Quote : | "If Hedican decides to pack it in, he'll end a very solid NHL career. He was a rock on Carolina's blueline during their Stanley Cup run last season, and it's unfortunate that he's suffered through his hip problems. The Hurricanes, however, are lucky to have such depth on defense. If Hedican and Wesley call it quits, Carolina is fortunate enough that they won't necessarily have to find a replacement. But the team does need to make some changes this off-season, and whether they get another reliable defenseman or not, one of their top priorities is getting their hands on a top-six forward.

i just hope we get some forwards that really mesh together for a successful powerplay
it is still my opinion that our powerplay is what kept us from the playoffs, and in fact if we had made the playoffs it would have been what kept us from the finals 5/4/2007 7:03:45 AM |

thatd be so shitty, if the canes ever had to retire crosby's number. let the teams decide who they want to retire. i just think its gay that before last season we had only one retired number, and it was from a guy who only ever tried to beat us 5/4/2007 8:54:01 AM |

I'm pretty sure it's an unwritten law that no one is allowed to have the number 99 due to the Great One's legacy.
However, as far as the 'Canes go... we need a definitive #1 d-man. That and a capable third line center.
Vasicek's a nub, and I could do without Letowski.
And let's be honest, Irbe was good... but he was always "the little goalie that could." To put him in the same league as Hasek and Roy is laughable. He wasn't a BAD goalie, but I would never call him something like a "god of the crease." or anything. 5/5/2007 4:41:58 AM |

And he came back the next season and did fairly well in a limited role. We traded him to Columbus for future considerations, I dont know if he ever played for them though. I think he is in Latvia playing now. 5/5/2007 2:19:28 PM |

he played for latvia in the winter olympics last winter 5/5/2007 2:37:01 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
He played in the ECHL for quite a while, but after we hired Laviolette, he brought Archie back and gave him a couple of starts. After all the shit that happened, it was a really nice gesture, and Archie won a couple of games.
Not only did he play in the Olympics in '06, he was also the flag bearer, and I remember watching the whole opening ceremony just to see him looking like the proudest dude on the face of the earth. Later in the week, he almost singlehandedly beat the American team, making 39 saves in a 3-3 tie. Someone snapped this great picture of the Americans watching the Latvians celebrate, and to me it's very reminiscent of the Soviets watched the Americans in '80 (although the Latvians hate the Russians, so meh).
After the Olympics he went home and played for HC Riga 2000 in Latvia and the Red Bulls Salzburg in Austria. Last I heard, he had signed with a team in Slovakia but had already quit because the situation wasn't satisfactory.
I miss the little guy.
He also influenced me juuuust a little:

Interesting thought:
Jeremey Roenik said he'd sign with a team for league minimum just to get to 500 career goals.
He's 5 short.
I'm not entirely sure how he'd fit in the system, but it's fun to speculate... plus it might get some less-educated hockey fans out to a game because it's a big name. 5/5/2007 3:42:33 PM |

WOOOOOO
I really want to see them honor his jersey up in the rafters after he goes. This guy exudes toughness, and always will put himself on the line to block a shot. He has given a lot to the fans and area, he even used his day with the cup to bring it to troops in NC. To me, he should have the same amount of honor as Francis, but realistically, I'd be happy to see his number 2 'honored' kinda like our bball stuff. I want a Glen Wesley night at the RBC Center.
And I saw where Recchi is negotiating with the Pens. Any chance we try to bring him back here? From what I understand he wanted to stay after last year, but we weren't willing to pay that big option we had.

another write up about wesley and babchuk
[Veteran defenseman Glen Wesley plans on returning for another season with the Hurricanes, reports the Raleigh News & Observer.
Wesley, who turns 39 in October, broke his foot at the end of the 2006-07 season and didn't want that to be the cause of his retirement.
"That was definitely not the way I wanted to finish the year off," Wesley told the newspaper. "I'm really looking forward to coming back and getting a fresh start and wanting to win again. That should be everybody's objective in the locker room. We have a team in there that can certainly compete for it." Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said wants to hold on to Wesley, who is the only player remaining who made the move with the team from Hartford in 1997.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes plan on trading defenseman Anton Babchuk. According to the News & Observer, the 23-year-old is being offered around the league for a second-round pick in June's draft.] 5/25/2007 5:18:49 PM |

Quote : | "Unable to agree on a new contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, Scott Walker plans to test the free-agent market when he becomes eligible July 1.
Pat Morris, Walker's agent, said the two sides have exchanged three-year contract offers but without any common ground. Carolina's offer is believed to be worth $2 million per season." |
