To whom does this refer? I graduated with a 2.low and have a kick ass job. In fact, I did not have a single interview during which the interviewer asked for my GPA.

I guess it depends on the field though ... I certainly couldn't become a teacher ...

Your point? Or is it pretty straight-forward? In journalism it's not based on how you take a test, it only matters how well you perform in the field ...

^ I agree some fields it really doesn't matter. I was speaking for engineering mostly, although I'm sure that it would be difficult to land a comm/PR job/Business with a crappy GPA also... it just shows that you didn't care enough, or didn't manage your time well enough to do good(well?) in school.

a Case of Bud/bud light costs $16.50 give your person a $20 and let them keep the change. A Case of Busch light costs ~13... give your person $15 and let them keep the change. PBR/Keystone light/Schlitze are all <$6 12packs... if you have a regular buyer, this is a good cheap approach... I was loyal to bud light my freshmen year only b/c I thought it was as cheap as any other crappy beer... crappy beers do taste slightly different but as a broke college student the cheaper you can get drunk the better...

2 40's will set you right for $3.50... 3 40's will flip your world.

jack daniels and jim beam are both expensive(~$20 1/5th(but awesome) if your not drinking liquor in general straight, it's ok to go with cheaper stuff... Kentucky Gentlemen 1/5's are like $6 and mix just as well as nicer stuff... Burnetts flavored vodka's are only $6.50 a 1/5th vs $12 for absolute...

Gin and tonic's are awesome, just add a splash of sprite...

Learn how much your allotted for each meal on your meal plan and tailor your meals accordingly... pick up an extra cookie/chips/apple if you have a little bit left over and take it home for a snack later instead of a trip to the C-store.

The dinning halls have a TERRIFIC sandwich spread... you can make a roast beef sandwich that is 4" thick and would cost you $5 in deli meat for the simple price of admission...

busch light all the way till you get a job and some cash flow, then switch to bud light or miller lite.

hahaha, if that's your idea of "stepping up"... then good for you

when you get a job you can afford 6packs of real beer for "sipping/dinner" beer... a concept that you will learn when you finally realize that beer can be a tasty treat as opposed to a means to get you wasted...

my g/f likes coors light, so I have that on hand when she's around and wants to drink on beer (most of the time she goes for gin gimlets)... but I would have sierra navada or some local brew on hand... my favorite beer period is Chimay blue... but that's only a special treat for myself since it's $10/bottle

good call the places to eat on campus are shitty, overpriced, and way too crowded.

Hillsbourgh street is way underrated.

Try almost $20 for 1/5 for absolute.

Quote :
"busch light all the way till you get a job and some cash flow, then switch to bud light or miller lite."

you obviously have a shitty taste in beer.
I consider bud lite/miller lite "cheap" beer. I only buy busch light or worse if i
know i am going to have a bunch of girls/freshman asking for beer all night or if i am
short on cash.

if you are working a real job 40 hrs a week Sam Adams, Killians, Boddingtons, Red Hook,
Pacifico, Sierra Nevada, Bass, etc is where it is at.

^what he said...

I have a friend and every time we go to Flying Saucer for Pint Night on Mondays the ONLY
thing he gets is Bud Light. that shit drives me crazy

-If you don't live in UT, don't go there. All the campus dorm kids hate it.
-Watch out for Ace Towing, they are criminals.
-Don't drink and drive.
-Go to the gym a lot.
-Try and not to stay up and booze more than two nights in a row.
-Schedule late classes.
-Go to professor's office hours once in a while. You don't have to talk about class, just shoot the shit. It will help your grade more than you expect.
-Don't waste your time hanging out with ugly girls. They come in groups and no they don't have hot friends.
-Don't have relationships with freshmen girls.
-If you have a fake be smart about it. If it gets taken, don't argue. Turn and walk away quickly.
-Don't go to Panama City for spring break.
-Stay out of people's business, and don't talk shit. Be reliable to your friends.
-Don't ditch your boys to hang out with your girlfriend.
-Don't waste money on taking girls out to eat for a year or two.
-If you get busted for something, don't admit anything. Act stupid.
-Participate in class discussions, you can have shitty test grades but you'll still do fine.
-Learn the difference between your and you're, its it's.
-Don't put a bunch of shit on your facebook page.
-Keep up your personal hygeine you dirty fuck.
-Sleep with every hot girl you get the chance to.
-Don't call her back for two days.
-Sit next to the best looking girl first day of class. I've had 3 or 4 gfs because of it.
-Do pranks on your roomate, suitmate and the kids down the hall.
-Busch lite is the shit, stay away from copper top.
-Don't hang out with stoner kids too much.
-Be single on Christmas, Valentine's etc. Don't buy that shit.
-Don't get sucked in with maladjusted Campus Crusade kids. The girls might be hot but they all want husbands.
-Go do some kind of prank on UNC's campus.
-Hang out with Meredith and Peace girls but keep them on the back burner.
-Don't ride the bus, losers ride the bus. Walk fatty you live on campus.
-Go to summer school at UNCW. Don't go home it sucks now.

