Update...

Quote :
"Just one week after failing to override President Bush's veto, House Democrats will put a new version of their $35 billion expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program to a vote today, hoping that minor changes will win enough Republicans to beat Bush this round.

The new version will underscore that illegal immigrants will not have access to the expanded program. It will ease adults off the program in one year, rather than the two in the vetoed version. And it establishes a firmer eligibility cap at 300 percent of the federal poverty line, just more than $60,000 for a family of four.

....

Perhaps most important, it stipulates that applicants must have their Social Security numbers checked by the Social Security Administration. If Social Security cannot confirm citizenship, applicants will be required to provide states with documentation proving eligibility."

i hope this bill gets shot down. if you can't afford healthcare for your children maybe you should look for a new job or re-evaluate if you should have children. The last time i checked the constitution did not give Americans the right to have a litter of 9 children who will be paid and supported by the tax payer.

Didn't GWB do just this sort of thing right before recess (this, last?) year in regards to the wiretapping stuff?

If I remember correctly, the resident troll used the "they should stay in session instead of going on vacation" excuse.

pretty much the life story of bi-partisan politics in the US the last 40 years

Well, I guess this latest attempt by the Democrats disproves the theory of some here and elsewhere that the SCHIP move was simply "shrewd" politics. It appears that they are serious about it--so which is it?

And how can the Dems "beat" Bush on SCHIP, as the article at the top of this page suggested? He actually supports reauthorization of the program. Perhaps it's the [sarcasm]objective[/sarcasm] media at work yet again.

Quote :
"Now it's time to put politics aside and seek common ground to reauthorize this important program. I have asked Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, National Economic Council Director Al Hubbard, and OMB Director Jim Nussle to lead my administration's discussions with the Congress.

I made clear that, if putting poor children first requires more than the 20 percent increase in funding I proposed, we'll work with Congress to find the money we need. I'm confident we can work out our differences and reauthorize SCHIP."

they should regardless of party. The thing the reps did with the wiretapping bill was they changed the bill and the dems voted on it without reading it.

As Expected, Bush Vetoes SCHIP Bill Again

Quote :
"(The Politico) For the second time, President Bush has vetoed a major expansion of the children's health insurance program, making it clear that the debate will linger as a political issue throughout 2008.

Democrats had rewritten the $35 billion SCHIP legislation in an effort to create more firm caps on income eligibility while explicitly banning children of illegal immigrants from qualifying for the program, funding the expansion with an increase in tobacco taxes. But in an October vote, Democrats gained no ground with House Republicans, who held enough of their members together to sustain any veto.

Bush issued his veto on Wednesday, saying 'our nation's goal should be to move children who have no health insurance to private coverage - not to move children who already have private health insurance to government coverage' [emphasis added].

Democrats dispute that expanding SCHIP to 10 million children would encourage families who have private insurance to dump their health plans in favor of the government program.

With a little over a week left in the congressional session, it's not clear if Congress will even bother to schedule a veto override vote that is guaranteed to fail [emphasis added]."

lets scapegoat smokers again

I have not agreed much with Count W and Darth Cheney but I agree with Bush 100% on this. Talking about politics with my dad last night nearly turned into a screaming match b.c our stark opinion on universal health care of which this is the first step (testing the waters for future legislation).

this is the first step towards universal health care?

are you some kind of fucking sage? how do you know this?

oh right, it's just extreme hyperbole masquerading as an "argument" against the bill because you've got nothing else

oh yeah, except this ridiculous hyperbole:

No different from scapegoating fat people, a tactic which is used in basically any TWW health care debate.

don't worry - your taxes aren't going towards this. China is paying for it, and at best, your grandkids will pay for it. That, or our debt will just be defaulted.

uh, is that in case someone missed the same post you just made 6 posts previously?

as a fellow troller, i've gotta say: you're really losing your touch, man.

it's kind of sad, really. it's like when an old baseball player who should be retired, comes back for that "one last season" and just staggers along with a .193 batting average in the DH position.
