The problem is that they radiate the instant-on just as they crest hilltops, just blindly hoping that a speeder will be there. That's how this guy got me today.

That and there are a metric shit-ton of them with absolutely nothing to do here on the island.

and learn to drive? haha. logical fallacy--does not compute.

How the fuck do you manage to get pulled over so often, duke?

I've never been pulled over.

You're a real American. I'm a crazy anarchist transhumanist.

Cops sure know how to pick them, huh?

You aren't really an anarchist. You just don't believe in our current systems of government. I'm an anarchist, I don't want any government.

yeah, except that most people here drive pretty slowly because of the Traffic Gestapo (I've really never seen anything like this place in terms of traffic ticketing. it's insane even by small town standards).

then they give them tickets for that, too!

[Edited on March 26, 2008 at 6:26 PM. Reason : i don't care too much how slow people are unless they're in the passing lane. i'll get around them.]

the speed limits here are REALLY low, though, so it would be pretty tough to be going less than the speed limit.

I just set my cruise control if it's over 25 and fuck it. Even if I'm running late, getting a ticket will make me so much later.

i don't have cruise control on my Evo, though

and i haven't really gotten in the habit of using it in the truck.

besides, that only works if you're trying not to speed. I have no interest in not speeding--I'm more of a fan of speeding without getting ticketed for it, and that means constantly adjusting my speed based on conditions.

(my gas mileage sucks big time--I'll slow down to 10 over, then speed up, then back down, then back up, and so on)

Guess I should update this. I think the final count for the 13 months I lived in WA was 13 times pulled over, with 3 tickets. One was reduced to a seatbelt violation (although I was wearing my seatbelt), one apparently got thrown out--I never heard anything more about the on-base ticket for tailgating after I offered to take it to federal district court, and the other was reduced on-site to 9-over by the cop, which I just paid.

So...I made it all the way across the country without getting pulled over. In the 2 months or so that I was in NC, I got pulled over once on the way to work (no ticket)...I got pulled over in Montgomery, AL for 86 in 70, if I remember correctly, while I was returning to NC from predeployment leave with my daughter. Tried to lawyer up, but the lawyers all said that the judge in that district is this total bitch who won't reduce anything. Never heard of that before, but whatever. Fuck her. Finally, in a fitting send-off, I got pulled over in Morehead City again on the way to base on the morning that I left for Iraq. Again, no ticket.

Oh, and I didn't get pulled for the last several months in WA, once I sold the Evo and bought the truck (though I got RADAR'd for speeding several times). What you are driving absolutely makes a big difference. For that matter, the ticket in AL was in a rental car, and getting pulled over on my last day in the States was in my mom's car...so I was only pulled over once with the truck in, ohh, 5 months+.

That's it right there. Not that I have ever had what you would call high performance cars, but I've broken the law a lot worse in a shitty car and basically been ignored. Example: I've gotten off with a warning going 15 over in a 1988 nissan stanza, and on another occasion I got a gun pulled on me and a ticket for taking a soft turn too quickly in a 328i, where I didn't even exceed the speed limit.

I would've made it my mission to ensure that cop never again worked in law enforcement if he pulled a gun on me for taking a corner a little fast.

I have to wonder if there's more to the story that you've mentioned, though.

I would agree with this and be generally OK with the concept of speeding tickets, except for the part where my privately-owned car insurance that the government requires me to have also gets to tax me.

Was a state trooped in town. I had a green arrow to take the right turn coming up, and it was one of those soft turns so I went through in 2nd going around 40mph. He hit the lights and I pulled over. He stopped his car within a few inches of my door so I wouldn't be able to open my door and when I looked back I saw his gun drawn. He put it away as soon as he noticed I was just calming sitting there.
Thought I was on some kind of getaway run or something. Ended up with what I think is the same as a careless and reckless.. "Failure to operate with due caution...etc."

Yeah, see that's not what I had in mind when you said "had a gun pulled on you", though I suppose it's technically correct.

I had an MP click his safety off on me one time because I had to rummage through a pile of stuff on my passenger seat to get my ID out of my jacket pocket. That didn't bother me--he was quite polite and professional, and most people probably wouldn't have even noticed what he did--but he was being ready.

^^ don't even get me started on insurance rate hikes. Total bullshit. Their claim is that if you speed, you're more likely to cost them money with accident claims. Why not eliminate the fucking guesswork, then, and let accident claims be the sole factor on insurance rate hikes?

so I got a ticket on base yesterday...clocked me at 38 in a 25 on my bike; wrote it up for 35 in a 25. No points on my driving record, no points on my insurance, and no monetary fine. If I get like 2-3 more base tickets within 12 months, I'll be barred from driving on base, but that won't happen (especially since I'll be deployed again in probably 9 months, and I'll spend 6 weeks in AZ this fall).

