I still would need to find one, plus I would want to save up a little bit more before getting one.

you can't really justify the cost of buying, insuring, and maintaining one simply for gas savings. unless you get a beater for a few hundred bucks or something.

my first two bikes definitely payed for themselves in gas savings alone, but i only payed $50 and $300 respectively for them. i guess i could say my third (and last) one did also, but only because i traded a gas hog of a car for it.

if you do a cost analysis, riding a bike<riding a car, since you forgot to include the possibility of getting hurt in that equation. literally the gas cost and convenience are negligible compared to the major two variables. basically it comes out to (Fun factor) - (Possibility of getting hurt or killed)

that is probably the biggest thing holding me back. I haven't ever ridden a bike so I can't really decide on the fun factor. The get killed factor isn't that big in my mind.

it will be once you start riding and have a close call or two. either that or lookup ogrish.com

find a friend that will let you ride their bike or search craigslist for anyone giving riding lessons (assuming you are not ready/dont have time to take motorcycle safety course). i used to give riding lessons but i prize my bike too much these days. plus it's probably unsafe to ride at this point anyhow lol.

oh I understand what could happen if/when I crash. When a close call does happen it will decently move up in my mind but doesn't really worry me. There are a few other things that have a similar risk factor and I understand and accept that.

I don't have an alarm on my bike, but I would recommend a gorilla:

even an immobilizer, no one hot wries ab ike, they scoop it up and throw it in the truck, and what do you do when you hear a car alarm? look out the window and call the cops? no

Oh, I don't see the need for one either. My bike weighs over 460 pounds dry, which is still quite difficult for two people to lift up and throw in a truck.

Still, if I had a sub 400-lb. bike, I might consider it.

doesnt matter how heavy it is, its not hard to steal, two people can easily get my 660# FJR into a truck without a ramp

So I've never transported a motorcycle before... I've gotta take it about 100 miles.

Think I can safely fit a Sv650 in a truck like this?

That's not my truck, but I have an S10. Also, any tips on good rope/straps/whatever to secure it with?

yeah, it'll be fine. you probably won't be able to put the tailgate up, but that's not a problem as long as you strap it well.

get a bar end strap from cycle gear to give you a secure tiedown point, and dont use the cheap ass ratchet straps, use the cambuckle type, and make sure you compress the suspension while tightening them

do you think i will need a wheel chock for the front wheel, or will 2 tight straps in the front and 2 in the back be enough?

Uh apparently there's an alarm with a beeper (hello 1993!) that alerts you as a motion sensor. I can see that being incredibly annoying with false alarms - but could be good if someone dropkicks your bike or takes it, etc.

I mean, what else do you do? Just hope no one picks it up and takes it. This is a Ninja 250 we're talking about here. Not exactly heavy.

yes ur sv will fit in that truck. mine fit just fine in the back of my ram.

you can see how i strap my bikes by these pics.. no wheel chock

strap around the forks on the front, then around the passenger pegs/subframe on the rear.

lean the bike from side to side while tightening the opposing strap. put the front wheel against the front bed of the truck. and put the bike in 1st gear.

i hope that helps.

^^^ bar end straps are better because they keep the straps off the fairings, and give it more stability

Well everyone, today was the day.

Thanks to all who helped me out, I decided on a 2007 Suzuki SV650S. In red of course

Even better, I got the entire bike + tax/title fees for $5370, brand spanking new. Can't beat that price.

Thx TWW
