^Yeah i can understand the Charlotte hate now. As much as you probably don't want to admit it, living in matthews probably slightly effected your view on Charlotte. Lets say if you lived in Elizabeth, or Dilworth, your opinion might be slightly different. Just a guess.

On a second note Calvin, my ferret, just ran under my desk and pounced on the power strip button, thus resulting in everything shutting down. I think he's telling me to get off the wolf web. Yeah i know i'm a dork for having a ferret.

Anyone see the Body Worlds exhibit at discovery place?

the commute really isn't all that bad, even during rush hour. It takes me 25 minutes to get from Gastonia to downtown (Kenilworth Ave) at 8am during the week. There is rarely any stop and go traffic at all. There are benefits to living outside of the city and commuting in... one being the enormous price difference and less of a "crowded" urban feeling, which I dont particulary like to live in the middle of.

As far as which is better/bigger than the other... they both have plenty to do and sometimes if you live in Raleigh you'll have to go to Charlotte for a concert or game you want to see; and if you live in Charlotte, sometimes you have to go to Raleigh. I've lived in both for multiple years each, and have travelled back and forth to do different things.

i'm just saying, i've been to asheville 5x more than charlotte for concerts and they really only have one venue to speak of. (and i pay attn to pretty much all the tours that go through the state).

the triangle has a lot of venues that get good bands (not just cat's cradle). unfortunately raleigh recently lost king's, but hopefully that will be back up in the next year.

i like charlotte more than the triangle but i've definitely seen better shows (at small venues) in the triangle

most shows at big venues (or lots of them) are at both Verizon and Alltel (or whtaver the fuck the names of the pavilions are now)

yeah i've seen good shows there as well but i've seen more shows at the cradle

i think i went to shows more often in college (when i was in the triangle) than i do now so maybe that has something to do with it

also some of the spots in NoDa like Neighborhood Theater

all i'm saying is that very few tours (that i'm interested in) go through charlotte and not the triangle. (actually very few of them go through charlotte at all -- i guess they opt for the orange peel if they're in that area).

true Raleigh does not have the panthers but i think Raleigh has more of a music scene then Charlotte. Even discounting all the underground shit and places like lincoln theatre; the shows at Walnut Creek are comparable to Verizon Wireless in Charlotte.

Charlotte did not have Widespread Panic for 4/20

Well 77's shit at rush hour, but otherwise it's really not a big deal (not to mention that there are other ways to get into Charlotte besides 77 anyway). If they ever finished 485 up here, it'd be even easier.

I lived in Charlotte, and now live in Raleigh, and there is no way in hell I would even move back to Charlotte.

People talk about the banking there like its a good thing! What the hell, i would never want to be surrounded by a bunch of corporate posers at the bar. I guess it's good, if that's your kind of scene. Downtown may have more tall buildings, but when the hell does that make it a city? Do you guys not consider Paris a city? It has ONE tall building, and if that's any indication, it's a freaking monstrosity. The skyscrapers in Charlotte are only even nice from far away, when you're uptown they're too close and it feels way too claustraphobic.

Oh yeah, Charlotte has no soul, I agree. It has a Billy Graham parkway for god's sake (pun intended) so I beleive that ends the subject of soul right there!

I mean Charlotte does have a few redeemble qualities, like Freedom Park and the eastend are nice. But it's only overall nice for wanna posers and yuppies who want to live in a McMansion, it's queen city of urban sprawl.

I mean Raleigh does have sprawl too, going to North Raleigh is kind of crazy too, but the people are not nearly as insane as Charlotteans, I don't understand how people don't see that. It's like everyone in Charlotte is either a bible thumper or an asshole, or usually (unfortunatly) both.

Anyway, Raleigh real estate prices are rising faster than Charlotte, if that's any indicator of where people want to be. The industries in the different places are indicative of the kind of people who live in the respective places. You need to be creative and innovative to live and work in Raleigh, but you need to yes-man peon to live and work in Charlotte. Raleigh has education and erudition (40% of our population has a 4-year degree, I think only San Fransico is higher). So if these things are any indication Raleigh is going to surpass Charlotte in even more areas.

That's not fair. Not a single friend i have in Charlotte is a "bible thumper" or an asshole. In fact everyone i grew up with is very open minded, liberal and involved in the community. I think this thread has turned into people bashing each city. Saying Charlotte has "no soul" is very close minded and just plain stupid. You can't make blind accusations like that in regard to an entire city. Any attempt to blindly insult each city is just making yourself look silly.

For example i could say more people are below the poverty line in Raleigh, than Charlotte. Or that the per capia income for the city is higher than Raleigh. To insult Raleigh. But where does that get us? This would be a much more productive discussion if we simply made logical comparisons or simply stated the cool things to do in each city.

Wrong, Raleigh is number 12 in the United State for Educational Attainment (Share of Population over age 25 with a bachelor's degree or higher).
Boulder, CO is number one, and San Francisco is number 4. Then Cambridge MA obviously. How did you ever come to the conclusion Raleigh was number 2? In fact Durham, NC is number 6, compared to Raleigh at 12. Although i don't understand how Durham is so much higher in educational attainment than Raleigh or CH. Duke maybe? Doesn't make sense.

