"i was wondering if you have a 1080p tv... would you rather set your hd cable box to 1080i or 720p?"

Kinda complicated, easy answer try both on what your watching and choose what looks best

1080i is technically a better picture and can be the same picture quality as 1080p, however for fast moving scenes you might want to use 720p. 1080i and 720p are both (generally) broadcast at 60 fps. However with 1080i each frame only contains half the lines (540) and then your tv either updates every other line every other frame (bad) or deinterlaces them to have a 1080p picture displaying at 30 fps (good). An effective frame rate of 30fps might be a problem on sports and thats why ESPN etc broadcast 720p instead of 1080i and if your TV uses the bad method distortions can occur.

Interestingly enough the standard for 1080p broadcasts is set at 30 fps due to bandwidth issues so if you have a tv with 1080p capability and are receiving a 1080i signal at 60 fps (that hasn't been degraded by filtering) it can display at the same quality as 1080p broadcasts will be as long as your chip in your TV is capable properly reconstructing the image and does it without distortions (many budget 1080p's do not have the processing power to do this and do the bad method mentioned above).

Alright I started rambling sorry....

On a 1080p TV, unless it's 720p60 (which AFAIK, nothing broadcasted is), the 1080i will always look better.

In my experience, even on 720p TVs, the 1080i picture looks sharper than the 720 setting.

^ I was under the impression that 720p sports such as ESPN/ABC are broadcast at 60fps. After you said you didn't think so I tried looking it up and could only find this

Quote :
"whereas traditional NTSC countries (North and Central America, Japan, South Korea, Philippines ) are using 24p (for movies), and 60p for high motion programming"

Couldn't find any information specifically... but anyway I agree, use 1080i almost exclusively if you have a 1080p tv. Only exception would be high motion stuff if you are noticing strange shit. Anyway within the next month or so I'll probably break down and finally get a 1080p tely. The 32 inch tube just isn't cutting it anymore.

Yeah, but does Time Warner broadcast the 720p60? I know they reencode everything, and the 720 stuff never looks like 60FPS to me...

I've seen OTA broadcasts though where the TV reports 720p60 as the format.

If you have TWC there is a button that says HD zoom or something like that if you hit that once it will stretch standard def. If you don't have that there is probably an option in your settings menu to force the signal to full screen.

I hate stretching pictures so always letterbox 4:3 content when viewing on a widescreen. That also leads me to one of my pet peves when people stretch an 4:3 letterboxed widescreen video to fit a 16:9 widescreen TV instead of using a zoom feature.

yeah i plan on letterboxing

thats why i found out my 40" widescreen = roughly a 32" 4:3

the cable boxes don't have it, but my sony tv has a much nicer "stretch" that stretches the outer edges to fit the widescreen but leaves the center non-stretched. its pretty sweet - its hard to notice any distortion when you're just watching crap tv like cartoons/sitcoms

Thoughts?

http://tinyurl.com/ynp39j

I think I want to just go ahead and get a new TV to last me a year or so, then move this one to my bed room and get a 50" 1080p unit when they get down to the $1000 range. Either that, or a projector to turn my bonus room into a small theater.

whereas a 42" westinhouse lcd or 37" 1080p, both of which were 999 recently from reputable sellers, is quite nice.

[Edited on January 29, 2007 at 12:04 AM. Reason : no burn in, likely less power consumption, crappier blacks. you'll live]

I just purchased the 50 incs SXRD, LCP projection, i have to say I am very impressed with what you get for your money, and it can be had for less than 2K if you get it on sale from $2499.... plus w/ it being 1080p it wont be outdated for at least a few months

How about this?

My viewing distance is going to be 10.5-11ft

Is 50 to big for the resolution of this one?

too big? eh, i doubt it. you want less distance/inch on hdtv than you do with regular tv, though i guess SDTV might look extra shitty if it is super big.

720p@11ft view distance & 50 inch tv is just about perfect.

That chart is based on video performance, so if you were going to be displaying computer output or static text etc (or even xbox360/ps3) you would probably want higher resolution.

^^ Yea, I've seen that. Only thing is, some folks (I think Noen said it in this thread) that he can really tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on these bigger TVs (50+) at normal viewing distances...but maybe he was sitting closer...like 5-6ft?

maybe he can tell the difference, but it doesnt matter. bigger is better, closer is better. either clsoe or big will let you be able to tell the difference in resolution. like an impressionist painting, the closer you get to it, or the bigger it is, the easier it is to see those brushstrokes.

so your question of if it is "too big" for said resolution is a kinda backwards. you want it to be big so you can see the difference, else you might as well have gotten a regular non-hd tv (except at those sizes regular signals might look especially ugly as noted).

[Edited on January 29, 2007 at 6:39 PM. Reason : 720 will still look very nice, just 1080 would be a bit nicer. they'll still both look excellent]

Umm...no, what I am trying to say is, maybe I am sitting far enough away to not need 1080...maybe 720 is good enough from my viewing distance for a 50" TV.

I ignored you lame ass picture. You made another pointless comment that I asked you to explain. You posted another pointless picture which I also ignored. Then you added another pointless comment.

It seems like you are the one that has the problem ignoring someone.

Get over it man. I dominated you about car amplifiers. I'm not sure why you are bothered so much about this.

as i also noted (and even said that you probably meant that), 720 will still look excellent. you dont NEED to upgrade to 1080p, particularly at that distance. the difference you might notice wouldnt be enough to warrant the extra price probably.

id trust that chart more htan noen, no offense to him and it says you wont be able to tell the difference anyways.
