^ Uh ... That is definitely a pretty liberal interpretation of that rule ...

I would doubt that the ball is dead on an interception in OT ... But then again ... Its been a while since I went to a HS football game.

^ I confirmed the rule from talking to a local ref. If the defensive team gains possession in OT, then the ball is immediately dead.

Next week will be a great game between Rocky Mount & Hertford County

^^ Charlotte Christian has a very solid team. They destroyed First Assembly Concord 44-0 (which was expected), beat an okay Parkwood team 24-7, then got an impressive 24-21 win over Asheville High. This week, they were supposed to play Camden (SC) Military, which I know nothing about.

East Lincoln's opening loss to Newton-Conover must have been disappointing, and the win over East Gaston lacks the luster it would have had last year. This will be the first really good team that EL has played, so it's tough to say how they'll do. I'm guessing that CC will be about a 10-point favorite, but early in the season, it's tough to say for sure.

^^^ Rocky Mount vs. Hertford County will be a terrific game! They'll both be ranked when the season's first edition of my Fantastic 50 rankings come out this week. I'll take Rocky Mount by a TD in that one.

REPRESENTING THOMASVILLE

^^ Rocky Mount was #25 last week. Because Rose had already had two close calls against weak opponents, Rocky Mount was a 2-point favorite going into that game, despite the Rampants' long winning streak.

^ Thomasville (which now has the state's longest active winning streak, at 40 games) was in the top five going into the Davie game a couple of weeks ago. Beating a good 4A team was a big accomplishment, but their ranking dropped slightly, as T'ville was a 9-point favorite. Last week's scare against a mediocre Albemarle team hurt more, dropping them to #20.

Wilmington Hoggard representing!! I thought last year was supposed to be our "last chance" for a state championship....they seem to be doing better now. I just saw on the news we beat greenville rose 48-17, last year when half of wilmington went to the game eastern finals in greenville we lost on a 2pt conversion..

Smithfield-Selma (5-0, 1-0 Greater Neuse) at Southeast Raleigh (5-1, 2-0) - This game is likely for second place in the conference, behind Garner

#39 Athens Drive (5-0, 1-0 Tri-8) at Cary (3-2, 1-0) - Can anyone slow down Athens' offense?

Millbrook is much better this year, but their conference is very tough from top to bottom. They're probably only the 3rd or 4th best team in the league, so winning even a share of the championship will require an upset of Leesville or Wake Forest-Rolesville, plus taking care of business.

#71 Millbrook (5-1), Rating:115.3, #29 of 93 in 4A
Conference: Cap Seven 4A (1-0)
Conf. Finish: 1st-10%, 2nd-16%, 3rd-29%
Schedule (thus far): #104 toughest overall, #46 in 4A
Week #1: Lost 6-28 vs. #16 Garner (6-0)
Week #2: Won 3-0 at #273 Knightdale (0-5)
Week #3: Won 42-14 vs. #173 East Wake (1-5)
Week #4: Won 26-17 at #90 N. Durham (2-3)
Week #5: Won 28-25 at #122 Apex (2-3)
Week #6: Won 66-17 at #210 Broughton (2-4)
Week #7: vs. #147 Wakefield (4-2) 80% W (12 pts.)
Week #8: at #79 Sanderson (5-1) 51% L (1 pts.)
Week #10: vs. #25 Leesville Road (6-0) 76% L (10 pts.)
Week #11: at #27 WF-Rolesville (5-0) 82% L (13 pts.)
Week #12: vs. #157 Enloe (3-3) 82% W (13 pts.)

Catholic is still very good this year, and has done reasonably well against a brutal schedule, winning two games against ranked opponents. The Queen City is the state's weakest 3A or 4A conference, so another league title is almost a given. That will be enough to give Catholic a high seed in the playoffs, and I do expect another decent playoff run from them.

#29 Char. Catholic (4-2), Rating:126.2, #9 of 97 in 3A
Conference: Queen City 3A/4A (1-0)
Conf. Finish: 1st-89%, 2nd-9%, 3rd-2%
Schedule (thus far): #6 toughest overall, #2 in 3A
Week #1: Won 28-27 vs. #45 S. Mecklenburg (4-1)
Week #2: Won 35-18 vs. #145 Myers Park (2-3)
Week #3: Lost 6-14 at #9 Char. Country Day (5-0)
Week #4: Lost 22-44 at #3 Charlotte Latin (5-0)
Week #5: Won 26-24 vs. #33 N. Gaston (4-1)
Week #6: Won 35-28 at #99 Olympic (1-5)
Week #7: vs. #277 Waddell (0-5) 99% W (34 pts.)
Week #8: at #172 Harding (2-3) 94% W (22 pts.)
Week #9: at #339 Garinger (0-5) 99% W (40 pts.)
Week #10: vs. #181 W. Mecklenburg (3-2) 96% W (25 pts.)
Week #12: vs. #330 Berry Academy (0-5) 99% W (39 pts.)