Also got pulled over on the bike for 15 over on Highway 70 about a week ago (in New Bern). Verbal warning.

they just came out with a integral, discretely mounted RADAR detector for motorcycles. I'm gonna have to order one (my Valentine One would look stupid mounted to the handlebars, and it would susceptible to crash damage, theft, and rain. Also, I wouldn't be able to toss it out of sight when I get pulled over like I can in a car.)

I've never been stopped, ticketed or asked for my license, BUT the worst ticket I've heard of someone getting was my uncle's "low riding trunk" ticket in Hot Springs, NC (I believe). Talk about lame - he was driving an older, white Crown Vic. too. There was some kind of 'bike week' event going on and there were cops pulling people over every 100 yards - Insane!

^^ that is true. for that exact reason, I don't have a sports car right now. i still have a hell of a time not speeding on the motorcycle, though.

for what it's worth, i don't speed with my daughter in the car. i don't want to get in a wreck with her, and even though she's only 2 (well, closer to 3, now), I don't want to set a "bad" example for her. (I say "bad" because I still contend that in the right car, in the right circumstances, with the right driver, speeding--even significantly--is OK. That said, I want to teach her to be a conservative driver until I can teach her enough skill and judgement to do otherwise).

Plus I'm MUCH more risk averse with her than I am with myself.

I guess I gotta get in the military and get white. I've been pulled 13 times and only gotten out of tickets twice on the pull. Every time I have to get out of them in court. some guy gave me a ticket for 77 in a 50 when I wasn't doing less than 100 the other day. I was on my bike and there was like 10 full minutes and 3 miles between where he said he saw me doing it and where he pulled me. hopefully crouch cleaned it up though

because statistically speaking, you are much higher risk.

I figured all you guys would have grown out of this by now. Speeding is stupid, plain and simple. There is absolutely no sensical reason for it. You aren't going to get where you are going any noticeable amount faster, you are wasting money on fuel, insurance and tickets. You are statistically more likely to get in an accident because of the DIFFERENTIAL of speed between yourself and others on the road.

I haven't had a speeding ticket in 7 years. As a result, I get HUGE discounts on my insurance. Prior to my claim this spring (damn lotus does not like touching concrete) I got a 24% discount for having a clean record. Even after the claim (which was HUGE), my insurance only went up 160 bucks a year, because of my longterm good standing.

For all the money you are paying in tickets and insurance, you could probably go to 5 or 6 full track days a year instead.

a good buddy of mine got a funny ticket a year or two ago

pulled up to the light on western to turn right onto avent ferry, and a cop rolled up next to him in the thru-lane. my friend being who he is, decided to roll all his volvo's windows down and blast NWA's "Fuck tha Police"

cop lit up and gave him a citation for noise and disorderly conduct or some shit.

You're missing my point, though. They are concerned about you getting into a wreck and costing them money. You know what has a MUCH stronger correlation with that than speeding does? GETTING INTO WRECKS AND COSTING THEM MONEY. Brain-shattering logic right there, huh?

I just can't wrap my mind around insurance companies offering "accident forgiveness" and still giving a rat's ass about speeding. It would be smarter, it seems to me, to not care much (or at all) about speeding, but to hammer the hell out of customers who actually get into wrecks.

Quote :

More often than not, I don't speed to get anywhere faster. I speed because I hate driving and stupid-slow speeds. In other words, I drive at what amounts to a comfortable speed with respect to all the factors and conditions, and don't pay a whole lot of attention to what the posted limit is. In my truck, in the rain or at night, the posted limit might be pretty reasonable. In a sports car, on a clear, dry day, with little or no other traffic around, it's a pretty safe bet that the posted limit is not even close to reasonable. (***I still don't go more than 5-9 over with my daughter in the car...but otherwise, I drive at a reasonable speed.) The only time I really speed egregiously though is on curvy, empty backroads in a sports car (or on a sportbike), and even then, I don't do any stupid silly speeds like I used to when I was younger.

The speed differential thing is not a factor--I don't go flying by people or running up on them quickly. If there's traffic around, that dictates your speed somewhat, if you have any decent judgement.

As far as cost of extra fuel, insurance, and tickets, it isn't that much, and it's more than worth it to me.

Yeah I went over that limit when I was there. Got two tickets in one night. I was working nightshift, went home for dinner around midnight in my coveralls and safety boots. dude pulled me over because he thought i had been drinking, gave me a ticket for 5-6 over. same dickhead pulled me over about an hour later when i was coming back on base, same reasoning, gave me a ticket for 1 over (bs). luckily he was a friggin idiot and copied all the info off the first ticket (including the date and time) and put it on the second ticket. i was able to get one thrown out.
