JC?

My brother's coming up this weekend. I'm planning on hitting Greenwich village hard, as well as watching the NCSU game at Brother Jimmy's on 77th Saturday.

Hells yeah

my gf and i will be at BJ's on saturday for the alumni game watch. i went to blue seats in SoHo for the d00k game. really good bar with lots of tvs and decent food. i'll probably try to make it out there for games when there is no alumni game watch.

I was at Brother Jimmy's in the Upper East side for the State Wake game on Sunday. A UNC fan came in and started talking all this shit, got kicked out, 15 minutes later 2 huge fire trucks showed up asking where the fire was. What a little bitch.

Wow.

I was out for brunch the other day and didn't know some of the people in our group. One of them was about as much a flamer as you could be. Where'd he go to school? UNC.

Yea still a ton of state stuff in there

The MSG one isnt as good (set up wise) as the upper east and west ones but its nice to have one closer to the lower east side.

True, but I know a lot of the staff at the 77th street location. Plus I hold a grudge against the MSG one, since the first time I tried going there they were closed (1am on a Thursday night, WTF?!?!). I think they're looking to open one further downtown on the east side. I know they own property there.

any relatively cheap hotel is going to be in a shitty area.

theres a holiday inn around the gowanus canal in brooklyn, I think its around 200 a night.

do a price sort on expedia and find one with a shared bathroom. there are many hotels with shared bathrooms that are really nice in nice areas and theres a chance you could be the only one in the "suite" anyway. usually ~70 bux a night

what about parking, do many of these places have their own parking decks/garages, or am I looking at paying for public parking too?

Want my suggestion? Stay at any hotel in Elizabeth, NJ across from the HUGE Garden City outlets.

A bus comes everyday numerous times to there and back to shuttle ppl into NYC. The $9 fare is cheaper than paying the Lincoln Tunnel fare + parking for 1 hour NYC. Maybe a 15 min. bus ride, and the hotels are WORLDS cheaper, and parking at those NJ hotels is always free.

Worked like a charm for me.

thats a good mindset but it would be a better idea to stay right across in newark hoboken or the meadowlands and catch the nj transit into penn station.

Thanks for the advice from those who gave it. I ended up staying at the Best Western President Hotel which is right by times square. It was great. And thanks to an overbooking mistake, being out of the room I was looking for, they gave me a free upgrade.

^ I was in Brooklyn on Saturday (2nd time in NYC), was happy that I have an iPhone as the triangulation thingy on google maps really helped me out. I really need to figure out the subway system... I spent $70 on cab in 1 night.

whoever said they have to figure out the subway,

as someone who lives in a metropolitan area w/ rail mass transit (DC Metro)

i've found New York's subway system to be the most intuitive and user friendly system I've ever ridden on.

"oh yeah, as far as bars...there is one in soho called the back room bar, it used to be an old speak easy"

This place is actually called "The Back Door" and its in the Lower East Side near the corner of Norfolk & Rivington. Look for the big black bouncer standing in front of a small gate with a small sign saying"Lower East Side Toy Factory" on it. And if you don't have at least a 50/50 ratio in your group you're not getting in.

Pretty cool place, and you feel like a pimp for A) finding it, and B) getting in

Also, in the summer time the Bohemien Beer Garden in Astoria is a great place to relax with some tasty brews. They claim its the only authentic beer garden left in the city.

^huh? As far as I know they've always been open on weekends. First time I went was on the weekend in January '05. Last time I went was back this past February

Last tour is at 4pm, and you no longer get a free beer. And beers at their bar went up to $4.

Stupid malt and hops price increase!

our lead guitar player is going to spend a month in Manhattan starting in about a week. I've never been to NYC and am thinking of flying up now in like 3 weeks. Ive seen some decently priced tickets that weekend flying into La Guardia but I dont know the first thing about NY or LGA or how close that is to/how easy it is to get to Manhattan from there etc. Any suggestions?

LGA is the closest airport to Manhattan so from a taxi point of view yes its the best.

Is it a decent airport or pretty sketch? It has been by far the cheapest ticket flying direct out of greenville, sc. The next closest tickets are flying to like JFK from charlotte and thats still more and has a 1hr 30 min drive to the airport for me and also paying to keep my car there.

Also, what kind of cab fares are you looking at in NYC from an airport to something in manhattan (i dono 10 miles away)? i read on a google link like $25ish? I havent really looked into the subway much either yet.

lol

LGA isn't "sketchy". Its always the cheapest of the 3 around NYC, but come on do you think they'd have "sketchy" international airports? I fly into and out of LGA more often than JFK & EWR combined.

Cab fare from LGA to Manhattan will definitely run you $25 at least. Depends where you go though, and what time of day (traffic, etc). You can't take the subway from LGA, it doesn't run there. Instead you can take the bus for $2 to the subway in Queens and then take that into Manhattan. If you fly to JFK you can pay $5 to take the "Air Train" to the subway, and then hop on the subway (JFK is further away though, so when you get on the subway you're still looking at 1/2 hr). EWR (Newark) is in NJ and there is a shuttle train ($14) you can take to Penn Station in Manhattan (west side of mid-town).

Also, you should know that in the national ranking of airports, the 3 NYC area airports finish in last place, 2nd to last, and 3rd to last, in DELAYS. So my advice is to fly into or out of NYC in the morning (before they can fuck anything up) and to take direct flights (so you don't miss any layovers).

^^if you're not picky about what time of day you fly up and down you should look at Jet Blue. They have some really low fares sometimes, and their flight accomodations rock. Of course, they only fly to JFK.

i appreciate the insight. ive never flown a commercial flight and never been to NYC so im just planning this all out carefully

the one flight i was looking at arrived at LGA at 8am on a Friday (i thought about getting in on thursday night and that would be my preference but there werent any direct flights on thursday night for some reason that I saw). So far it looks like greenville, sc to LGA then cab to manhattan.

^? Sorry, should have clarified. Their "happy hour" is now open on weekends. You are right that the tour has always been open weekends, but now you can go there just to drink on other days than Friday night.
