among ACC teams.

The team became the 11th in BC history to win nine or more games in a season; three of those seasons have come under Tom O'Brien. The 2005 senior class won 35 games, the most in the modern era of BC football history. The 35 wins also ties for the best four-year mark in school history (1939-42). The Eagles have now strung together the most successful five, six and seven-year periods in school history.

The 2005 Eagles led the ACC in total offense, averaging 387.8 yards per game, and also led the league in rushing defense (90.8 ypg.). Mathias Kiwanuka was named Preseason ACC Player of the Year and Will Blackmon finished his career second on the NCAA's all-time kick return yardage list. BC was one of six Division I-A institutions with a football graduation rate of 90% or better, along with Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Southern Methodist and Southern Mississippi.

The 2004 Eagles claimed a share of their first-ever Big East football title, finishing with a league record of 4-2 and an overall 9-3 record, which included an impressive 37-24 win over North Carolina in the Continental Tire Bowl. The team also notched impressive road wins at No. 24 Notre Dame (24-23), the Eagles' fourth consecutive victory over the Irish, and at No. 10 West Virginia (36-17).

O'Brien's 2003 team notched impressive road wins over No. 25 Penn State and No. 12 Virginia Tech and finished 8-5 after their 35-21 victory over Colorado State in the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl. The 2002 Eagles finished with a 9-4 record, including a 51-25 win over Toledo in the Motor City Bowl and a victory over the previously undefeated, No. 4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Notre Dame Stadium. The 2001 season was a gratifying one for O'Brien as well. BC's stunning 20-16 victory over No. 16 Georgia in the Music City Bowl capped an 8-4 record and a top 25 finish in both major polls for the first time in seven years.

The 2000 Eagles posted a record of 7-5 under O'Brien, including an impressive 31-17 win over Arizona State in the Aloha Bowl. In 1999, three years of hard work paid off for O'Brien, his staff and his players as they engineered the third-best turnaround in Division I college football. Led by Minnesota Vikings' first-round draft pick and All-American Hovan, the Eagles registered impressive back-to-back-to-back wins over Syracuse, West Virginia and Notre Dame to finish the regular season with an 8-3 record, a top 25 national ranking and a trip to the Insight.com Bowl -- BC's first bowl appearance since 1994.

O'Brien's first two Eagles teams posted 4-7 records that included wins over Georgia Tech and West Virginia. He coached Mike Cloud to the Boston College all-time rushing record and first-team All-America honors. Cloud was a second-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs while center Damien Woody was selected in the first round by the New England Patriots and offensive guard Doug Brzezinski was picked in the third round by the Philadelphia Eagles.

When he came to Boston College, O'Brien set out to make his teams champions in the classroom, on the field and in the community. His record in all three areas speaks for itself. On a personal note, O'Brien was recently named to the Board of Directors of the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots Foundation and received the John F. Kennedy Memorial National Award, given to "an outstanding American of Irish descent for distinguished service to God and country" in 2005.

Before coming to BC, O'Brien was the coordinator of the record-setting University of Virginia offense for six seasons and a member of the highly regarded Cavaliers' football staff since 1982. Virginia was consistently ranked among the top offensive teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference in recent years. The Cavaliers scored 320 points during the 1996 regular season to become the first ACC team to score at least 300 points in eight consecutive years.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, O'Brien, 55, played at St. Xavier High School in that city. In 1987, he was inducted into the St. Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame -- one of the youngest graduates ever selected to join fellow alumni such as Baseball Hall-of-Famer Jim Bunning and Notre Dame All-American quarterback George Ratterman in the school's place of honor. He later enjoyed a fine collegiate career at Navy, where he was a three-year starter at defensive end for the Midshipmen from 1968-70.

Following his graduation from the Naval Academy in 1971, O'Brien was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marines. He served as an assistant coach for Navy's plebe (freshman) team for one season before being assigned to the Quantico Marine Base in Virginia, where he played on the last Quantico football team. He later served tours of duty in California and Japan. He attained the rank of major in the Marine Corps Reserve.

When his active duty ended, O'Brien joined the football staff at Navy where he coached the team's tackles and tight ends for seven years (1975-81). He was also the Mids' recruiting coordinator, and was responsible for All-America and Hall of Fame running back Napoleon McCallum's decision to attend the Naval Academy.

O'Brien joined the University of Virginia staff prior to the 1982 campaign. He coached the Cavaliers' guards and centers before being promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in the spring of 1991.

Following Virginia's 1994 season, he switched from quarterbacks coach to offensive line coach while remaining as offensive coordinator.

O'Brien and his wife, the former Jennifer Byrd of San Diego, are the parents of three children: Colleen Frances, a 2002 Boston College graduate who works for ESPN; Daniel Patrick, a 2005 BC graduate who is on the Harvard football staff; and Bridget Jean, also a 2005 BC graduate who will finish a year-long mission with the Rostro de Cristo program in Ecuador this coming year.
