Mitch's has some great chili, and its close enough to take a bathroom break from class and get a beer.

Anyone that thinks Lexington barbecue is the same as Eastern style has no business posting in this thread. On the other hand, maybe Red Hot & Blue will be just fine for you.

Other than where it comes from on the pig.

The most obvious difference is the sauce.

Eastern NC Style: Vinegar Based
Lexington Style: Tomato Based (even if it isn't as thick as you will find in Texas, Tennessee, or Kansas City)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_variations_of_barbecue#North_Carolina
Read this, it's generally accurate.

Thx. I guess I always thought since it was chopped and the slaw it came with was relatively still a bit vinegary, it would be eastern style.

I knew it had tomato in the sauce, just wasn't sure if that made it tomato based. Thanks

Anybody had Carter Bro's in High Point? Very tasty bbq... owned by the 2 fattest brothers in existence.
They also serve biscuits the size of your head for breakfast.

yum...

Went to RH&B on Falls of the Neuse last night and they had All-You-Can-Eat ribs for $19.99... damn good deal for any other fatties out there.

Ah, nothing like bbq to cause vicious arguments among North Carolinians.

I'm not the biggest fan of RHB. I don't think it's terrible, but it's far behind some others (haven't ever had Smithfield's, but I like Ole Time personally.) But, it's better than having a vacant building looming over one end of Hillsborough. I've been concerned about the fate of the old Darryl's building, and anything that puts a tenant in it is a good plan. Maybe not the best tenant possible. But it's something.

I do agree with whoever said that it would have been ideal for a microbrewery. Since we've lost both Greenshields and Southend in the past couple of years, a new microbrewery would be great...

i dont know how the rest of you feel but i prefer my bbq to have some sort of smoke flavor generally hickory. this is why i do not care for places that only boil their meat (like coopers). it seems eastern places are less likely to have smoked flavor.

i also dont prefer the use of shoulders/boston butts as oppsed to whole pigs as it seems that the whole pigs bbq is greasier.

how ever is its my belief that to have good bbq you must have good sauce. good sauce can make cardboard taste good.

well you are all wrong....the best eastern style bbq in the area is carolina bbq in garner. the guy got his recipie from parkers in wilson, so of course it is the titties. ole time is terrible. tries, but no cigar. RH&B won't last. i agree that the place has been vacant for too long, but i want to meet the person that thought this was a good idea so i can punch him in the nuts.

is parkers the place the has the corn stick things that everyone is always talking about?

if so i had it at a wedding i went to in the wilson area and thought it was pretty horrible, especially the corn things. they were like 2 week old dry out cornbread, in stick form.

when i was in the czech republic i ordered something that resembled bbq at a cafeteria type place thinking it was just some kind of copped up pork or beef. well it probably was, but i think it was made from the organs and the muscle tissue. all in all not bad but the texture was very weird.

FYI, there's no way in hell this place will last even 6 months.

The rent for that space is over $8000 a month. Which is absolutely insane for Raleigh, not to mention that particular building with no foot traffic and no direct parking.

Raisin' Ale lasted what, two months?

Have to have alcohol at a college campus. Ask Franklin Street.

I hate to compare it to UNC, but honestly, after looking at that, how can people try to ask for a fun college street that goes quiet after 10pm?

Red Hot and Blue is alright, but I don't know anyone who will agree that it's a good idea to put a failing BBQ joint in a failing part of town.

its not a failing part of town. it's just a TERRIBLE location for a college oriented restaurant. That location is horrendous for any eatery and the rent is insanely high.

Better off there would be a furniture gallery, or a clothing boutique. Something with more street and driving appeal. But really I dont see how any business will survive there.

^^^ I agee alcohol is a key factor, stop hating it even places on hillsborough st are agaisnt new abc permits.

thats another point, they need to put a place in that college students/college parents, adults, and young professionals will hit up. A nicer scale place and a nice bar I think may work.

Also a nice sports bar could possibly work, there is really no place a lot of people can go to watch a ncsu game or other sports real close to campus (sammy's doesn't count and playmakers is far away/still not that nice.

the last thing this town needs is another sports bar.

the kids who want to WALK from campus are almost all underage, and couldnt get into a sports bar to begin with. there are too many bar/restaurants on hillsborough already. and glenwood south is a stones throw away. there needs to be other business there.

i'm not aware of a decent sized legit sports bar on hillsborough st., esp. in walking distance from campus. that place is big enough to have many large TVs and lots of tables for anyone of any age to grab some wings and beer/soft drink and watch the games in HD. similar to playmakers, but accesible to everybody. or just go to hang out. that is the only place that will last there. a boutique won't last, there is no parking for the people with the kind of money to shop there.

From what I heard but I could be wrong, is that Darryl's was doing fine at that location but there parent company and supplier went out of bussiness.

Their parent co. did go under, but some of the Darryl's were independently owned and stayed open. For example, there is still a Darryl's in Greensboro near the mall. Not sure of the exact circumstances of this one's closing but they did have some issues in the time before they closed (such as being shut down for a few weeks after a health inspection turned up serious violations at one point).

Despite that, I went there. Even trusted enough that they cleaned up whatever was wrong to go back (eventually) after they re-opened. I was sad to see it go.

Smithfield's would be better

^^ That placed closed because they consistently failed their health inspections. The place was a total dump. Honestly I'm surprised they're putting a new restaurant in there without gutting the entire building. I can't imagine it's up to code the way it is now.

A Smithfield's out there would be pretty amazing. And I think it would do alright, because people know it.

A sports bar is a good point. And sure most students who live on campus there are underage, but there are lots of people on the other side of the street that would love to just walk to a bar and watch the game. The problem is appealing to the right target audience. Any bar that is built there needs to cater to the nighttime crowd, who would enjoy the possibility of another Glenwood S. where lots of bars are accessible.

The strange part is the people behind Hillsborough had to have seen the way home values went up when Glenwood became popular. Seems like a good investment strategy to me.

When my boy Red (Red's beach music) tried to move into there, they wouldn't let him customize the place at all for a decent bar style, and the guy wanted a huge price for it.

sports bar won't work.

any "bar" won't work. There's PR's RIGHT next door, Jackpot a stone's throw away, and Mitch's less than a 1/4 mile up the road, not to mention Sadlacks. They all appeal to different demographics, and all will take away from a sports bar.

Micro-brewery is an interesting idea, but I dont think the space is big enough to really be able to put one in.

The people that live behind hillsborough are split between students and residents. The residents go to Cameron Village, not to hboro, and the students go to glenwood south or to one of the 10-15 existing places.

But I dont see how anything can survive there with the rent being what it is.

Yeah, to me the larger problem comes with the location being somewhat at the end of the busier parts of Hillsborough St. To me it ends around Sadlacks, if not before there.

You need a place there that isn't going to get people b/c of convenience, but somewhere thats so good/cool that people want to drive right to that place when they want to do something.

alcohol optional so all the 18+ dudes from state will walk over. that would make some serious cash.
