The leatherette that BMW and Mercedes were using in the 80's is some seriously tough material. Far longer lasting than cloth or real leather. Too bad it doesn't feel like real leather.

Played around with a 128i convertible in Atlanta earlier this week. I'd pretty much sum it up as a slightly smaller spitting image of the E9X.....

BMW officially accidentally prices 135i at $35,675*

man that is way overpriced.

Comfort Access is currently an overpriced 500$ option.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mid-life refresh on e90's added it as standard and I'd certainly expect the mid cycle refresh on e92's to add it as standard.

Went back for another class in South Carolina (at the driving school)......they had a 135i and a 128i vert there now. Got to ride in the 135i.....definately a fast little car. I liked the looks in the few pics/video I saw online........but like the car better in person.

gay. i'd rather have a 3-series.

just as porky, but less practical than a 335i.

Good idea, BMW...but shitty execution.

[Edited on February 13, 2008 at 7:20 PM. Reason : and not cheap, either]

[Edited on February 13, 2008 at 7:30 PM. Reason : i guess we'll have to wait for the 1/2 series to get back to what a 3-series should be]

No car will ever be as light as they should be anymore.
Stupid crash regulations, sound insulating, NVH limiting measures all make cars weigh about 1.4 times what they should/could weigh

The problem with the 135i is it looks like all the photos of it were taken through a circus mirror.

Its all bulging in and out sporadically. see http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-135i-official-shots/638189/

I dont know if i like it or not. It's probably the images that are whack.

well I like it anyway. the weight doesn't even really bother me. 3400 lbs is comparable to sti, evo X

it's a couple hundred pounds more than an Evo, except the new fatass, kinder, gentler Evo X.

What I'm saying, though, is that it would be an appealing car if it weighed, ohh, 2800 lbs...or maybe even 3000, and undercut the 3-series pricing more substantially. At 3400 lbs and close-to 3-series pricing, I'd by far rather just have a 3-series.

BMW's specs:

for 335i with 6m
3571 lbs
51.2/48.8 % f/r wt distribution
0-60 5.3
Base: $40,800

for 135i with 6m
3373 lbs
47.7/52.3 % f/r wt distribution
0-60 5.1 sec
Base: $34,900

choosing 135i over 335i means
smaller backseat
arguably not as attractive
saves 200 lbs
shifts weight distribution 3% to the rear
marginally quicker acceleration
save $6k

for 328i with 6m
3351 lbs
50.3/49.7 % f/r wt distribution
0-60 6.2
base: $35,300

for 128i with 6m
3252 lbs
49.2/50.8 %
0-60 6.1
Base: $28,600

choosing 128i over 328i means
smaller backseat
arguably not as attractive
saves 100 lbs
shifts weight distribution 1% to the rear
marginally quicker acceleration
save $6k

I'm in the camp that likes the way the 1 looks and hardly ever use the rear seat. AND I wouldn't have to tell people that I drive a 3 series.

http://www.worldcarfans.com/9080221.009/bmw-1-series-aero-kit-to-debut-in-geneva

BMW 1 series Aero kit to debut in Geneva

Quote :
"At the BMW stand during the Geneva Motor Show you will be able to see this kitted car, dressed in BMW Performance wear. Admittedly the kit does not touch engines, therefore that side of performance remains standard. But that does not mean there is no improvement in go.

Able to be retrofitted by your local dealership, the BMW Performance kit improves upon virtually every aspect of the cars' looks, thereby bypassing the need to hit the tuners’. The products are under full BMW warranty and take into full account safety aspects such as airbags. All 3 and 1 Series models can be fitted. 1 Series almost turns Tii Concept in this kit.

How cool is that steering wheel, for example? It’s made of alcantara and leather, and features a K.I.T.T.-like LED display at the top on the normal 10 to 10 position, which displays all sorts of info like lateral acceleration, ideal shift-points and oil temperature.

Another feature that should be a favourite is the gear lever, covered in chrome and alcantara and said to improve shift travel by about 25 percent. If it works anything close to what it looks like – maybe even feel like Honda’s brilliant 6-speed manual cogs – BMW would have a winner in their hands, so to speak.

Plenty of carbon fiber on the exterior beckons, most notably on the boot spoiler and wing mirrors. Air diffuser looks the part as well, not just adding a source for eye candy but of course useful as a performance mantle piece."

135i

we got about 5 here in gso, one 135 was already sold and we got a couple 128i coupes and a 128cic

i got to drive the 135 and i must say its a damn quick car, rides and handles, to me, like a 335 all day long and stops on a dime. only real difference i can tell in that and a fullsize 3 series is that its almost easier to slip the rear wheels in curves, possibly because of the shorter driveshaft keeping the torque transferred higher and some of it may just have to do with the overall weight of the car.

either way you cut it, this car is def not too soft, too heavy, or too slow...

makes plenty of sense if you know what youre talking about, all my instructors at bmw school have always insisted shorter driveshafts mean more torque to the rear end, longer driveshafts are more rotational mass to lose torque through, simple as that.

make enough sense or do i need to draw you a picture to go with that?

I call bullshit. Saw this at the NY auto show last night and it still looked stubby and misproportioned to me.

lol, i think he's talking about the actual statement and the way it was delivered.

i mean, what the hell is "torque transferred higher"

you dont gotta quote your driving school instructor to make it sound like you know what you're talking about.

just gotta say, more torque to the wheels.

simple.

I'm gonna get flamed for this, but why buy a 300hp 135i for close to $40k when you have (if you wait a year) Hyundai Genesis Coupe w/305hp for under $30k?

^^^
"Hyundai confirmed that the stylish Genesis Coupe will offer two engines - a turbocharged four cylinder and an upgraded version of the 3.8 liter Lambda V6. The four cylinder will put out an estimated 212 horsepower using regular grade gasoline and 223 on premium. The V6 will put out 306 on regular and 310 on premium, which Hyundai says will make it the least expensive 300 horsepower coupe in the world."