Wow that was a long but easy list to make.

what are you talking about. I loved visiting UT my freshman year eventhough I did not live there.

Although i have heard they have gotten A LOT stricter as far as cracking down on alcohol and partying

All of my buddies that would visit me when I lived there would complain.

"man these snobby UT girls daddy's money blah blah blah"

I didn't agree because they were all sluts, but that's just my experience.

-Always do your homework, well and on time. If you do, you probably know what's going on in class, can't fall behind, and even 10-20% of your grade is a big part.
-Get enough sleep and take care of your other needs. You can’t pay attention in class if you’re tired. You can’t work to your potential if you’re hungry. You can’t concentrate on a test if you have to use the bathroom.
-Take responsibility for yourself. Nobody's going to make you do anything.
-Stay on schedule. You'll fuck up much less when you do stuff when you're supposed to.
-Understand the material. Don't just memorize the content, learn the concepts. Otherwise, you haven't learned anything and you won't do well on tests.
-Know your purpose. You’re not going to do much in school if you don’t know why you’re in school.
-Get the skills for what you plan to do next. Get good grades if you want grad school. Get work experience if you want a job.
-Be smart with money and other obligations. Don't sign up for bad credit cards and don't make promises you can't keep.

Oh, and if you need to take a shit, eat at Fountain.

the white is worth mentioning if you can't find the blue... the red isn't worth being labeled "Chimay"
they sell all of them at Total Wine... the red is almost watery and I was REALLY disappointed by it

just keep your GPA at 3.00, also, do a CO-OP or something to get experience in your field, you will get a leg up on other students when you graduate...it could lead to a perm position with that company. Working at Starbucks or as a Hooters girl does not look good on your resume. Get some sort of experience in the field you are majoring in, something, anything, intern, something.

[Edited on September 15, 2007 at 10:45 AM. Reason : COOP your junior year]

[Edited on September 15, 2007 at 10:46 AM. Reason : or summer sophmore year]

Try your best to stay at State, or whatever school you're attending. I've never spent more than three semesters at a school and I've forged virtually no meaningful relationships with anyone who could potentially benefit me. I also took Fall '05 off due to Hurricane Katrina, and spent that following year working full-time. I'll be returning to U of New Orleans in the spring, and I've got a little less than two years left to go... I'll probably have to stretch that just to form the kinds of relationships I should have gotten the chance to years ago. I'll be 26 when I get my bachelor's.

ah that reminds me of another point... (for engineers, especially electrical/computer)

Unless your really lucky and have a stellar GPA your not going to land a relevant internship until after your junior year... so don't freak out if your back to working at the restaurant your sophomore summer... you really don't know enough until you finish or Jr year to be worth anything to anybody as an electrical engineer... Other departments this will vary DRASTICALLY...

Co-ops are a LOT easier to come by than summer interns b/c it's much more worth hiring somebody that you will get your money out of eventually... If your not really understanding what's going on in your classes I HIGHLY recommend co-op... It changed my life (corny but true...), if you know your going to get a masters, you understand everything and are doing well... I don't know if I would recommend co-op b/c it will slow you down...

Summer classes are typically easier than their full semester counterparts. They are more work, but typically they won't have the same number of papers/projects as the full version. I.e. ECE/MAE 435 (control theory) taken in the summer doesn't have the huge project that it does during regular sessions. I really liked summer classes b/c I didn't have time to forget the information before the test came around...

So:

freshmen summer go home and work 70hrs/week

sophomore summer, work a little, take summer classes(1 each session is pretty easy to do and work a lot)

Jr+ co-op/intern

Somebody mentioned Take summer classes at UNCW... Take classes at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington instead. I took Intro to ethics and Ancient world history and they both transferred, and they were RIDICULOUSLY easy, they TOTALLY spoon feed you there and since they were just an elective and the grade doesn't transfer anyways it mattered even less... And live ON Wrightsville beach otherwise you will never make it to the beach. It's totally possible to sublet for <$400/month from a UNCW student.

[Edited on September 15, 2007 at 3:01 PM. Reason : CFCC >>(easier) UNCW]

I graduated in ME and I can say that this is definitely not set in stone. Now, dont get me wrong, try as hard as you can to stay above 3.0 but in my experience, as long as you stay 3.0 or above its really internship and co-op EXPERIENCE that wins you a job, as well as a good interview, not a BS GPA.