Not betting lines, per se, but there are 3 or 4 sets of computer rankings published weekly on the Web, and each of the authors also makes predictions for future games.

also former Wolfpack player as well. Great guy. My mom talks to him almost everyday(she works at SSS), and said he is very respected at the school.

glad to see Smithfield-Selma doing well, since i left there. too bad they finally played decent 4aa school and lost. Maybe they can pull what we did my Junior year and upset Garner(we didnt upset Garner, but upset East Wake...they finished that year in the top-10 in the state, it was sweet)

they also got that Dixon kid playing RB who is 6'3 235 and can FLY

Athens Drive 49, Fuquay-Varina 21

Athens QB Nick DeMuro threw for over 500 yards, and accounted for all seven touchdowns (five passing, two rushing), for the undefeated Jaguars. He shredded a Bengal defense that had given up only 31 points all season, handing Fuquay their first loss of the year.

^^ If you only saw the final score of the Athens game, you don't know what a battle that was. Lee (which has only won twice all year, both times against awful opponents) led Athens 14-6 at halftime, and 28-26 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Every time I announced a score with Athens losing at last night's Fuquay-Varina vs. Middle Creek game, a huge roar went up.

^ Hoggard is terrific again this year; they should easily roll to the 4A state championship game, where they are likely to meet West Charlotte. However, either of those teams could turn out to go 4AA.

Richmond vs. Scotland is, IMHO, the biggest rivalry in the state. The Scots have a great chance this year to beat the Raiders for the first time since the mid-1990s. Richmond-Scotland is a rivalry I've been wanting to see in person for years, along with Pisgah-Tuscola, Shelby-Crest, etc.

fantastic, i was at the FV game last night...didn't know you did the announcing over there.

also, FV has the absolute worst bleachers/stands i've ever seen.
If they keep winning they will need to get some larger stands in there...

Garner, Cary, Middle Creek, Broughton...all have nice and large stands...fuquay needs to catch up

^^ I had a rough night behind the mic last night. After giving the Athens-Lee score, I had the Jaguars on my brain, and TWICE called the Bengals' opponent "Athens Drive" ... very embarrassing! The stadium was plenty adequate when Fuquay was 2A, but is certainly too small for a 4A school. However, stadium bleachers are super-expensive (six figures to make a decent expansion), and the county doesn't pay for squat. But the "new" schools (including Middle Creek) don't have very large stadiums, either -- I bet MC doesn't seat more than 2,500.

^ FVHS was a 2A power in the 70s and 80s, then a 3A power (in a weak conference) in the mid-90s, but '96 was the last of the "glory years." Things turned to $@%# during the years that I was the athletic trainer there (1998-2002, including the move to 4A in 2001) and stayed bad through the 2004 season. Under a new, veteran coach, FVHS won their conference the last two years (and went 11-3 last year).

Also, the school's academics are getting better (in the middle of the Wake schools), as compared to 3rd-worst (ahead of Garner and East Wake) when I was there. FVHS has had its' share of rough kids (sadly, one of my former students died recently), but also some football players who did the school proud, including Anthony Perkins (FVHS '97 - later started at UNC) and William Lee (FVHS '02, later the starting long-snapper at NCSU, while graduating with a 4.0 in engineering), both of whom are outstanding young men.

Three big games locally tonight, if they don't get rained out ...

#19 Leesville Road (9-0, 4-0 Cap Seven) at Millbrook (7-1, 3-0) - This is the first of the three-part championship series in the conference, with neither team having faced #43 Wake Forest-Rolesville (8-0, 3-0) yet.

Southeast Raleigh (7-1, 4-0 Greater Neuse) at #13 Garner (8-0, 4-0) - For the conference championship; the winner also will be in the draw for the #1 seed in the 4AA East.

Southern Durham (4-4, 3-1 PAC) at Roxboro Person (5-2, 4-0) - The winner should get at least a share of the conference championship, with Durham Hillside (6-2, 3-1) still in the race.

Down in the Sandhills, #7 Richmond County (8-0, 4-0 MSEC) at #35 Scotland County (8-0, 4-0) - The Scots have their best team in a long time, but they're a 10-point underdog at home against the arch-rival Raiders, who have beaten them 13 (?) years in a row.

Out west, #2 Charlotte Latin (8-0) at #10 Belmont South Point (8-0) - this is a non-conference battle of the state's top private school team and one of the best 3A teams.

In Greensboro, #45 Northeast Guilford (6-2, 2-1 Triad 3A) at #33 G'boro Dudley (6-1, 3-0)

In the small schools, North Duplin (7-0, 2-0 Carolina 1A) at Ayden-Grifton (7-1, 2-0) is the biggest game of the week.

Every Friday night at 10 p.m., unless everything is rained out, WPTF-680 AM has an hour-long scoreboard show, mostly focused on the Triangle area.
