my problem with Schoolkids is with Used Vinyl selection (which I know they cant control all the time, but...)
I was in the store when a guy brought in probably 50 used records, including some badassery like an Uncle Tupelo disc.
I watched the guy behind the counter thumb through everything, putting all the cool in one pile for himself and designating all the weird crappy stuff into the "shelf" pile.
Another time, my friend asked them to order Daydream Nation for him on the big disc, and instead they just opened a special cabinet of all the cool new vinyl they were holding for their friends/themselves instead of putting them out.
So, yeah, go check out the used records there. Frustratingly poor selection. Nice Price FTW. 2/27/2008 10:14:10 AM |

There's a copy of it in with all the other new vinyl right now.
Plus I just bought a used record there for $1. They've made more space for those recently.2/27/2008 11:34:18 AM |

but the point is, at the time... they weren't putting something cool on the shelves that they had in the store b/c of employee favoritism. and yes, I know they've made more space, but there's still just a bunch of random stuff that hasn't really moved from the shelves in months. Nice Price has a "new arrivals" for their used vinyl, which is nice. I'm not sure who gets sold more, though, so no judgment.
all that said, no big deal, I'll continue to shop there and have them order new Vinyl for me... it is worth the extra dollar (and usually there isn't any markup) over ordering it from some online retailer if it keeps business coming to the record store in my neighborhood

I agree with you on the concept you are talking about, but Best Buy does not own FYE or Suncoast. They are subsidiary brands of Trans World Entertainment.
Trans World: - Coconuts - FYE - Spec's Music - Saturday Matinee - Suncoast - Wherehouse Music

For the record--ha-ha, get it? --I didn't "bitch at the fucking kid," ass. I politely asked him to turn down the music just a little so I could ORDER CDs, YOU STUPID FUCKING IDIOT!!!1 I COULDN'T CONDUCT THE BUSINESS TRANSACTION, DO YOU GET IT NOW, YOU STUPID FUCK?!!!1
Ahem. . .after I made a polite and reasonable request that would have facilitated an exchange of currency for a good that theoretically would produce a profit, which I assume is the purpose of the establishment in question, the employee at issue condescended, which should come as no surprise to anyone that is even remotely familiar with hipper-than-thou attitude of Schoolkids Records.
In any event, concerning the Chapel Hill Schoolkids, "another one bites the dust"--bada, boom, boom, boom.

i still don't understand hooksaw attesting "hipper-than-thou" to schoolkids employees. i've worked there for three years, and i'm a fucking geek. i'm also pretty sure that nobody there gives a fuck what you buy. thomas is really skinny, though, if that's what you mean.
and to the dude that missed the uncle tupelo record: don't you have any perks at your job? i'm an adult making less money that most kids in high school. you're damn right i'm taking the records i want first. i do feel bad you had to see it, though.
also, the folks at nice price take what they want before putting it on the shelves. that's how it works at every record store. it sucks, but, hey, i go record shopping all the time and get a little bummed when i spot all the awesome shit behind the counters of other stores. at least schoolkids doesn't check every piece of vinyl on ebay before putting it out.

This is true. When one of my buddies worked at Nice Price, I had a standing order for any quality britpop vinyl that showed up (Suede, Pulp, etc.) and I got some nice stuff without having to really hunt for it.2/28/2008 1:05:52 PM |

^ and ^^^... true, but it is worth knowing that the record store suffers as a result.
as in, I have quit going to Schoolkids to browse used records because it has been the same shit for months and months. I'll still buy new and get you guys to order me new vinyl instead of hitting up an online store, but... I'm not the only person who has noted the lack of quality used records at the neighborhood record store 2/28/2008 8:27:05 PM |

i tried to leave this thread alone, but i have to say something now
so here is the deal. you came in around lunch time, so both our general manager and owner were still there. not that we play the music really loud anyways, but if they were there, there's no way the music was too loud to conduct a business transaction. in fact, i asked our general manager (who is over 50) later that day if it was too loud when you came in, and he said it wasn't even loud at all. also, I have never had anyone ever come up to us and tell us to turn the music down in the 2 1/2 years I have worked there.. so obviously we know what a reasonable volume for music to be played at is
second, i read a few posts up where you are basically celebrating the fact that the chapel hill store closed.. what the fuck? who does that? i'm sorry that your old-ass ears couldn't handle some fucking "vintage" Otis Redding playing through the store speakers, but is that really reason to be happy about someone's store closing.
and I am "friends" with plenty of returning customers.. and i'm pretty sure the friendliness of the Chapel Hill employees was about 0.00003% of the reason that it closed. no one i know that works there (which is 3 other people) has a "hipper than thou" attitude towards customers.
i heard barnes and nobles has a super sweet music collection you can check out.. you might even get to hear some enya while you browse.. i'm sure it won't be too loud either, so don't worry
in conclusion, fuck you.

Unless the music was violating OSHA standard or legal levels of loudness, you've got to be a complete douchebag to go in to a music store and complain about music being played.3/1/2008 8:15:40 PM |

Okay, I'm going to try this one more time:
Q. As long as the music in the store can still be heard, why should it be a problem if a customer asks that the volume be turned down just a little so he can hear himself order CDs?
A. Because the store employee at issue and many here support and perpetuate hipster bullshit as more important than a sale or customer satisfaction. And it's just one more reason that independent record stores across the country are closing at a rapid pace.
Q. Why does it matter what music was playing at the time? Why does the store employee keep incessantly reminding us that Otis Redding was playing?
A. It doesn't matter--the music was not the issue; the volume was. Because he wants others to know that he was playing cool music--HEY, JUST LIKE HE DOES IN THE FUCKING STORE!!!1
Q. Has anyone else asked that the volume be turned down a little?
A. Yes. I was standing right there when another guy about my age asked a kind of short guy with bushy hair, glasses, and maybe a beard to turn it down. I mean, you couldn't even hear yourself talk.