^I don't know if that's right. It might be way out of date. I've found serveral lists that rank Boulder as number one.

http://www.forbes.com/entrepreneurs/2006/12/14/boulder-education-cities-ent_cx_ee_1215smartcities.html

or

http://www.forbes.com/lists/2007/1/07bestplaces_Best-Places-For-Business-And-Careers_EdAttRank.html (ranked by Educational Attainment)

Seattle isn't on a list. I don't know why or how these lists differ. Both say they get data from the US census.

^Hey i like your list better. And it seems more accurate. Fine by me. It puts Charlotte number 6. Number 1 in the carolinas!

Quote :
"Charlotte easily outrates more prominent Southern cities like Atlanta, Dallas and Miami in terms of brainpower. Its emergence as the Southeast's financial center has attracted a well-schooled workforce, with nearly 37 percent of the city's adults holding bachelor's degrees. "

While Charlotte is number 6. Raleigh is not even in the top 10. Alright your list wins!

4. Colorado Springs

10. Albuquerque

http://www.bizjournals.com/specials/pages/12.html

In regard to Charlotte being number 6. Raleigh isn't even in the top 50!!!

^oh you're so right. North Carolina has some of the best universities in the United States. So yes, being the city with the highest percentage of college grads in the state is defin a good thing to be proud of. I still love Raleigh, but i can't believe it's not in the top 50 for smartest cities.

^yeah control-f to find it. I don't know how they rank them though. I guess they do it according to percent vote. But again they're pairing republican with conservative and democrat with liberal. There's issues by itself in that method of listing.

That's weird i didn't know So Cal was the most conservative in the US. While Northern Cal was the most liberal.

well, if you read it, it says that they are ranked according to the percentage of liberal vs conservative votes during the 2004 presidential elections.

while its not perfect (since they aren't taking into account the people that don't vote) i think its a pretty decent way of ranking since the people who don't vote don't care enough about politics to do so, so they shouldn't be included as a conservative or a liberal.

^^These Raleigh wankers really need to learn how to experience a city. Raleigh doesn't suck and Charlotte doesn't suck either. There's great aspects of both. Charlotte has probably twice the amount of bars, twice the amounts of places to eat, etc etc. You just have more options in Charlotte. Sure the range of shit to do spans bigger in terms of shittty to great, but you can't put down either city until you've experienced the great aspects of each city. Anyone in here like ^^ who blindly insult a single city haven't experienced what that city has to offer. A truely intellectual person who values the diversity of each city will only comment on the positive aspects of each city, not blindly focus on the negative ones. Any well-traveled person will rarely blindly insult a city without providing proof that it also has quite a few very redeeming features. Most of my friends in Charlotte who have only been to Raleigh a couple times say it sucks ass too, because it's so small, but they just haven't experienced what Raleigh has to offer yet. Same goes for Raleigh residents who've only been to Charlotte a couple times.

^haha nice.
My girlfriend works at Mimosa, and Arpa when she's home for the summer in downtown Charlotte. These places make Raleigh's fine dining look like Ruby Tuesdays. Remember bankers spend more money on food than government employees. I've personally met some of the managers and owners of some of the oldest fine dining places in the state at fundraisers, and they'd laugh at you if you asked them about places to eat in Myrtle Beach. They'd tell you to go back and drink your budlight and play on your surf boards at Myrtle Beach's pathetic excuse for waves. Then they'd probably turn a blind eye, and pretend like they didn't even talk to you.

all im saying is stop letting the city limits skew the numbers. when you talk metro areas they are counting an area twice the size as the area they're calling the raleigh metro. my hometown is like an hour away from charlotte but counts in charlotte metro numbers while places that are actuallly near raleigh like clayton johsnon county and many other areas don't even count as the metro area. consider the same size radius around each city and raleigh wins close. consider the triangle as the 1 metro area that it truly is and it blows charlotte away. I'm talking about comparing the same size areas. I know size wise charlotte is bigger because they expand their city limits well into the boonies like anchorage virginia beach and many towns out west. Don't let that skew you

It can't.

And where is your home town? You can get to any Charlotte "metro" area in under 30 minutes from downtown Charlotte. Whereas if you include the whole "triangle" area as a metro area (any list online does NOT include the triangle as the "Raleigh Metro area") then it'll take you longer than 30 minutes to get there from downtown Raleigh. Any list online lists Charlotte's "metro" area quite a bit larger than Raleigh's "metro area". Around 500,000 people larger in fact.

Poetrickster. You been to any of those places? San Francisco? Or Boston? They make Myrtle Beach look like a car dealership full of overweight rednecks and budlight (not far from the truth). In fact i'd rather go to Boston Beaches like Carson Beach, Constitution Beach, and Revere Beach (all of which you can get to on the T) rather than Myrtle Beach, and Boston isn't even known for its beaches.

The number one thing Raleigh has to offer is relatively douche-bag-free living...Charlotte fails in that regard. And that's why Charlotte sucks.

But, if you like banking towns with segregated schools, Charlotte is the place to be.

And if you're confused about my use of the word douche bag, you can refer to yourself:
