Work on getting a fundamental grasp of the English language before you parrot some liberal blogs and try to sound smart to further separate yourself from your country ass parents
And apparently to you there is a HUGE differenc in calling someone "uneducated" and calling someone an "idiot"...I mean you (by crossing out that in your previous post) clearly don't want to name call by using crass and immature words like "idiot." btw this is another typical "bush"/"republican" tactic. When the goal is trying to take focus off the real issues or problems often something inconsequential is blown out of proportion to distract people.
for example....
Bush and friends want to take focus off the fuck up in Iraq and economic issues. so they concentrate on unimportant shit like

PS:
And I don't give a shit whether you believe this or not--it happens to be well-known to those who have knowledge of the subject. One has but to take Zinn's Philosophy of Adult Education Inventory, which I have taken and you have not, to see this confirmed. For example, if one scores in the "Radical" category, which many leftist academics likely would, the following is the description:
Quote : | "This philosophy views adult education as a primary force for achieving social change, or transforming society. A primary theme of RADICAL adult education philosophy is awareness and understanding of the influences of cultural, political, and economic factors on individuals within a society. RADICAL adult education may actually run against the current of American value patterns because it advocates political consciousness and social action, emphasizing knowledge as power and fostering a partnership between teachers and students. Other educational philosophies tend to accept the given societal values and attempt to advance these value structures through education. At its core, RADICAL adult education goes beyond the mainstream American belief in equality of opportunity to support equality of societal conditions and even compensatory measures to address prior injustice.
Examples of RADICAL adult education philosophy include opposition to compulsory education, free school models such as the Highlander Folk School, the de-schooling movement associated with Ivan Illich, the critical consciousness or liberation pedagogy of Paulo Freire, feminist theories (especially liberation models), worker education based on the socialist movement, and social justice education. Some of the more extreme environmental awareness efforts (e.g. Greenpeace, Earth First!) may also be representative of RADICAL education philosophy, though most environmental education would be more characteristic of PROGRESSIVE philosophy (i.e. 'We're all living on this planet together; let's make it a better place to live.')
In its extreme, RADICAL adult education philosophy may evidence a paradoxical twist. Although this philosophy strongly supports individual freedom and autonomy, some individuals or organizations may be strong advocates of a particular social action (e.g. extreme anti-abortion activists, radical environmentalists, or liberal feminists) as to become dogmatic in pressuring others to accept their point of view [!]--which would be more characteristic of BEHAVIORAL than RADICAL philosophy of adult education." |

HUR: Quote : | "I was just wondering how would explain the large imbalance in the number of liberal Conservative" |
Imbalance does NOT equal all or most. Imbalance can be as small as 51% and 49%. You are clueless and/or blind if you do not think that more ( >50%) of (insert a group from my list here) is red/conservative/bush-supporter. You would probably argue with me if a said....
I was wondering how to explain the large imbalance of hippies that -ride their bikes to work -drive a prius - smoke drugs - attend allman brothers shows
than people who consider themselves christians.

i dont think i ever said matthews was stuck up....
but matthews isn't a hick town. like HUR said, i'd describe Mint Hill that way. matthews is entirely surrounded by the city of charlotte. matthews is a town in name only. it's fully incorporated into the city of charlotte in everyway. its not a town in the conventional sense of the word by any means. it's just another part of the city of charlotte.
it certainly wouldnt be described like this:
Quote : | "matthews is a small town with a bunch of rednecks and some families" |
by anyone who isn't just blatantly trying to start an argument9/26/2007 5:01:39 PM |

Charlotte has its share of rednecks...less of them are around center city, more of them are around the outskirts...ie Pineville, Matthews, Mint Hill, Weddington, etc etc...is it some kind of dirt road town with tractors driving around? of course not...is it a redneck town? of course 9/26/2007 5:03:59 PM |

Boone:
Quote : | "Statered-- you're still asserting that the university system is some sort of monolithic liberalizing machine. This is laughable to anyone left of Limbaugh. I'm sorry if an education tends to liberalize people. Maybe you need to consider what liberalism and conservatism is all about, rather than construct make-believe liberal conspiracies.
And the federal job thing is worse. You need to show that the average professor has more than a 1 in 10,000 chance of landing a position in the executive office. If I were gunning for a federal position, "professor" wouldn't even be in my to ten career paths.
" |
That's right I am standing by my assertion. And you certainly haven't even tried of coming up with another explaination as to why Summers was uninvited. The way that instance was handled compared to the Ahmadinejad forum was the whole reason for my post. Did I try to tie both cases into my own personal theory? Yes. Again, the actions contradict each other, and I was trying to come up with a reason why. You don't sound like you disagree with my theory all that much. You agree with me that an education tends to liberalize people. If you think it's because all of a sudden people are more educated and see the liberal light so to speak, I won't try to convince you otherwise. I will say it doesn't do justice to the countless conservatives out there who are as educated or more so than their liberal counterparts, but whatever. I'm just saying, I'm inclined to believe it has something to do with who is teaching the class in the first place. Do I think this is a conspiracy? No. But while professors are there earning paychecks and conducting research, why not recruit some followers along the way?
My primary answer to your question and the one I posted first is this.
Quote : | "By allowing Ahmadinejad to speak where conservatives would not, they maintain the appearance (and in many cases rightly so) that they are more open-minded and more apt to have a meaningful and productive discourse than their conservative counterparts. And by taking a hard-line with Ahmadinejad, they don't discredit themselves or their cause (nurturing more liberals) by cozying up to a man everyone knows to be a fanatical despot. " |
Let's takeout "or their cause (nurturing more liberals)," since it seems to be something everyone has taken issue with and I don't feel like wasting my time trying to convince the unconvinceable. Is the rest of what I said there so far-fetched?
And you are right. There are countless other avenues through which you are more likely to gain federal employment. That's why I said establishing credibility was one of the more far-fetched reasons for joining academia. But what if a person in academia feels they have exhausted all avenues of research that interest them, and decide they want to serve their country in a policy-making position? Why not use an opportunity such as the Ahmadinejad forum to gain some 'street cred'?
Basically my belief as to why the two speakers were treated differently is: Columbia felt they could gain something from Ahmadinejad speaking, and U of C felt like they didn't stand to gain anything from Summers speaking. That's it. Pure and simple. The rest of my posts have been trying to explain what each stood to gain or not gain by having the respective speakers come and speak. I invite you to come up with your own reason as to why the two cases were treated differently. When you do, please share it with me. And please don't feed me the "there two different universities line." I've heard it, and it's thoroughly unconvincing. I'd be more inclined to believe Summers was sleeping with the wrong person's wife than that.
