I claim to have renounced Catholicism since the early days of high school, but often I wonder if it really mattered enough to make such a big deal of it all. I've been confirmed, known many Catholic people (my father's family is a big German Catholic family in Richmond), and even have a cousin who is a monsignor in the Diocese of Raleigh...

But somehow I always felt traumatized by my upbringing. I think it's because I've always had acute anxiety issues, and was always horribly afraid of having to do things like go to confession and actually tell my priest all the bad things I had done, or being a member of a church that nobody else in my hometown went to and everybody seemed to regard with suspicion...or later in life, I worried about messing up readings or responsorial psalms or the like (it really was my first exposure to talking in front of crowds).

And now some days I feel ashamed or embarrassed by the fact that I no longer practice the faith, yet most of my cousins are ardent followers. I feel like an outsider, like somebody who's left the fold and can't ever return because he's burned too many bridges, not just with other people and the Church, but within his own heart and mind.

So, looking at the other side of the coin...I don't know if I could marry a Catholic woman...it almost terrifies me to think of returning to the Church and how I would be treated.

My mom was Baptist prior to marrying my dad. She joined the Church, though.

By the way, NO, I've never been molested by the clergy.

So for those of you whose parents were different religions or one was highly religious and the other wasn't, how did they go about trying to instill their beliefs upon you?

And if any of you are married to a person of different religion, what are your plans for your potential children?


I am not too religious of a person but I always seem to attract the Bible thumpers. I realize that living in the Bible belt (wtf is an Alabama?), more than likely I'll end up marrying one someday.

zxappeal- you shouldnt worry about how you would be treated if you decided to go back to the church. i think you'd be welcomed if anything. i know plenty of people that went away from the church when they were younger and came back years later (and some even left again). Actually the wife of a guy in my RCIA group is doing that now (since he is converting, she figured she could take it as chance to start over) and she had pretty much the same worries. even if you just went back for a little bit to see if you still had the same issues with being a catholic, it cant hurt to try.

easy- i dont vote purely on hot button issues. i vote for the person that has the most in common with my political opinions, especially on domestic issues. those people tend to be republicans. i am fairly confident that, even if the republicans had control of congress and their was a competent republican pres, that a ban on abortion would never make it through. so voting for republicans doesnt really affect my position on abortion
