Payton is in the top 15 pgs ever. Iverson is probably the best player under 6 foot to play in the NBA. (yes, I'm including Isiah Thomas) They can definitely be compared. Except Payton was a really good defender, while Iverson can't guard plant-life. 12/13/2006 1:50:07 AM |

Denver doesnt need anymore guards really...
his best FIT would be in Charlotte...Chicago could use him
I still think though that the Clippers or Indiana would be a better playoff oriented team with him

are you fucking kidding me? dude regularly averages 2+ steals per game, he's led the league multiple seasons in steals and he cant guard plant-life? we are talking about Allen Iverson here and not Adam Morrison, right? The only legitimate complaint anybody could have with AI's defense is he isn't tall enough to 1-on-1 somebody like Kobe or Pierce in a late game setting when they are gonna shoot a fadeaway
I was comparing their title hopes because they both got to the NBA Finals in their primes on their best teams (Payton/SEA, Iverson/PHI) and lost to better teams (Payton/Jordan Bulls, Iverson/Kobe Shaq Lakers)...same reason you could compare AI to Karl Malone or Charles Barkley or Patrick Ewing or any other superstar who didn't win a title with the best team they were on...Payton just happened to go to a team where he had a chance and win one last year]12/13/2006 10:33:42 AM |

terrific article about Iverson for all the haters
excerpt:
Quote : | " Consider the following:
Fact: He played with only one All-Star in Philly (the soon-to-be-decrepit Dikembe Mutombo in 2001), as well as a host of overpaid role players (Eric Snow, Aaron McKie, Kyle Korver, Kenny Thomas, Marc Jackson, Brian Skinner, Greg Buckner, Tyrone Hill, George Lynch, Corliss Williamson, Theo Ratliff), overpaid underachievers (Derrick Coleman, Keith Van Horn, Sam Dalembert, Joe Smith), overpaid and washed-up veterans (Todd MacCulloch, Toni Kukoc, Chris Webber, Glenn Robinson, Matt Geiger, Billy Owens), and underachieving lottery picks (Jerry Stackhouse, Tim Thomas, Larry Hughes).
Fact: Other than Mutombo, Iverson's four best teammates were Coleman (the signature head case of the 1990s), Stackhouse (a selfish scorer who's been traded three times), Ratliff (a shotblocker with no offensive skills) and Andre Igoudala (a talented athlete who hasn't improved in two years).
Fact: Since Larry Brown left in 2003, he's played for four coaches in four years (Randy Ayers, Chris Ford, Jim O'Brien and Mo Cheeks)
Fact: Thanks to the C-Webb trade and their botched salary cap, the Sixers can't trade for an impact guy unless they keep rolling the dice with somebody else's problem ... a strategy that hasn't worked for them in five years.
Can you blame A.I. for wanting out? Hell, no. That's why we're knee-deep into one of the weirdest weeks in recent NBA history -- Philly effectively putting a future Hall of Famer on eBay for a three-day auction, with a trade expected to be consummated any second -- and I'm not sure anyone fully understands the ramifications here. This isn't just any All-Star player. This could be the basketball bargain of the decade. " |

But ON the court, the dude is just sick
^my main comparison was the "had a chance to win a title in their prime, didnt win, probably wont win now" argument...which I still could compare to Barkley, Malone, Stockton, Payton, Ewing, etc

houston doesnt have anything to offer for iverson.
the problem is the people who have stuff to offer (GS, Boston) are hesistant to give up the goods (Ellis, Biedrins, Jefferson, Green)
and the teams that desperately want iverson like minnesota and indiana really have nothing to offer.
the team that has something to offer and would give it up (charlotte) iverson doesnt want to play for.
So this thing is gonna drag on for awhile i think. The 76ers have nothing to lose by holding onto him for awhile this season. It just positions them better for a shot at Greg Oden. Also it allows teams to figure out where they are in the standings and see that they need another piece to really contend.
Denver for Nene/Jr Smith makes the most sense to me but i REALLY hope it doesnt happen as ive got Camby, Carmelo, and Andre Miller on my fantasy team. That trade would cost me a shitload of cash. 12/13/2006 4:32:26 PM |

Quote : | "Sixers GM Billy King told another Eastern Conference executive last night that he has "two deals on the table, ready to go" for Allen Iverson. One of the deals King was strongly considering is with Golden State, for point guard Baron Davis, center Andris Biedrins and a third unidentified player. In addition to Iverson, the Warriors would get backup center Steven Hunter. -- New York Daily News
With the asking price for Allen Iverson too high, the Celtics' interest in the former NBA MVP may have cooled, according to league sources. Gerald Green and Paul Pierce are off limits. And Al Jefferson may have joined Green and Pierce as players executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge will not deal. -- Boston Globe
At least four Western Conference teams remain interested in Allen Iverson, according to several executives in the league: Denver, which expressed interest in acquiring Iverson last season; Memphis; Minnesota; and the Clippers. -- New York Times
The Nuggets are still running in the race for Allen Iverson, according to NBA sources, but the deal would not include Marcus Camby. The Nuggets would likely trade forward-center Nene and possibly two other players with expiring contracts, along with their two first-round picks in 2007, to Philadelphia. -- Denver Post " |

For the ROCKETS? haha
so the Rockets would rather have MacGrady, a physically gifted player who can't stay healthy (missed ~35 games last year with his back, is currently out indefinitely this season with his back) and despite all his physical talents, has absolutely no drive and determination to win titles, and cant win a playoff series, than Iverson, one of the hardest working players in the game who has proven he has the will to win and has taken a team (without a 7'6" phenom center) to the NBA Finals and pretty much singlehandedly won a Finals game against Shaq and Kobe's Lakers during their prime? rofl
There are top tier players in the NBA: Kobe, Lebron, AI, Shaq, Duncan
Then there are wannabe top tier players: T-Mac, Pierce, Marbury, etc

it would be a shitty trade for the Rockets, especially when talking about working with Yao. Iverson is not the "PG" the Rockets need. Besides the Rockets have been built around Yao AND Tmac.

If Magette and Livingston is on the table then I think Philly should do that deal.
If Baron Davis and Biedrins is on the table then Philly should do that deal. That is a disastrous trade for Golden State. I know they would like to get rid of Baron Davis for someone who isnt such a ballhog, injury prone, and saddled with a bad contract but to give away a guy on the verge of becoming a premeire center who is only 20 years old is a huge mistake.
Chris Mullin is a complete idiot. The Dunleavy & Murphy extensions crippled this team already. Why are you going to move your most valuable asset (Biedrins or Monta Ellis) now? 12/13/2006 7:18:39 PM |
