i don't know about the Bookstore in particular, but Apple generally doesn't sell anything OEM-style. You can pretty much be sure everything you get from Apple, no matter where you get it, is packaged. 10/24/2007 4:48:55 PM |

hmm, Gruber says that there is no actual license checking (i.e. "calling home" or "activation") built into OS 10.0-10.4. http://daringfireball.net/2007/10/family maybe that means the 5-pack licenses are not really cut off at any time. I guess you buy them just to be a good citizen
Quote : | "The links for pre-ordering Leopard are doing well; as of last night, 579 orders have been placed by DF readers. One thing I find interesting is the breakdown between single-license copies and five-license “family packs”: 408 and 171, respectively.
What’s interesting about this is that the single-computer license isn’t enforced in code by the operating system. (Or at least that’s been the case with Mac OS X 10.0 through 10.4.)
.....
Every time I read stories about the annoyance of dealing with Microsoft’s Windows activation, I’m thankful that Apple doesn’t do anything like that with Mac OS X. One reason they don’t, of course, is that Mac OS X only runs on Apple computers, so it’s not like Apple is getting completely ripped-off by bootleggers or those who install the single-license version on multiple machines. But they could enforce these licenses with serial-checking code, and they could tie serial numbers to machine-specific hardware identifiers. And I’m thankful they don’t." |

^^ what Mac do you have? I think i've read that Leopard is the first version of OS X that will not run as quickly as its predecessor on identical hardware. But I think that's a moot point if your computer is fast enough to begin with. i.e. that will only affect you if you're installing it on a relatively old Mac 10/24/2007 5:29:16 PM |

^^^Leopard is supposed to be the fastest OS yet...afaik
^^^^^The last couple times they sold the Mac OS Discs they just came in a padded envelope. No frills. Pretty much all the rest of the Apple software they sell there comes in the retail boxes. Not that it really matters anyways, right?

So latest word from our Apple rep (who's a great guy and contacted us immediately when he heard this) is that the bookstore's shipment of OSX software could be delayed as late as November 1st. Hopefully it'll be sooner than that, but Apple's usually pretty accurate with their "as late as" statements. Anyways, pre-orderers will be emailed as soon as it's available.
So if the 3-4 day delay isn't too much for you, you can pre-order on the ncsu bookstores website and get it for about 50 bucks less than even the normal apple education discount. Also if you need to update your iLife or get the newest iWork package, those are each only 39.00 - 40 bucks cheaper than Apple.
Also, anyone interested in dual booting and not fully satisfied with bootcamp might want to check out the 39.00 version of VMWare Fusion.

Apple brand stuff comes in pretty Apple retail boxes, even at the NCSU Bookstore. It's just a hell of a lot cheaper there. They no longer do the padded envelope stuff- even Tiger came in boxes.

^^^ The question of speed comes into play for people like me. G4 800MHz Quicksilver model (Dual!!) from about 6 years ago. I'm still debating if I'm going to upgrade.
Anything Intel is no problem. Especially anything Intel and 2GHz.
I believe 10.2 was the last OS upgrade I got in a padded envelope, and it was strictly an upgrade version. (I took my proofs of purchase from 10.1 into Circuit City or Best Buy and asked if they had 10.2 upgrades. They said they needed a receipt from my 10.1 purchase, and I was like wtf no that was a year ago here's my proof o' purchase and they were like gtfo. So I went down to TenPlus or whatever down near the dollar theater and they were more than happy to give me a copy without even needing to see PoP. Seemed like really great guys there. Or maybe it was a 10.0 to 10.1 upgrade that was free because 10.0 kinda sucked...)
But now all versions are the full versions in the bigass boxes that are pretty much standalone versions that don't require any specific previous version to be installed first. Just an OS in a box.

random notes from macrumors:
Quote : | "With the delivery of Mac OS X Leopard, there have been a number of articles detailing individual observations. Here compilation of interesting Leopard tidbits:
Engadget - Officially, no backing up with Time Machine over the drives you have connected via USB to your Airport Extreme (but here's a potential workaround) - Time Machine can backup over the network but only to AFP sharesO - Syncing notes to iPhone doesn't work (yet?)
Gizmodo - no R2D2 hologram effect in iChat (image) - When you unplug your Time Machine external, nothing happens, but the instant you plug it back in, Time Machine does a backup -- in the background. You never see anything, but it silently backs stuff up every time that drive is connected. - Feels fast on a PowerBook G4 1.33GHz
David Pogue - New iChat preference: the preference setting called "Watch for my name in incoming messages." It alerts you any time anyone, in any of the open chats, types your name, even if you're doing something else on the Mac.
MacWorld - Resizable partitions: Create and resize hard disk partitions on the fly in Leopard.
MacOSXHints - When you're viewing all of your Spaces (F8), you can press the C key to collect all the windows from all spaces into the first space. Press C again to send them back where they started." |

Question: Besides being illegal. If I put the same single license DVD in both my iMac and my macbook pro..will it work without deactivating the first install?
The reason I ask is because I have my free upgrade coming in the mail since I bought the iMac after Oct. 1st but I didn't want to wait for it to get here to upgrade my macbook pro. So legally I have two licenses I just don't have the 2nd in my hand yet 10/27/2007 11:44:05 AM |

I am having networking issues with some SMB shares that I had set up now that I have loaded Leopard. I had my MyBook ext. drive set up as a media drive with an SMB share (set up via Sharepoints) that was used with XBMC. Now, XBMC doesn't see the drive anymore and I can't see that the share still exists. I relaunched Sharepoints to reset the shares, but it crashes as soon as you try to make any changes.
Anybody else having issues like this?

No. It was confirmed in a link earlier in this page that there is no "activation" process. OS X does not "phone home" when you install. You could theoretically copy the DVD and distribute it to everyone on this board and it would be fine.10/27/2007 12:22:28 PM |

Those using "Application Enhancer" framework from Unsanity LLC may wish to backup and perform a clean install. It's suspected of causing problems detailed below:

Also:
Quote : | "Archive and Install
This type of installation moves existing System files to a folder name Previous System, then installs a new copy of Mac OS X. You cannot start up your computer using the Previous System folder.
Archive and Install installations require the greatest amount of available disk space because you need to have room for your existing System and the new one you are installing. This is a good choice if you've already backed up your important files and are trying to resolve an existing issue.
Important: This option leaves non-Apple-installed (third-party) items intact, though they may be moved, depending on their location. Usually it's best to reinstall third-party software after an Archive and Install installation to ensure they work correctly.
The Preserve Users and Network Settings option (selected by default) imports existing user accounts, their Home folders, and your network settings into the new system after installation. If you deselect this, you should have a current back up your important data, network settings, and user Home folders available. The Mac OS X Setup Assistant will not appear after this kind of installation.
You might wonder, "What do I do with the Previous System folder?" It may contain items that you need. To determine this, once you've finished configuring, installing, and updating your applications, compare the Previous System to the new System. If there are things in the Previous System folder that aren't in the new System folder, just copy them over. If you're not sure what some items are (and don't seem to need them), leave them in the Previous System folder. Once you're comfortable that you've got everything you need out of it, you can delete the Previous System folder (or leave it around if you're not low on disk space). " |
It seems that it gets your documents and most of the Application data.

agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
if you want painless, a clean install is most definitely not the way to go. Mac OS X upgrades are good, and for sure the easiest way to go. Upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5 will work well - it works a lot better than Windows upgrades.
but if you want to do a clean install, jut for a fresh beginning or whatever, i would suggest backing up to an external HDD (you have to do that anyway, if you want to retain your data during the re-format), then run Migration Assistant. It will pull all your User settings and files (including Mail) off of the old drive and install it automagically.
then, of course, you would use the external drive as your Time Machine backup 10/27/2007 9:27:46 PM |

One advantage to the clean install is that it is like an automatic optimization of the file system, where all the system files are sequential on the HD, potentially speeding up application launch times and boot times, etc.. 10/27/2007 9:30:02 PM |
